As for lastnames.. i dont see why or how they could/would be tied to anything.. sounds like more BS told due to lack of real answers. I purposly didnt include a last name for my char with the intent on getting one later.

And the comment about the wookies.. i never thought about that.. very good point.

It's very simple. The reasons it is not readily available:

1. Griefing. Enough said.
2. Some people would change their stuff /all/ the time, which could lead to all kinds of issues.
3. Whether or something /can/ be done, doesn't mean it is a good idea.

So, I don't see it as a BS answer, it's the simple fact they made a /decision/ and are sticking by it.

If it is a technical problem and would take a lot of dev time to fix, then it is understandable.

However, if it's an issue of griefing - well, many (if not most) games allow you to pick and change a last name after you've been in the world for a while. I know that those games have griefing problems, but not so very many that they've had to turn off the last name feature.

There are a lot of features in the game that are far more "griefable" than a name change (/findfriend comes to mind).

For example, the fact that you can still get banktipped by someone you've ignored. >.< I've been harassed with that before. Nothing like someone writing a banktip macro with your name in it and spamming it repeatedly. I was flooded with over a hundred emails in less than a minute.

you can change your name when you change servers because you don't own anything on the new server. no houses, no items, no money, zip. it's like you're a brand new outof the box character on that server, you have your undies, your skills (i'm not sure if you keep your badges even)and hopefully friends on that server that will give you clothing, a house, maybe some cash. you get the idea.

Actually, in EQ they do allow last name changes and is very common when a player marries. It is a simple procedure and the same Devs who work for SOE work on both games. The first name is the important name not the second.

Gloria, Lowca: Wanderhome & Test Center
9 accounts, 18 characters, ok this is a tad nutso
Lowca, LIBERTYLAND PARK on Rori: PIRATES COVE on Test, Dantooine: SMUGGLER'S COVE on Wanderhome, Rori, our fun city geared to role playing fun
take the shuttle, racetrack, Wildlife museum, Romance Inn, pub, cafe,

1. This isn't EQ. Lucas Arts might have a say in this, which is one of the things that makes this a different game from EQ or the others out there.

2. Yes, they /can/ do it. It's that they have chosen /not/ to do so at this time. SOE has never said they can't, they've just said they don't.

3. It's a decision they've made, for whatever reason. They could change their minds. After all, there is an entertainer revamp coming. It's possible they might release it then or they might not.

The debate on this topic is old, and really, there are way better things to argue about than names.

Simple answer: They do not want to implement this change. At this time.

Didn't realize we were arguing? Somehow it was a nice conversation till a little attitude made it into your post...reason for that? Discussion never hurt anyone that I am aware of.

I didn't say we were arguing. I was joking, which is why I put the smily emote next to that sentence. It's not an argument, just a back and forth discussion which is actually quite pointless, when some people keep going over the same things again and again about the topic.

The conversation has been pleasant and I was attempting a light hearted tone with my last post. Again, that's why I threw a smiley on it. Like this one:

This keeps getting rehashed and people keep saying "But why....". So, I just said why. That's all.

Hazards of the written word. One cannot judge tone nor intent. I have a very dry sense of humor, which might not be apparent unless you are used to talking to me or reading my posts.

So..my joke..you perceived and assumed attitude, where none was. So, if you didn't see the smiley or intent of my joke, my apolgies. I will make sure to be more clear when I am teasing.

I've found this conversation very enlightening. Especially with all the ppl who say that it will never happen or basically its been written in stone. That might be, but its also been said about a few things in the past that are ingame now or will be shortly. Kinda like they said we'd never get to go to a homeworld of any of the playable characters... well damn i guess kashyyk is just a vacation spot for the carpet walkers.

Never isnt a very lasting/infinite word in programming terms, especially when 100's maybe thousands of ppl want something...

i think it would be very easy is they implimented a serial number sort of system where it wasnt the character name, but the serial number that a character is given, which would be at work in the background. it could be tied to the serial number you input during the product registration the first time, or random numbers could be assigned by SOE as soon as you create a character on a server.

this way, you COULD change character name completely, but it would be traceable by the devs, and that way griefers wouldn't escape the consequences of their behaviors. they could just follow the serial number. of course, the major griefers in game have ways around that too. they buy game cards and dont use credit cards. so if that account gets banned, they just open up a new one with a game card and start playing again. there are many, many ways around the current systems, so its not like a name change service would make it any easier for griefers.

me, i would love to change my name because when i started playing (a week after launch because i was away on vacation) someone had already taken my first name. as far as i know, that person no longer exists as i cannot add them to my friend's list (ie, that name does not exist.) and i can use that name on other servers, so its not like its an unaccetable name or a copy-cat name from the canon character or EU characters of Star Wars.

You are correct. As I've said, /currently/ it won't happen. That could change at any moment, just like everything else about this game. There's an Entertainer revamp and they might launch it then, if at all. My opinion is if they don't put it in the game during the Entertainer revamp, they most likely won't do it at all.

Again..just my opinion. They just might not want the headache or rolling it out.

Not implementing it now may also have to do with the fact that they still have a fair number of bugs from the CU to fix, and adding a name-changing service may cause more. And even if it doesn't, there are going to be people who can't follow instructions and screw up the whole process and do it over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.

I do like your idea, I only see a couple things I want to comment on. When creating a new account a Credit Card is required to open the account. Its SOE's way of making sure the user who creates the account is in fact at least 18 years old. After that, you don't have to worry about using your Credit card and can just buy gamecards.

Also, even though this will stop major grievers, one time offenders won't be harmed by this. So someone could easily rip off someone without worry, or do stupid things to hinder our fun and then change their name get away with it, no one in the community will know its them, only the devs if they track their serial number. After that, they could stop grieving people and leave it at that.

I would like however to see a feature implemented that would allow one party in a marriage to take on the last name of the other. And in case a divorce happens, have the right to change it back to the original if they choose. But only in that case. *shrugs* Just something I like seen done but I'm not holding my breath.
