I promise you that this is the case, at least for now. I am a Defender 4440, Master Rifleman, CM4000 and I wear no armor. I actually get hurt more WITH my saber equipped. Long live the hybrids, I say. I am not uber, but it sure surprises the heck out of people.
that will be your "rifle defence" mods kicking in - you lose them when you equip a saber

Sorry for the slow reply...I actually used my token. I got tired of being a weenie, and I got tired of the respec pop-up. On the other hand, if you can find groups that don't mind, I cannot see why one wouldn't be able to level up with a training saber. Just run around playing whack-a-gurk while the rest of the group does the work. I have a fourth gen saber, made before I respecced, and its not like it makes a significant difference in a group grinding situation.
And to the other poster: Yes, I my understanding is that the difference with the Saber defense is related to my melee defense being lower...even though we had always thought that it was the the other way around.
