Thread: FRS Slightly unfair?

Before I rant on I'd like to say, I'm one of those unfortunate SWG players, and a Force Wielder, that plays on 56k.

People say, go PvP when you finish your temp. I'm one of those guys who still hunt in groups because I lag out in theed. I can honestly admit I have lost to BHs fair and square but a lot of my deaths were from a PL of 50% or more.

Anyways, with the old FRS the dial-uppers were fooked. (Unless you somehow got the lag down or cooped with it) I mean it's truely (unless after a server crash) impossible to PvP in a big city such as Theed, CNet, Mos Eisley, etc with 56k. You might get lucky and get free of lag but it's rather unlikely. I mean recently I've looked into Wi-Fi which is faster than normal Cable with a good upload speed aswell, doesn'tfear weather either.

I just hope that the new FRS has something more friendly for those who can't PvP. Don't get me wrong, at work (2.5 meg Cable ftw) I PvP my brains out, I love it but at home I just can't get a heal in without getting hit 2/3 more times before it registers...

/endrant

Anyone else out here PvPing on dial-up?

Let us not forget RAM in this conversation either. I was playing at home on a DSL connection but with 512MB of RAM and on a Saturday Night it would take me 5-10 minutes and one crash to load into MO usually.

I recently got the laptop I play on at home upgraded to 1.5GB of RAM (convinced the work people I needed it) and now I load into MO and anywhere else in about 5 seconds flat.... and can run thru big cities without lag of any kind. I never was a fan of PvP before (especially when on TS and hearing my group members land, fight, die, clone and leave.... all before I loaded in). Now that I have the new RAM I am PvPing more than I do anything else.

Good times.....

I feel your pain, i bh on 56k. Nothing like hitting a heal and it registers after the other 2/3's of your health bar disappear because every kid in the neighborhood feel like choosing that exact moment to download naughty pics off the internet. Although, theed isnt that bad, if i wait about 8 minutes to get everything fully loaded in, i can pvp alright. It's the random 9000 ping no bandwidth moments that really get me.

it's a sad an unfortunate reality, your limited by your equipment. My only suggestion would be to look into getting more ram and a high speed connection.

Well, What's this really got to do with the FRS? Because from what I've seen it's really got to do with the lack of effort the developers have put into streamlining the code to get rid of lag. Everyone seems to say that the CU killed huge PVP battles because everything became too laggy. That's got nothing to do with the FRS. It's got to do more with messy coding that desperately needs to be cleaned up. (and here they go adding more messy coding, IE New Expansion soon. heh.)

That said, You can't really expect to be able to PVP on dial-up. Back when UO was just a year old it was extremely difficult to do. Now, it's Near impossible to do it effectively unless the game is running nearly perfect and the developers have spent a LOT of time on streamlining the code to run faster and be more efficient. (Which they obviously haven't done in a long time.)

Box be damned,56K is only feasible for about25% of the content available in this game, and PVP, and large group outtings are just notamong those things.

ROFL @ Vikissi, too bad you're not on Starsider.

Anyways, Jacella, I would definately get Highspeed.... if it came out here. I don't even get DSL for cripes sake. I live in the middle of friggin nowhere... but in a Wifi Hotspot? /eyebrow....

Grunzer, I made this point because they only way you can advance in the FRS (if its anything like the old one) is PvP...

I feel your pain, i have been pvping off and on since the game launched on dial up. I have to say if anything it has gotten worse. I usually go to a friends house on the weekends to pvp.

Anywayback on topic, i hope the new FRS has more depth to it then killing regardless of my connection. /shrug

This is very true I have 2 computers at my house one with 2 gigs of ram and one with 1. I have 2 512MB sticks on the 1 gig one well recently one burned up so it only has 512 ram and it lags even when I try to put the inventory window up, as with the 2 gigs one I never lag. I dont know why they put this game needs 512 Ram cause in reality the only way you can play this right is with 1 gig.

The problem is that you can't complain about an FRS that is not even aproved and that we have no idea how it will be.

And they have said that it will not be anything like the old FRS...

but in any case it foes suck to play on 56K

no sig won't let me use html sniff sniff

kinda hard to play mmo on dial up...does your area not have dsl or cable?.....i play high speed and i lag a bit when there are big battles...but rarely...but i have to agree..this game uses a mass amount of ram.....i've heard of mmo's that from the way they're structured you use minimal amounts of ram..but i'm not a techy..don't know much about that side of the programming infrustructure...but i feel ya..when i was 16 i used to play quake online on a 28k modem..and it was like 1 frame per second..and all the t1 line guys would blow me away..we were just excited that we were playing with 30 different other players around the world...

i used to have the same lag problem u guys are having. Even tho i was on a cuztom comp that was INSANELY fast on the internet, the RAM that swg ate was making my ventrilo crash. Went from 512 to 1.5 gigs and i load into MO in 3 secs. I didnt even know what pvp was before i got that RAM.
