LOL. The only ones on Starsider who hate me are Jedi and their alts (which probably does equal 90% of the server since everyone's either a Jedi or a groupie). Why do they hate me? Because I'm the single biggest threat to them. I own Jedi left and right. I know it. They know it.

If you think about it, why do melee weapons like swords/etc even exist in this obviously futuristic era of Star Wars? IRL, swords are antiquated and obviously not used anymore (excluding ceremonial purposes such as the USMC's mameluke swords, and practitioners of Kendo and such.) and while they're obviously lethal to a person, regular melee weapons (not talking lightsabers here) cannot deflect bullets. The person with the gun usually wins in all cases, unless you get the drop on them, which is still risky. Small, concealed blades might be useful for an unexpected assassination, realistically speaking, but that doesn't apply in SWG.
Nor do the movies or any other canon plot crap Lucas puts out show us anything about melee weapons and why they would be better than guns, much less lightsabers. Vibroblades are a neat concept (a mechanized, chainsaw-like blade that has some plausibility as far as how it could cut through armor) but by no means should a person with a vibroblade live for longer than five seconds when faced with an enemy carrying an E-11 carbine so long as there's any amount of distance between them. It's simply realism.
To the problem: As is a big problem with most MMO's that involve guns, who are too shy to implement anything First Person Shooter-style, they toned down the lethality of guns. No, one bullet (or laser as the case may be) to the head will not kill you. Yes, you are a ultra-badass who can withstand a full-auto burst without much more than a dent in your armor, charge into pointblank range (which doesn't give a ranged profession a huge accuracy bonus, by the way), and cut that stupid fool down. Stupid fool, because that guy actually thought he could squeeze the trigger quicker than you could approach and swing that sword.
The only plausible melee weapon against guns is a lightsaber, with Jedi reflexes and the ability to saber block. Anything else is ridiculous, and hence why it's never been in the movies in anything other than a ceremonial role, if that.
It comes down to the fact that SOE (and most MMO designers) have decided that PvP and combat in general shouldn't be over with so fast, it shouldn't be "blam blam you're dead". They've dropped any semblance of realism. As technology for weaponry increases (from bullets to lasers) obviously so does armor, to withstand the weapons your enemies have. Obviously armor that can resist laserburns would exist in Star Wars to some extent, to the same extent thattoday's kevlar *may* prevent handgun fire, but it won't stop a 7.62mm or .30-06. So I'm not saying melee-professions wouldn't have the possibility of charging up to a Rifleman if they have good armor, but range is also a factor, and as I said... ranged professions don't get accuracy bonuses when people get into pointblank range, though they DO get accuracy penalties for going beyond 65m (tested with a friend who had both ranged cybernetic arms, up to 80m range. His damage had a significant decrease.)
Frankly, PvP and combat in general has become so slow that it's starting to get stupid. Everybody dabbles in Medic/Doc now, it all comes down to who can stay in the fight the longest. There are times when I've fought Jedi and Doc/Swordsmen and the fight seems like it just won't end, just whackin' away at each other without any realistic repercussions. You got 10 wounds? That's just a numerical annoyance, they don't do anything, shrug off that huge laceration on your thigh, you can still Force Run away at top speed without any consequences.
So the question is, how much realism do you want in a game, and given that the Combat Upgrade has come and gone, would SOE change a thing even if all of us whined about it if some perfect solution were found? Sad fact of life... I doubt it.
