Thread: From the Husband of an Image Designer

First off, greetings to you image designers both old and new. My wife started this game wanting nothing more than to be a Master Image Designer and then to work on another combat class for fun. I encouraged her in this and watched her grow from a Novice Image Designer and over the weeks of practice into a Master. She was content toletpeople simply tip her without any set charge. Then things began to change.

Gah! Sorry for the 2 posts. Not used to posting here. Ok, back to where I was. A few things happened:

1. We would be on missions and people would basically message her expecting her to drop EVERYthing she was doing at the moment, no matter how far she was from a city, and run to a major city to do ID work on them. Very often she would do this and spend an hour and a half doing ID work for 500 credits. This wasn't bad, she was never after the money from doing this. They would basically just run off into the blue afterwards without even a moment of thanks because this is what, to them, she was there to do.

2. People were rude. She would tell them she could get to them in about an hour and they would message back that THEY were in a hurry and that she needed to tend to them immediately. Got old fast.

3. People satarted saying that ID were rude, strange people. Well D'UH! YOU made them this way, jerks. Excuse me there. Would you go up to a Master Architect and demand a large house for 500-1000k? I wouldn't do that even if I were providing ALL of the materials. You are paying for skills. If you don't like it, don't seek them out.

The wife and I argued that Master ID'ers should not charge 10k per service when she was working on it. Now we see WHY they do. If you're not willing to pay for the MID's skills AND time (an hour and a half is a LONG time in the game) then do you AND them a favor and don't seek them out. Whatever you do, DO NOT be a jerk to them. They don't owe you crap, no matter how much you pay them. They are providing a service, business model or not, and if you don't like it, don't bother them.

Thanks for listening to my rant.

Woot! nice rant.

I turn off my title when not 'in service' to the community, but that's just me.

Personally, I went for ID for selfish reasons (the whole disguise factor for smuggler) So, while I will ID someone when I'm practicing dancing or something, andI like the credits I get from the nice tippers (so far it's paid for itself), I don't do it for any other reason, which really gives me room to go 'f-off, if you're too busy to wait for me - I don't need your business anyway.'

Like I said, that's just me - ymmv.

in what way did they change (bad/good)?

But it kinda sounds as if her methods maynot be solid.. but i would basically setup a price list of certain changes and request for a tip prior to making the changes. But you must offer some kind of garrentee, that if they don't like it right away you can keep changing it for free.

Or If LA can eventually add in something like a price set when making image designs for people, kinda like the trade window, but add it to the Commit window for image designers. Put a price request there and when the person getting the change can see the change and also a price request and they can accept or decline.

Lately, I've been running around with my title to Master Musician, not Master ID. Some people still know that I'm an ID'er and seek me out, I help them. But it has really cut down on the number of tells I get. I plan to open a shop and create an email with my complete price list that I'll send to people inquiring. If they don't like the prices, I don't help them. Simple as that. I've mostly had nice people I've helped, but there have been a couple of rude ones and I do refuse to help them again!

I've been using a set price list, I make sure I tell people in advance but I let them pay me after. People seem more than willing to pay my prices and I have never had a customer run away without paying. Don't be afraid to charge a fee, the people who really want their image changed are most often more than willing to reward generously.

I do the same thing... turn the title off, or set it to what is most fitting for the activity I am curently engaged in... dancer, musician, swordsman.... It is only on when I feel like strutting, or when I am wanting business that the MID labal comes out. Hopefully, your wife has had enough good customers that she gets referrals, like I do. I find that referrals are often as nice as the original customer.

I also only work for tips currently, btw, and havent yet seen a reason to change. Maybe I have been lucky in my clientele.

When asking for an image designer I just send her a tell and say let me know when you are available. Image designing is not something that has to happen the very instant. As for prices, she charges 2k which is more than fair for a MID's skills.

Well, from experience I have found some ID very rude, and there is no excuse why they should take it out on the entire playing community for those fewrude peoplethat they have come across. I tried speaking to one ID in the game and asked her if it was possible that she could re-image my apperance first if she had the time and then how much would it cost me I feel that everything that someone has worked hard to get should at least be compensated for there time no matter what profession your in. I sat there watching here take every male char. as I waited for some type of response from her I thought it was very rude to not even get a response to my message and then when she was done with two people to look directly at me and still give no acknowledgement that I was even there. I felt well hell I really dont no how you made it this far, but really I can spend my money on other things or find someone that will help me out. This ID has now made a bad name for herself because I have told my friends and others not to even deal with her to find any other ID on my server and spend there money on them.

Hmm, it sounds like maybe she wasn't getting your messages. Are you sure she wasn't just using her group chat? Did you try sending a /tell, or were you just using the spatial chat window? It would be lame if someone just ignored you and pretended you weren't there, but it would be incredibly bad business, so it seems more like a miscommunication.

NovaOne,

Hopefully this was just a case where the ID did not get your message. When I am doing ID work I do not see ANY of my tells, because I work in group chat only. It is nearly impossible to do ID work and "chat" or answer tells at the same time. I do however, use my AFK message, saying that I am working and please send and email if you need ID work or just have questions.

Surprising enough, there are many people who do not even know that you can customize the AFK message, so maybe this is why the ID you are refering to does not use it.

But, of course just as there are rude customers, I am sure there may be rude ID's out there, so I am not making light of what happened to you, just simply offering another possibility.
