Jedi Master~Padawan Relationship

I've recently thought a lot about this, I tried numerous times to get a response from someone on the inside due to the fact that I'm about to start a degree for game design, and I really wanted to do my internship with SOE. I wanted someone on the inside to see it before I released it. I was unable to get a response from any of the directions i've submitted, except from a person decently well known around these forums for his FRS revamp proposal, as such he will have seen it first because i gave him my word that i'd PM it to him before I posted it.

Anyway, with some of the basics understood.. I started this game as a Bounty Hunter, with the idea that my good deeds might help me unlock a jedi. For 3 years prior to the game coming out all i ever wanted to do was become a jedi master and in the name of roleplay, run my own jedi academy. I finally decided it was time to release this and see what the general thoughts might be. Please understand in advance that I am interested in constructive feedback as this is a work in progress.. and if you flame i'll just flat ignore it.

  • Jedi Padawans - A jedi who has surpassed the initiate levels, and has obtained Padawan, will be able to earn his experience as it currently stands, or he will be able to find an FRS level Jedi knight who will accept him as his padawan. When a jedi is accepted as an apprentice: (I'm figuring the best way to do this might be a spin-off of the unity(marriage) system as currently talking with GIzmo I think his idea for the knight crafting a padawan braid and giving it to the padawan would be great.) The jedi knight who is becoming a master will become flagged to him. A different color in his view.. for working purposes lets say he'll highlight black.(For those that aren't sure what I mean, i'm referring to the player color, such as your own faction being purple.. an enemy red and all that.)

  • Jedi Knights- A Jedi Knight will have the option to take on a padawan or not at his/her discretion. Jedi who opt for this route shall receive the ability to gain FRS experience(or something similar) to work towards earning the Jedi Master Title. This will be done through the Master~Padawan bond.

After forming the bond, the Jedi knight will gain access to a new set of commands.. which I haven't really named. These commands will be using a system similar to the Squad Leader profession, except that the commands will only affect the apprentice. These will apply "buffs" of a type to the apprentice in the form of speeding up some force powers, improving defense, and the like.

  • Feel the force.

  • A jedi's strength flows from the force.

  • Anger, fear, agression.. the dark side are they.

  • Do or do not, there is no try.

  • A jedi uses the force for knowledge and defense, NEVER for attack.

Of course these commands will be editable in the same way the squad leader's are so that a jedi can roleplay his side of the force should he so choose. Also of note, master and padawan shall generate no visibility for each other while under the flag of Master and Apprentice. The Master will be able to defend the Padawan and step in as necessary to ensure that his apprentice is not overcome(up to and including Bounty Hunters).

In return the Jedi Knight will receive a bonus as previously stated toward earning the jedi master title, this would have to be a (scalable) percentage of the jedi experience earned by his apprentice. As a counter to this the padawan will earn a "concentration" mod in all of the boxes he learns which allow these buffs to stick longer and/or not be lost to a powerful hit from something.

The Jedi knight will have to earn a specific amount of experience.. whether that be FRS or "Master" experience and then see his padawan through the jedi knight trials. When this happens and his padawan becomes perma-overt he will earn the title. I mention that he has to earn a specific amount of experience before just taking the padawan to knight, just so someone couldn't get the title by just catching someone who isn't quite done with the trials and helping them for the title.

Modifier ideas

As I have stated previously, the master and padawan relationship once entered will last until the padawan reaches knighthood. During this time the Master may travel with his padawan anywhere without generating visibility, and he will earn FRS experience points through the squad leader type system. By giving these modifiers which i'm thinking should include:

  • Saber Speed +

  • Saber Damage +

  • Force Power Delay -

  • Jedi/Saber Toughness +

  • Open for more suggestions here...

While in the presence of his master, he will gain some basic buffs of some kind to promote staying close to his Master, whereas the Knight will gain sensitivity to the surroundings(an increase in radar range?) or a system message if he senses incoming danger: i.e. A bounty hunter coming for his padawan, refer to another post I made concerning that: Jedi Sense

Also, for completing a Padawan's transition to Knighthood, the Master will gain a significant bonus of FRS xp. Not sure how to go about calculating that. More to come later, this is version 0.5.

*Edited just to make the post look a little better and fix my clicky*

I think this is a great idea! We could only hope that people who get a chance to intern with SOE would have this kinda foresight. I know its prolly not ever gonna happen since we are in a different timeline or so they say...but I still believe this to be an awesome idea.

5 stars my friend!

I agree whole-heartedly with any implementation of the Padawan~Master interface. I also liked the modifiers that you outlined here. You guys keep up the good work. Would be awesome to see this in-game /sigh.

i like it alot. 2 changes i would like to see though

The idea of a master crafting a padawan braid and giving it to his padawan just seems kinda strange. The thought of a master running around with a braid of hair in his back pocket that he is trying to give to an apprentice is just a little wierd. I know its supposed to be symbolic, but there are better ways of going about this.

Instead of a braid, the master crafts a peice of jewelry, or a clothing item to give to the padawan that the padawan must wear for the entire apprenticeship period. Better yet, they take two clothing/jewelry items that already exists, and "imbue"them with the force or something like that. Thenthey will work like a unity ring, and the apprentice will have to wear it at all times, and the master as well.

Also, if the padawan has hair, the master should be able to add a padawan braid through an image design screen to the padawan that the padawan must wear untill knighthood.

The other change i would like to see would be the whole path to jedi master. It should be a mix of xp gained from taking apprentices, as well as xp gained from the frs.

The knight should have to achieve a certain rank in the frs at least once(not maintain the rank forever) and train lets say 4 apprentices to knight status(the exact number of apprentices is subject to change, just a number ithrew out there)The padawans the knight trains will have to learn either 50% or 75% (numbers can be tweaked of course) of their skills while under the knight. When the padawanreachesknight, the master will get a point, and would need 4 pointsof "apprenticexp" as well as having obtained a certain rank in the frs

This way, knights will be reluctant to take on apprentices that already have alot of training in the force. This is true to the movies, since knights/masters won't train jedi that are too old. The amount of FRS xp to gain ranks should be lessened to make up for the amount of "apprentice xp" needed to make jedi master as well. Also, this would force masters to be very careful when choosing an apprentice, because if their apprentice doesn't make knight, they have just wasted alot of time.

I also think that the frs should be open to jedi of all skills at all times, and that there should be a seperate faction for jedi, and entering the frs would declare the overt as light jedi, or dark jedi. The only problem would be padawans using normal professions in the frs. Maybe make it so that two jedi that are fighting each other in the frs should only be able to use force skills in combat against each other.

This might be difficult to code, but worth it. With everyone being able to enter the frs when they want, padawans will gain experience in pvp with the force, and get a better idea of how force powers work against other jedi, so that they can better plan their template, instead of getting to knight and finding that their template isn't that effective against other jedi.

Also this would open up fun duels between two knights, and their padawans. I like the idea of anyone attacking the padawan to be attackable by his/her master.

thats all i really have to say, and again, i love your ideas about the master/padawan relationship

Hm, a good thought that is. Well, firstly a master is allowed only one padawan at a time of course. Secondly, as stated before this is a voluntary system. You will still be able to earn FRS points, and jedi experience in the current manner. Unfortunately there is no way via code to restrict someone from doing what you're suggesting. I'm afraid in this case we would be forced to hope people would treat it with respect considering the subject.

The only thing I could think of off hand would be that they have to complete a quest together. Also, it's not "ultra-rapid" FRS experience/points, but more a vessel for roleplaying the interaction and allowing for a way to remove the need to continuously kill overt/MBH/Jedi to maintain your standing and advance.

yea i was thinking about this too. I don't think you can limit this. Its just like when people use to spam that they are selling/buying apprentice points, or shouting for someone to tumble for them to get easy medic xp. Anything that can possibly be used to gain cash will be. If someone can make some cash by being someones padawan, then they will. I guess its just something that we will have to deal with

Concerning the above, I like the idea of the padawan braid being in an Image Design style screen. As for the jewelry: "Posession is forbidden". The thing is, both parties will have to accept the Master~Padawan relationship, and at that time this image design screen should pop up and allow the master to add a padawan braid to his apprentice.

The other change i would like to see would be the whole path to jedi master. It should be a mix of xp gained from taking apprentices, as well as xp gained from the frs.
The knight should have to achieve a certain rank in the frs at least once(not maintain the rank forever) and train lets say 4 apprentices to knight status (the exact number of apprentices is subject to change, just a number i threw out there) The padawans the knight trains will have to learn either 50% or 75% (numbers can be tweaked of course) of their skills while under the knight. Concerning this, I would say these ideas have a lot of merit, but will require some working with the numbers. I would agree that it needs to be a combination of both instead of entirely PVP related, especially for a Light Jedi. Perhaps, with a dark jedi it is very similar to this but less "apprentice xp". (Quick and easy the dark side is.)

Very nice proposal. I will comment on it sometime later, when I have thought about it in more detail.

For now, here is an idea that just sprang to my mind:

It would be nice if thethe force progressionboxes and titlesof Knight, Guardian and Master would be independent of the FRS and thus not gained by reaching certain FRS boxes (which have titles and ranks of their own anyway).

Instead, if a Jedi Knight takes on a Padawan, he/she will instantly be granted the title of Jedi Guardian and be the Guardian of that very Padawan. The Jedi Master Box will be earnedwhen the Jedi Guardian's Padawan finishes the Knight Trials to become a full Jedi Knight him- or herself.

PS.:By the way,it's Glzmo with an "L" not an "i"
