Thread: Crafting your Template

I have read a ton of "How's my template" or "need template advise" posts, so here's a good guide to help you...I hope.

Jedi is a complicated profession because it has so many possibilities. It can often be hard to decide what you really want. Here are some pointers to help you out.

  • First, you need to examine your play style. The easiest way to do this is to look at the professions that you have enjoyed the most and use that as a basis. I was a big fan of TKM/Pistoleer/smuggler, as well as TKM/Swords. I knew right away that I wanted MLS. It also supported my vision of what a Jedi is.

  • The next step is to decide on what 2 things you want your jedi to be an "expert" at. This doesn't mean you have to have a double mastery, but it does show you where your points will mostly go. As I have already decided on MLS, I knew that I wanted to me a master melee type. For this you need to have speed, accuracy, and good damage output. The latter can only be achieved with my template with MLS and good pearls. The first one would mean that enhancer 1000 or 3000 should be there. The other thing I wanted was to be able to stave off damage as much as possible. Defender 4400 is a good choice for that. Healing is another needed part, so 4000 healer. Now I have to decide...do I want Aura or Force Armour? Aura has an advantage of being a fire and forget (al least for 45 seconds or so) with no force upkeep...Force Armour lasts a lot longer, but costs force to maintain. You also don't get additional defenses with it. I decided that Aura or def 0040 was good. At this point, I really needed to make a choice, doI want Avoid incap or not?I didn't like the total tank concept, and wanted to have channel for rapid refresh, so i decided on enhancer 3002. I could also change to get Force Drain by dropping Def to 3340 and get enhacer 3003, but decided that the defender was a better choice, better Force Max and defenses, and I don't see that force drain is as effective as it could me...persoanl choice.

  • You need to make sure your template isn't trying to do too much. Keep it simple. If you over generalize, you lose out on key components that will ultimately hamper your template and make you disgruntled.

  • Don't rely on one skill to make or break you. Nerfs happen and tactics change. If you key everything around one thing, ie. Cloak, you leave yourself open to having that skill nerfed and your template crippled.

  • Ignore FOTM, but look at your particular style and what you feel your jedi should have. Don't number crunch, or just follow a fad. This is your character, and you should be able to roleplay them. Who cares if you aren't the best of the best, are you having fun?

  • Once you start gaining in skills, you might realize that there is a skill that you really like and your template will change. "Experience may change during gameplay"

Good Luck, hope this makes sense

This is a simple yet very thoughtful post. You defined what I struggled with for days before comming to the same conclusions. I was master swordsman/ master doc before jedi and my jedi template is almost exactly the same as yours. Hope people read this as it will really take the stress out of OMG which way do I go syndrome.

Very good advice The best template is the one you know and love. No matter how good a template looks on paper it's only as good as the person behind it. If your template doesn't suit your syle then it will just plain suck.

I really agree with you but TBH people who ask for template advice want an advantage in PvP the way the game is now. So when the game changes (nerf, cu, spilled coke on dev computer) there temp isn't the best anymore and they will post again wanting to know what is winning now. Thanks for this post, it's great advice, just don't want you to get frustrated when the vocal people don't listen and you continue to see template help posts.

I normally dont reply to many posts, mainly because they are not worthy of a reply. I felt this one needed a reply.because it was 1) Helpful to those that are at a crossroad and unsure how to proceed. 2) laid outin a manner that shows some maturity. You can group with me anytime brother.

For the ones that are always crying"Nerf" (which I assimilate as "Crying Wolf"), It shows your maturity level is lacking and is truly a disgrace to your profession and upbringing. A Jedi should be a "standardssetter" meaning they should be of a mentor mindset. A shining beacon for the younger players to emulate and learn from. Acting like the universe revolves around you because you made Jedi (Earned or not) is not that beacon of light. What it does is disgrace the profession and make the masses resent you and that will eventually come back around to you.

On a final note, be helpful to each other. Support each other. Be approachable and dont be afraid to answer questions and aid the younger players. The rewards will seriously out-weigh the negative aspects. Being a Jedi gives you a unique opportunity to RP and add flavor to a game that everyone knows is a bit buggy and needs some serious fine tuning. Remember....this too shall pass.

Its nice to hear someone say this every now and again. Personally I think the best Jedi id the one that suits the player and allows him/her to do the things they want to do. I chose a template that many consider weak but I love it. MLS because to me itdefines what a Jedi is and distinguishes them from mere force users. Enhancer 4004 as it gives me the abilities that set a Jedi above an ordinary character and compliment the purely melee skills of MLS. Defender 4040 as it gives me a little innate armour and aura for some avoidance. Healer 4100 for big heals, improved infusion as a little boost in battle and wound healing because I love being able to heal my buddies. This also helps me roleplay a benign light side Jedi.

Nice post Jacella. Keep updating it if others have suggestions. To me, it's all about playstyle, as outlined in my own template guide.

I doubt it would get a sticky since they try to avoid too many of them, but send me a PM reminder with the link and I could add it to my template guides thread that is stickied as a first "how to choose your template" post.

You seem to be forgetting something. Jedi are not supposed to be hanging out in starports helping noobs learn how to use a cdef or technically being seen much at all. And if you think I'm going to stop and help someone that could be a BH just setting me up for a kill your crazy. I have seen BH's do very cruel things to new jedi that dont know better so trying to tell Jedi to stop and help everyone and be nice to everyone when most people are out to kill them nowadays is naive. BH's have to many tricks up their sleeves nowadays for example the one they are exploiting now is asking to join their mark's grind group as a regular player and then attacking while in the same group as their mark and the Jedi cannot attack back at all due to being grouped with the BH. Of course he can drop group but usally by that time he figures out whats happened and its too late.

So my point is you cannot expect Jedi, the one class of player that is constantly forced into PvP to defend themsleves, to be friendly to strangers and be a "Shining example" of anything...

as a noob (ie, 80 pts to go to full temp), I found the thought process behind this helpful. What I would find even more helpful is possibly an examination on the benefits of specific skills/branches and how they are useful in certain situations such as PvP, PvE, vs BH, etc. I kind of look at the choices as somewhat of a modular approach and I would find it helpful to learn how each module both adds to the overall full temp as well as the interaction of each module with the other modules (ie, force speed being helpful to MLS, etc.).

thanks
