Thread: Remove alot of the Jedi by disabling visibility from NPC's

The story: I was away from the game for quite some time, long enough to completely drop from the terminal. When I started to go back to the game, I thought I should try to keep myself off for as long as I could. A friend was finishing up her Jedi, so I spent some time grinding with her. I started to group with her and experienced the first time the feeling of being able to grind together with friends without bothering about visibility.

A week passed, weekend came along, and I was still not on the terminal. As always, however, it was decided to do some general pve. We wanted entrance to the Blackscale Compound so me and my guild fought down to the bottom of Ryatt Trail. On the second level there's alot of crazed rodians that must be defeated. And becouse of doing that, I was back on the terminal, even if I up to this point was very careful about my visibility.

Back on the regular planets again, there was nothing more I could do but equipping my lightsaber and start running my enhancer macros, lightning drop from my heels, infusion flashing, a globe of light showing everybody I have forcearmor on, and the lightsaber safely in my hand. From being invisible for a whole week, I was again a fully visible lightshow for people to bother about. Becouse I had participated in game content, while being careful to not be seen by a single player and now I must protect myself becouse of that.

And this got me thinking of something I only vaguely mentioned before.

Only players bother about visibility, and people say "if you dont want to get hunted, dont be seen". Ofcourse, that option means not playing the game at all, and all Jedi know that, becouse practically every pve mission out there involves killing NPC's. And once you are on the terminal, you need to protect yourself, so again you are the very lightshow people hate.

What would happen if NPC's was disabled from the visibility system, is that visibility suddenly becomes an option. You are still able to participate in almost all of the game's content. But you can also do so freely, without a single player seeing you and bother about it. Unlike the players, no NPC care if you are a glowbat wielding lightshow or not.

What would happen is that alot of Jedi start to find themselves rewarded for staying out of sight from other players. This is, as far as I concern, one of the greatest ways to heavily reduce the sightings of Jedi out there, thereby seemingly reducing the Jedi population.

PvP in a player city =You are a player nuisance, Get hunted

Not be seen by players beyond your grouped friends = You are one less Jedi according to other players, Walk free

To sum up:

I have already accepted the consequences of being Jedi: I am not allowed to be seen wherever I want.

Now if the system would support it while still allowing me to play the game, while punishing people who break this rule.

By disabling NPC visibility this would happen:

1. Creating the optionto hide

- Allows a Jedi to play her character like it should be; a refugee that must hide.
- If you can hide (without stopping to play the game),it creates an illusion that Jedi are rare
- Rare Jedi means less hate and thus less nerfs.

- Makes sense to the now highly inaccurate quote "Stay off the terminals".

2. BH's focusing on Jedi who abuses the systemrather than chasing around the bush on Kashyyyk
- Cleaning up Starports
- Taking out Jedi who foolishlydared into the GCW (where they do not belong)
- Taking out Jedi who are camping popular pve spots without leaving when other players come along.

The two that would loose on this are:

* Jedi who want other Jedi to take their fall
When BH's take missions from a greater pool, it's less likely they are hunted for camping Theed starport. If NPC's are removed from visibility, more focus will go directly at thoose who are seen by other players

* Bounty Hunters who seek easy targets
Now they have to go on targets who are prepared for them, with maxed out pvp templates, while less daring support templates are still hiding.

The people who would win on this are:

* The non-Jedi community, becouse there's less Jedi to be seen, and we know that thoose that are seen have the entire BH community after them without chasing cavemenrumours in the outer-rim.

* The general Jedi community, becouse now they are promotedto pay proper respect to the non-Jedi community. This means less hate and less nerfs.
* BH's who want to upkeeptheir role andwant closer/easier to findtargets.

* Pve players who are never seen by other players are allowed to run quests in peace, making it worth to purchase the ToOW expansion.

--- Cancelled 24th November 2006
Reason: The lack of multiplayer pve content and Star Wars feel.
For 3 years I have tried to find excuses to stay in game but only the expansions offered me what I subscribed for in the first place: A multiplayer Star Wars pve experience with friends around the globe. I found friends but with almost no addition of pve content they dropped out one by one. Now it's my turn.

Totally agree....

Id rather not let anyone see Im a Jedi .. but look at DWB...Avatar.... Geo caves..... Vette.... and tell me as a Jedi I can't do any of that because Ill be hunted by BH is too much...

BH's say all the time.. " stay off the terms"

So becoming Jedi means we can no longer play at all? or forced PvP....

Sony.... is this your Idea of Jedi in the star wars galaxies?

I can see your point, but I believe a change in the BH terminal system would help. Let me elaborate.

I have been full temp and out killing NPCs for 6 weeks. In that time, I have been visited by BH's only 5 times, one of which involved in me dying.

I have a friend who reached full temp 10 days ago. Since then, he has been hunted over 30 times, often with 30 minutes to an hour between multiple BH attacks.

Neither of us PVP a lot, or are particularly active against Imperial NPCs. We both paly our jedi about the same amount.

Now, onto the terminals part. I have also been a MBH for approximately 18 months of the past 20 months, so I know how the terminals display jedi. They often show the same names over and over for the first few pages, and then a different name over the next 4 or 5 pages. As the current hunting system does not allow for names, most BH simply go for the first "imperial/rebel jedi" they see on page 1. This is resulting in many players being hunted non stop, day in day out, until they are killed. While other players go days or weeks without seeing any BHs, even though they kill NPCs still.

This isn't down to a lack of hunters on Farstar; in fact we probably have more than any other server....maybe less than Bria of Ahazi, relatively speaking. A change to the terminals, allowing more popular players to "slide down" the ratings, would help the more unlucky jedi to enjoy the game without being hunted as much. In terms of your generating visibility by fighting in starports, I suggest using the less popular towns....unless of course you have the misfortune to live on Lok

Sorry but I just cant agree with this.

If you want to not be bothered with Forced PvP, Bounty Hunters etc... drop all your Force skills and pick up non-Jedi professions again.

Think of playing a Jedi in SWG as having your difficulty mode on 'hard' while everyone else plays on 'easy'. Frankly I'm surprised that an old vet like you posted this.

I welcome Bounty Hunter attacks, they're exciting. I love a good fight against a good BH. And I especially love a quick fight against a bad BH.

The best... running from a trash-talking, jerky BH and making him waste all that time and resources.

I see exactly where you're coming from on this, but you're not engaging with the point that she was making. Bascially, the hunting system needs to be revamped in order that the visibility you get is reflected in the hunters you receive. As it stands, a player can be stood slicing up stormtroopers and watch as a jedi and BH run past fighting, because the jedi tapped a meatlump with his training saber outside coronet.

I'm all for players being hunted, but right now the time does not fit the crime. I think that's the angle MsNil is coming from too...

The vis element i feel is still a hangover from pre patch 9 days.

Although we were meant to play our jedi i do not feel that Jedi was meant to be our main role in game. In a sense i feel they invisioned Jedi as a novelty that people would play as an alt and not their main.

However when patch 9 hit Jedi could be used as a day to day character and this vision was lost.

I do feel sorry for those that do not like PvP and i will refer from using the easy way out by stating that "jedi was not meant to be easy" and that "There should be risks".
But i do feel that there should be some sort of risk from hunting in a populated area (be it players or npcs) but again we need the reward from doing so. i.e. a reason to fight the bounty hunters.

Just my opinion

I dont mind getting visibility from NPCs, so I am indifferent. However, I do mind trash-talk from BHs saying "Stay of the terms" since most BHs dont realize that any content in the game involves NPCs.

On a further note, the problem you describe does exist - if you want to participate in content and not get hunted by BHs afterwards, you need to put your Jedi on the shelf for 3 weeks. Rather than eliminating visibility from NPCs (and open all gates for faction farming and such), maybe the decay period should be shortened to 3 or 4 days - that way Jedi can do their weekend adventures if they choose to do so, and can do other PvE without BH visits on the next weekend if they want.

Ah, I misunderstood reading the post too quick... my bad

Didn't it used to be that if you killed a BH it cleared you from the terms? I know this doesn't happen anymore...

Constant attacks are not fun, and a Jedi's gameday shouldn't be just fighting off BH after BH.

The most complaints Jedi have about Jedi v BH is that Jedi have no reward. Well, if you kill your BH and get thenext 24 hours or sooff from being attacked, that'd be a pretty nice reward no?

just a thought

Bountyhunters is my content and easy pvp rating. I want vis to stay as it is. Why become a Jedi if you whine over the forced pvp?Become a Rifleman/Ranger instead if you wanna be acarebear

Guys, guys guys - I think you're all missing the OP's point.

Consider the following:

1) BH is not effective for reducing the number of Jedi in the game. This is not viable and will never be.

2) If, considering the above, what is the next best thing? Give Jedi a reason not to display their powers to other players beyond a lack of being hunted.

3) A possible reason for this would be a lack of BH attacks AND some kind of reward system (maybe increase our power as Jedi at an inverse proportion to how much visibility we have?).

4) Now this would then follow that NPC visibility would be removed so that Jedi could pursue this goal, yet still play the game with their *grouped* friends. It makes sense to only get visibility from player characters if (3) was in effect.

5) If (4) is not instated, then consider this: A player Jedi manages to go completely unseen from other players, they no longer have their saber equiped, they no longer have an infusion macro running, no forcarmour - nothing to make any players think they are any more than a normal lvl80 toon... Then they go on a quest and in the middle of nowhere kill a meatlump. Now - in case of BH they have to run around with all their pvp-prep macros running, touting their Jedi-ness for all the world to see - just in case of a BH attack...

My first instinct on reading the original post was nooo - don't make it any easier, but on contemplation I agree 100% with the intentions.

EDIT: And if you want to stay visible and be hunted (I probably would do ) then that has in no way been taken away from you...

Being on the terminals should be a result of participating in the GCW, not just participating in regular npc missions. It seems soe is punishing any jedi who would like to get a high end loot item and would like to try a challanging quest. BH have boss missions now, why cant we use the tougher npc missions as our boss missions? This would keep alot of bored jedi out of the GCW, which seems to be what everyone wants who isnt jedi.

That is very nice, I love spinach ... If you do not eat spinach you should drop all your Jedi skills and become a tailor. I think that all Jedi should like spinach.

We should not get any vis from non faction aligned NPCs.. It never made any sense.
