Thread: You aren't supposed to play your Jedi 100% of the time

I'm reposting this from another thread, becuase I wanted a few more people to see it, and maybe understand why old Jedi have such an attitude sometimes, and noob Jedi just don't seemhave a clue about the old system, or what they missed out on.

This was in response to post that someone had said, "you aren't supposed to play your Jedi 100% of the time".

The was certainly the case when the game stared, but has drastically changed over time.

Let me elaborate.

I like hunting Dragons, and have done so since almost the very beginning of the game, regardless of what other content may exsist, this is still my passion.

Let me elaborate bby using the following model:

Hunting Dragons with a Jedi toon

Exhibit A: In the first Jedi system, hunting Dragons on a Jedi was EXTREMELY difficult, and risky, if not crazy. There were several factors for this, the least of which was not Perma Death life loss. There was also the fact the with liitle to no melee def, if you got KD, you'd better hope the hell you could actually make yourself stand back up. As I said, it was an intenselt risky pursuit. There was also the fact that at complete template, you were permanently overt, and open to attacks from multiple players at all time. Also, let's not forget Saber TEF even at Novice Padawan (The first of three tiers) that was essentailly the same as being perma overt Rebel.

Exhibit B: Even at patch 9, and the remoavl of Perma Death long before (although there was a nast SKILL BOX LOSS system, that essentially prevented you from playing at all, for days at a time, or risk losing already gained boxes. Perma TEF, And Knight TEF were still active, and multiple BH could pulll YOUR exact mission from the terminal. This was really risky to, as you know, people tend to get pissy in the Graveyard, and if you hurt someone's feeling by outdamaging them, they would either

1. Get thier guild, or some other, to go voert, and come and gank you immediately, to get you out of the Graveyard.

2. Get thier guild BH (or BH buddies), to form a little vigilante posse of up to 5 BH, who also would come and gank you immdeiately.

ALso, Force cost, and Regen was a little different, and you could basically make it throug one Non-Juvi Dragon, and then needed 5-10 minutes to regen (unless you had mediatate and were using the perma meditation bug, which was fixed, so don't harp on that one).

All in all, both cases made the hunting of Dragons with a Jedi toon, pretty damn difficult, if not impossible. The Dragon example could be applied to alost any other situation in the game (DWB, Tusken Bunker, Genosian Cave, Nightsister Central), and IT KEPT JEDI HIDDEN, and as the poster above said, "YOU DIDN'T PLAY IT ALL THE TIME!.

It was alot more like having a Ferrari in the garage, that you would take for a spin occasionally, it wasn't the car you drove to work everyday.

Final Exhibit C: I still hunt Dragons, but it is pretty much like playing my old TKM/COmmando as far as killing Dragons, in other words, Jedi is a mundane, normal profession now. I log on, look around the graveyard (again, I don't need DOc buffs, or Entertainer buff preperation, which used to take up to 30+ minutes of preperation before even considering leaving the house), and spot one of the NOW PLENTIFUL DRAGON SPAWNS (becuase let me tell you, for almost the first 1 and half years of this game, finding a Dragon spawn was a difficulty in, and of itself). I then, without fear of TEFS, or PvE skill losss, or ruining my NON-ANTI DECAYED SABER, I suander in to the Graveyard to commence killing a Dragon, which goes like this,

1. Eat Foods

2. Armor Break, Power Hit, Head hit, Rinse, Repeat until the Dragon is dead (with the occasional KD on the Dragon, and Heal.

3. go home, sit, logout.

Now, on the off chance a BH should actually even come for me, I see him on Radar, Burst, or Force run into my nearby porta-house, or cloak, logout, come back in an hour. (Because I choose to PvP WHEN I WANT TO, NOT ONE SOME ELSE DICTATES).

I can kill Dragons now on the commercial breaks while watching "The Apprentice". Wow. That's really exciting, huh?

That's right, all the risk, fear, adrenalin, adventure, and downright coolness, has been stripped away from the once exciting pursuit of killing Dragons with a Jedi toon, and that goes, as I said, for just about any other area of the game.

You may my not agree with me, but that would more than likely be becuase you have no personal experience, in playing the previous system.

You may also flame me, and tell me this is a different game now, and that if I don't like it, I should quit, yada, yada, yada.

The point of all this is, some people do remember what the old game was like, and know what it feels like to have someone steal you Ferrari, and replace it with Mazda.

We just sometimes wish we had our old car back, becuase, it was a helluva alot cooler than thie peice of crap we have drive now.

Ok, flame away, but remember, if you do, at least have the muturity to back upany trash talking, with valid, relevant, logical arguments, or don't bother posting, becuase you only insult your own intelligence in so doing.

Old system, and new both have their problems. I refuse to grind my alt because I didn't put so much effort into this character for it. The new thing where your character you unlock on becomes the Jedi is a bit retarded I think... I liked the old system where your new character was a Jedi instead, but I guess that's how it goes.

Yeah. The whole purpose of unlockinga 2nd toon when you achieved Jedi was for just for this exact purpose.Players had another character to play with so they were notforced to constantly "drive their ferrari." Problem now thoughsince everyone has aferrari, even though some people don't drive it all the time, you still see 100 on the road.

As far as exciting content goes, well thats the devs fault. They dumbed-downeverythingto the point where it can be done while clipping your toenails.

Once again it is up to the individual player what he does with his $15.00 per month and you have no right to tell any player any different. If SOE wanted people to play thier toons on a limited bases they would put limitations on jedi like say 30 hours per month and then make tiers like preferred for $20 gets you 60 hours and premier for $30.00 gets you unlimited time. so obvisouly SOE doesnt care how long you play your jedi, or they would capitalize on it as i described above

Thanks.

It really drives the point home though becuase you can tell that the overwhelming majority of "JedI" that responded to this post,

Didn't even have the attention span, or comprehnsion level, to even bother attempting to read my post, before they showed how idiotic they are by repsonding to a post they clearly didn't even understand.

It's kinda like how they play thier "Jedi" as well.

Please learn to read a post people, BEFORE you open you mouth.

Like I said, it only makes you look as dense as you appperently are.

I was making a comparison about what Jedi was,

and what Jedi has become

Was that color coded enough for the learning disabled?

I kinda both agree and disagree with this post.Although I was not able to experience the perma-death, I don't agree that I would have played my jedi sparingly. If I understand it correctly, the risk in jedi was under your control. It's not like you log on and are immediately at risk. going perma-overt was your choice, noone said you have to get into the FRS. I said to myself the day that I finish my temp and the knight trials are available to me, I would not be doing them and not going into the FRS. That is my choice because although being in the FRS might be fun to fight it out for position (something different from the rest of the game), I had no desired to be attacked at anytime by any BH and his goon squad. Risk are fine, but I only agree to the risk if the consequences are suffered due to me making a mistake or knowingly doing something that I realize will bring consequences with it. Being perma-overt is one of those things that puts the risk out of your control and therefore it was an unfair system in my point of view...because I may not be bothering anyone. No bad mouthing, no name calling, no kill stealing, no bad behavior or anything, but because someone else feels like screwing with an overt jedi to get some excitement in their game, I would be the target and end up losing all that I worked for when I've done absolutely nothing wrong or my actions didn't warrant such a penalty.

For that reason, the FRS has never appealed to me. Jedi is not about power to me and therefore I don't care much for the old system. It seems to me that those who value power like the old system for jedi. I value the iconic status of jedi, the principles that made one a jedi, sith or dark jedi. I want to play my jedi for those reason's, not to be more powerful than the next jedi or group of people.

So It's not the risk many old jedi liked about the game, it's the power they had. Power is something everyone wants to some degree and many people base their whole lives on having power or being in control of someone else. To be able to stand up to 10 players at once and come out on top (saber block for the win). I'm sorry, I'm a very competitive person in everything I do, but I also have consideration for other people and engage in competition out of in sport not through malice, hate, jealousy or envy. That's the main reason, no player should have the power to force another player into PVP, because it will never get used like it's supposed too, it will be used as a grieving tool against those people dislike or hate, just like the OP showed in his post about jedi gettin ganked by other players.

The object of a game is to have fun, get away from real life or live out fantasiesin anyway that you like so as long as it doesn't hinder another persons ability to have their kind of fun or enjoy themselves. Once you start dipping into the roles of allowing any player to dictate how another player chooses to play the game, you are effectively saying that you cannot play this game how you like even though you pay the same subscription fee as everyone else. It's like saying to a car buyer of that ferrari that you can buy the car, but you can't drive it on mondays - Fridays and half of the day on saturdays. Sundays is all yours of course......so in my opinion, why even waste your money on buying that ferrari.....in swg terms, why waste your money paying to play the game to have what you consider fun only to have another player who does not work for SOE force you or not allow you to play the game the way you want to.

I don't mind the skill loss or the risk of playing jedi. I just don't want the risk to be directly related to the decision making of another person. That is why I dislike the BH system, but I tolerate it because I am in 80% control of how much vis I get.

So to tell me that I shouldn't play my jedi is simply a matter of opinion. another person's fun my involved being forced to play your alt, but mine isn't and I never want the game to be where another player forces me to log off and play another toon. I pay to play the game, not be the content for another player and not to be dictated to by another player who wants to force me to either log off or lose my skills. The players have too much power in that sense, only the devs should have that power.

now if a dev or group of devs, logged on, strapped on their ST, vader, palpatine, BH uniforms and started hunting jedi every once in a while, then I wouldn't mind it at all becuase it wouldn't be an everyday thing nor will it be out of spite or simply to ruin someones day. It would more than likely be for content. So no, I wouldn't mind losing a skill box to a BH dev so as long as they don't use their god mode commands and it's in the line of content or surprise player event. That would not only enhance my playing experience, it will also give me risk that won't be abused.

So although I agree with some of the things in this post, I will never agree to allow another player or group of players who don't work for SOE, but play this game for fun just like me, to dictate when, where, how and for how long I can play a game that I pay for to enjoy myself.

As for the person who said that the second character was created so you don't have to play your jedi all the time. I disagree. I think the devs gave a second character because they knew that people wanted to make a fresh new character and that more often than not, people did not create their main character with the idea of them becoming a jedi. Also, I think they did it so that you could remain anonymous due to the severe penalties of being a jedi. One of the things in the early days of jedi was to keep your identity secret so BH's wouldn't stalk you and make you suffer the perma death thing. Noone who spent time to master or level up jedi very high wanted every person on the server knowing they were a jedi. There were many people who were jedi that I talked to everyday and never knew they had a jedi toon. Having a second character slot to create a new toon gave you the ability to stay hidden and unknown, if for only the beginning of your jedi grind.

Now why they force the toon who unlocked to become the jedi, only thing I can think of is becuase there is no risk in losing all that you worked for.So it doesn't matter which toon is the jedi now. Actually the only thing that matters is that most people didn't make their main character with the intentions of becoming a jedi. I know I didn't and now my jedi is a human male with a name that is not very jedi like...in fact it's not even star warsy because I had no intentions on making this toon my most played one.....just over time I had accomplished so much with him, he became my most played and before the village came out, he was closer to unlocking jedi that I said screw it and allowed him to become one instead of start all over. In reality, I wanted a female trandosian with a more jedi like name to be my jedi. I had planned on that every since the devs told us our second toon would be unlockedand born a jedi.

We can all speculate on why the devs gave us a second slot, but at least to me, the reason cannot be as simple as so you don't have to play your jedi toon all the time. That may be a part of it, but I'm sure it was not the main reason why....because I have 7 other toons that I can play on different servers if this is the case, why would I need another one....I have friends on multiple servers and even guilding on multiple ones.

Bottom line is that noone, not one single jedi, BH, or normal profession or anyone who doesn't recieve a pay check from SOE should be able to tell any of us how any of our toons should be played as long as your playing within the rules SOE has set. The risk, the reward, the power of jedi has nothing to do with that at all or at least it shouldn't.

Simply put, I do not pay to play this game like john doe (who pays just like me for his own content and fun) wants me to. I may not share john doe's vision of what is fun or risky. Therefore, whether its the old jedi system or the new one, we all have our own threshold for fun and what's risky. Noone else can tell you what those two things are. Risk and Reward are in the eyes of the beholder. Because for example, losinga jedi to permadeath might not be that big of a risk to player A, he may enjoy grinding from the start (some people actually enjoy the grind more than the finished template mainly because there is nothing to do when finished). For player B, they might hate the grind and therefore value their accomplishments as a jedi and don't want to risk permadeath. So the risk vs reward is different for everyone. That is something that cannot be simulated in this game under one single rule or lump sum of rules. versatility is one of the greatest traits in the human race and that cannot be fully reproduced in any virtual game fully. Therefore games need avenues so that all people can seek out their idea of what'sfun, risky and rewarding. If that doesn't exist a game, then we simply move on to a game that it does exist in. I think SWG is pretty good compared to other games of it's genre to allow us that freedom. Sure it's not perfect and has some flaws (FRS/BH system/GCW), but hey, you are still paying to play just like I am and that tells me they are doing something right or good enough to keep us around, even if it's just the name and idea of star wars.....whatever the reason, it's enough to keep usplaying.
