Well, I got bored and did three surveys over three days here are my results:
Day 1- killed 10 elders, looted 9 crystals
Day 2- killed 10 elders, looted 2 crystals
Day 3- killed 10 elders, looted a CA and a decent pike
So, no offense but, if you are complaining you killed 10 elders and got no crystals a lot of other people have the some problem, its all completely random.

Nice post on Elders That sould clear things up for people, who complain about not getting loot from 3-5 elder kills
Sux for me I seem to have the luck with elders as your day 3 LOL

not only that...but there are other high level npc's on dath equivelant to to NS that drop just as good loot. Go kill some SMC. 2k around the poi and have fun.

I killed something like 6 Singing Mountain Clan Guardians the other day and got some heavy duty leather for my trouble.
I killed a few witches , initiate and huntress and generally got very little. A clear crystal.
I basically ran a full buff on those. Very disappointing.
Not had an attachment from SMC yet , dont know if im unlucky or what.
The Councilwoman ive only seen once and is so incredibly nasty.....

Council women are equiv to elders, not sure about Guardians.

Sigh, I just spent over 6 hours of my life hunting Elders with 2 characters and the only decent thing I looted were 2 premium crystals. 2 decent items from +40 Elders 
They tuned 49 -2 and 43 -7 :/

SMC gaurdian drop "select" crystals and in now way are these ladies even close to as hard as elders....They drop good CA's and AA's from time to time.....I would say they are more like NS protectors with dubble the HAMS. Still not that hard if you can do blast damage
SMC Council Women are the Equivilent to NS elders but they do not hit as hard as elders do.... not even close

Day 1- killed3 elders, looted2,938 creditcrystals and 4 heavy leather clasps
Day 2- killed7 elders, looted1 crystal, a bunch of credits, and an exceptional locked container
Day 3- killed2 elders, looted a base NSL, a terrien nag LVA, and creds
