Thread: Holo grind should come back
I know many many people believed the holo grind was bad. It maid our crafters fighters and our fighters crafters and for several months it hurt our economies some.
HOWEVER
If it were not for the holo grind I would most likely not be playing this game today. You see I got to play other things other than the best template to grind xp and get my Jedi. I got to play 28 other masteries and found ones I enjoyed very much. I did unlock my Jedi on 28 and become what is known to day as pre publish 9 Jedi. But after it was all said and done its nice to play something other than Jedi.
I try to help new players who join the game and see so many of them become FS than paddy only to see them get bored with Jedi and quit. on kauri it seams to always be the same Jedi pvping from what I can see with 90% being pre publish 9 Jedi.
I have talked to others and it seams to me and them that they all found professions in which they could play and have fun other than Jedi during the crazy holo grind. I would of never grinded out riflemen without the holo grind but I love playing it and have had it since before publish 9. I hate crafting but my alt is a master tailor and I enjoy crafting cloths.
Now I do not think holo grind should be the ways again but maybe use a form of the holo grind to get to the village like 4 holos and one of your choosing. Gold holos should be able to be questable. Finnish the quest and the theme parks/poi and the old man will come.
1 this will slow down jedi
2 we will not have complete noobs as jedi
3 soe may keep more customers longer

the only problem with hologrinding is...
Possible to master any combat profession in a day with current grind groups. The way to gain xp is was too easy now. On this character i have now. I master Bounty hunter (except the invest) in a couple hr gaming session. Pre-cu it would take multiiple days (possiible weeks if you went pikeman)
to master a combat profession. In this system you could master many professions a week.
It takes about 6months to become a jedi?? with hologrind @ 2 proffession a week. it would take 4months. Post cu the hologrind would speed up the jedi "problem". I managed to master BH and combat medic in aprox 4 days. couple hrs for the combat trees of Bounty hunter. and 3 days of aprox 2hr gaming sessions for combat medic.
I've mastered everything but Politician and the 9 pilot professions in-game. I started hologrind and mastered 11 combat professions, then switched to the village in September 04. Had I been able to complete the hologrind, I would have unlocked Jedi in October. Since I was stuck with the village for 4 phases, I didn't unlock until January. The village actually slowed me down over the hologrind.
However, having mastered every non-combat profession Post-CU, there are some definite hurdles to grinding out all the professions I have. Yes, you can get a combat profession in a day, except for BH. Investigation tree will take you a day or two by itself.
Bio-Engineer sampling took forever - almost 3 to 4 days for me.
Sampling in Artisan takes a few days.
Merchant is time-gated. A week at least.
Dancer and Muscian chew up several days as well.
Shipwright is ludicrously expensive. I think I spent 7-8,000,000 on resources alone. Same goes for Architect with a somewhat smaller price tag.
Weaponsmith is hard because the gas is expensive as well.
The holo grind was bad on many different levels, but I loved it.
Back then you were forced to at least master various professions of the game and you became familiar w/ professions sometimes liking them and keeping them.
Now, I have CL 1 players ask me what's the fastest way to grind and become a Jedi? And w/ good reason too, who doesn't want an extra slot to begin with....
Either way bringing back the hologrind now isn't an option, its too late and not really worth the time.

i did not say the holo grind should replace the villige just added in some how
I was primarily a crafter during the hologrind days and my chief complaint was what it did to the economy. Please were buying up materials like crazy so they could get through the crafting professions fast. That drove up the price of raw materials. Next, the hologrinders flooded the market with inferior product and below-market prices.
A good crafter could overcome the above, but it sure made things a pain! I'm not sure I want to go back to that.
I didn't finish all my hidden holos before Publish 9 hit, so I had the distinct pleasure of killing gazillions of pikets under the new system. Not sure I was crazy about that, either.
Both systems required a lot of time and effort. The old system took a bigger drain on credits and in some cases could be afk macroed. The new system is more monotonous and in some cases can be afk macroed.
The OP put forth these 3 points:
"1 this will slow down jedi"
"2 we will not have complete noobs as jedi"
"3 soe may keep more customers longer"
The hologrind doesn't solve any of the above. You can grind through a profession and end up not knowing a thing about how to play that profession well! "Slowing down" a population of players only delays the inevitable... it might only discourage a small percentage. You won't stop the dedicated folks who really want it. And as for keeping customers... SOE has the power to do that by fixing the bugs, adding content, and being more careful before nerfing.
for one its completely unbalanced, one person can unlock in 4 professions, others do almost every profession in the game and dont get it (myself included in the last one)
as well it will destroy the economy again, majority of the people wont be crafting quality items, it will just be the majority of the population grinding everything as fast as they can instead of making quality items to sell.
only thing left is to cut xp. not like it was that one time, but instead of elites getting 6500 per kil, cut it to about 3500 per kill. thougths on this?
plus a new system thats random, like the holo grind, but not the holo grind. something that would make to where you cant post a walk thru. that alone will definitely slow people. if you dont really know specifically, then youre less likely to actively persue it. or again xp. or cut xp as i said and increase the amount at the village or make the village longer. thats about the only way to really slow jedi. if its that far fetched, then most people will quit and actually start playing the game
