I can accept that it may be hell to program or whatever they said. If that was the case then why is it if you transfer to another server and your name is taken it asks you to input a new name ? the whole process is done in 2 seconds.. after you find a name thats not taken of course.
Any other thoughts ?

The name is the identification of the player as well as the character. If they allowed name changes, then some jerk could grief the heck out of someone and then just change his name to escape the consequences. If someone wants to be jerk and run away from it, then they have to start from the beginning with a new character.
Sort of helps to keep the griefing down if you'd have to regrind your skills to escape from the consequences of negative actions.

Everything you do is attached to your first name. Your last name is dispensable and changeable (my dancer, who is married, got her last name changed in game). Your first name is tied into EVERYTHING. If you craft, it's attached to everything you make. If you have houses, it's attached to every building you own. Getting your first name changed essentially rerolls your character and can REALLY mess you up. It's not something that should, IMO, be changeable by another player. Last names maybe.

I was under the impression that last names were not changeable because they were also (but to a lesser extent) tied to stuff, so it was only done by a CSR if it was vulgar. How did you get your last name changed, Fuschia?

That's a big fat dirty lie that CSRs tell you because they don't want everyone and their mother beating down their pixellated door begging for name changes. The honest truth is, I got lucky. Our server CSR, Melissa, is AWESOME. Apparently she had to chastise Geen (Ava's husband) one night for his language (teehee) and they got to talking. Geen can charm the pants off anyone, I don't know how he does that. Anyway, he said something about having a lurking CSR in spatial one night when we were in the cantina, I said "Hey lurking CSR, can you change my lastname?" And the next thing I know is I'm getting a tell from Melissa asking what I want it changed to. Within seconds, I'd gone from Avadiha Lona to Avadiha Lona-Soep. She's done it for quite a few of the married folk on Tarquinas. She's the best CSR ever! And it didn't do anything to any of my crafted items, housing, droids, etc. Your last name has no bearing on your character - that's why more than one person can have the same last name.

Maybe the reason that you can't change your last name without CSR intervention is that there would be repeat offenders who would keep changing their last names to dirty things over and over again.

see now i get that its tied to almost everything.. but it cant be so hard and the server will crash is you have to change your name.. i have a friend that just came to my server and her name was taken. Before she could log in a name change box came up. So its not as impossible or hard as they play off
As for lastnames.. i dont see why or how they could/would be tied to anything.. sounds like more BS told due to lack of real answers. I purposly didnt include a last name for my char with the intent on getting one later.
And the comment about the wookies.. i never thought about that.. very good point.

As for the last name being abused and stuff. I really dont see how thats a big consern. Shouldnt/wouldnt the same naming effects and punishments be in place ?

Changing your last name isn't a big deal. The reason it's not something you can do at the drop of a hat is because EVERYONE would want name changes constantly. I mean, if I were being harassed by, say, a short green Rodian named Joe Mama, and the next day his last name had changed and he was now Joe Daddy, I would still be pretty reassured that that were the same person harassing me. However, I think the reason players can't change first names (this is something I found out from Melissa when she changed my last name) is that in order to change your last name, the CSR has to temporarily change your first name as well. I blinked and missed it when she did mine, but when she changed my friend Kelath's last name to reflect her husband's name, I saw the temporary first name change. It was really odd. That is something that players SHOULD NOT be able to do, because that has HUGE potential for griefing.
As for your name being tied to you... let me give you an example. We had a player on Tarquinas who was a wookiee, named True-Fett I believe. He got reported by a CSR, who made him change his name because it reflected an existing SWG character. So he had them change his name to True-Shot. Well, the next day, he logged in... he still had the same name, but was now a human. (This is also how I know CSRs can change race.
) When they finally got around to changing his name... it basically rerolled his character. Everything got disassociated from him, and later on when he did the hologrind for his Jedi, he actually had to remaster the two professions he'd mastered as True-Fett because the game didn't recognize that he'd mastered them. To this day I think he is the only person to have to master 34 out of 32 professions.
