Enhancer x4xx will get hit harder and more often than an MDef and lose a lot of Force.
Enhancer x4xx / Def 0000 will get hit about as hard but more often as a MDef and lose a lot of Force.
Enhancer x4xx / Def 0040 will get hit about as hard and a little more often than a MDef and lose some Force.
If you dont have the skill points for MDef, Def 0040 / Enh x4x2 is a pretty good and viable economy-class defense.
I myself have Def 0040 / Enh x4x2 and can tank CL 80 picket lairs, but I will need to use Force Channel to get back the Force I lost from the hits on my Armor. I wouldnt recommend Force Armor without Force Aura or you will be hit pretty often and for more damage, which will lead to a huge Force drain.
Comparison:
MDef:
700 ranged / melee / Force defense
70 Jedi Innate Armor
no Force cost for hits taken
Def 0040 / Enh x4xx:
500 ranged / melee / Force defense
70 Jedi Innate Armor
8% of the damage mitigated taken from the Force pool.
Thats obviously even better than Def 0040 / Enh x4x2, but I dont have enough skill points for it. There is a reason the current FOTM is MLS / Enh 3402 / Def 4040 / Heal 4000
If you master defender and are looking for ways to improve the defensive side of Jedi and not get FA2, try force sap from Healer xx4x. With no mind or action pool regen,a single opponentcannot spam heavy specials at you which acts as a defensive ability. Similarly, Powers xx4x has a cool AOE intimidate which lowers attack damage by 20%. The hard part of intimidate is getting it to stick.
Also Healer xxx4 is something to keep in mind of when states are fixed and they actually work.

that's funny ... I thought the FOTM involved cloak.
FOTM is BS ... it is a term arbitrarily decided to fulfill each separate thread.

Nope, cloak never was FOTM for full templates if you look at the last astromech stats - almost no Powers dabblers, which means almost no cloaking Jedi.
MDef / MLS was FOTM for some time, but people realized that they only had skill points for either Healer 4040, Enh 2000 / Heal 3000 or Enh 0002 / Heal 3000 (or variations on the tier 2 and 3 boxes), leaving them vulnerable to at least one of the following: kiting, heavy damage, CMs, Force drain (either the attack or people beating them by running them out of Force).
Thats why - after the improvements to it - Force Armor is now taken more and more - and most people that dont want cloak now go for MLS / Enh 3402 / Heal 4000 / Def 4040 or slight variations thereof.
here's my templete
MLS, Enh 24x2, defender xx4x, Healer 2xxx, Powers x4xx
Improved FA, along with novice def, gives you the same innate armor as a MDEF. However with proper melee foods usage, your melee DEF will be slightly less than a MDEF.. however I wear clothes with melee/ranged defense mods, so I actually come just about 20 points shy of being dead even completely with a MDef. (after foods)
Regardless, The true key to FA, is becoming a master of channel. Channel often, but not too often. Properly done, you will outlast MDEF's untill they are out of force, even after AI. But you have to have the offensive capabilities to do so. (I don't reccomend anything besides MLS with FA unless you are doing some kind of pure support templete with Menh) Anyone besides MLS/MDEF (who moreso go for dead on fight to the death) are survivalists, who will take time to manage their pools as well, giving you their time as well to conserve yours.
Also to help the force management, carry lots of stims and ruby. As said I only have 1000 power heals, they work, but I try not use a stim every 3 force heals, also saves on the mind cost to help me keep being able to channel.
And you can tank with FA as well, you just have to be a bit pickier about it than a MDEF. 82 Bol lairs I can tank easy, picket lairs become a challenge, as I just spin a few times till I get below 40% health, force heal, then stim the rest of my way back to full, start spinning again, with a channel when my force hits different markers
It is truley a "hard mode", however with the proper force, food, and mind management, you are more than a MDEF, you are truley one with the force, as it is entirely your life moreso than any other templete. The fact that I am a mdef, but without AI leaves me Sp open to pursue other interests, so MLS, along with anything else I need. However FA is not for those who cannot pay accute attention to management and precise timing.
With practice, you are nearly unstoppable, and as I said I also have cloak if things get hairy.

Improved Force Armor on its own...now that's a different story.

Not true... Cap is 60%, MD is 52%...
BTW FA is like 48%, but the defenses, Aura, and Valor from Defender are enough to make this a bigger gap.
Now having Master Defender and FA2 is worthless waste of points. Cause cap happens at MD and FA1.
Also note MD with FA1 is not a 'great' option, as the FA1 gets the first round of hit in the equation, so you eat force very fast on higher level content. Where it would be smarter to just have only MD and heal a bit more.

exactly what changes between FA1 and 2 besides the damage taken. Duration? Effectiveness (force drain/damage?)
If it caps at FA1 with minimal difference to 2, then M def x2xx enh would be wise for the strictly defensive Jedi, correct?
Ciao,
See my post above - having FA1 with MD can help, but force cost from FA1 taking first hit is a large chuck of force on high level content.
You would be better to heal more and leave FA1 alone for most things.

its actually between 60.91 to 61.15 on the tests ive done for the cap with MD and FA1 depending on what i let hit me, FA2 is the exact same results
so there are hidden decimal points on damage but the average is about 61%
i did this test because i am fed up at the moment as theres nothing much to do![]()
so jedi armour caps at 90, it might cap 1 or 2 points below 90 but it dont get any higher above 90![]()
