Thread: Feats: a future ID proposal

No, I'm not suggesting that you can change peoples' feet.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Despite ID being well and good as an 'extra' profession (one that is not neccessarily required in theflow of the game), I've had an idea recently that would probably please a lot of players and IDs. Players who go to IDs would have a special venue to gain their characters abilities: feats.

In games such as Neverwinter Nights, the player gets to choose special'feats' that can manipulate certain situations better for them. Some increase skill mods, others give extra abilities. If feats were added into SWG as a set of abilities that can be manipulated by IDs, this would create more variance, specialization, and interest in the game.

For example, lets say my pistoleer, Beel Ze'bub, plans to go fight some Imperial oppression, but he doesn't like the TEFs it gives him. He could go to an ID and obtain the Slippery Personality feat, which reduces TEF time by 50%. This feat could be temporary or could last with him until he gets it changed. Or perhaps he is getting beaten up while exploring. The Uncanny Alertness feat would make him invulnerable to the first attack that any aggroing NPC or PC that tries to hit him. The possibilities are endless, and could be quite interesting.

I would suggest that the available number of feats that a player can have would increase with skills. Perhaps each master box would give Feats+1, or something like that.

Other possibilities for feats are

Exceptional Concentration, which would give a 100% success rate to crafting.

Kleptomaniac, which gives increased loot drops.

Fast Learner, which gives a universal +5% XP bonus

Resilience, which gives +5% resistance to all damage types.

Ambidextrous, which could be a prerequisite toor give a bonus to dual wield...

IDs would feel more a part of the gaming flow since their actions directly affect people's abilities in the game. They would have a recurring customer base with people who like to change Feats often, or for those who use temporary feats. They would also have a need for such buildings as the 'spa' or 'salon', which could enhance or provide extra Feats. The more feats that are added the more variance there is to be had and the more interest day-to-day life gives.

Has this been proposed yet? I looked and never saw it.

Very cool idea, thank you for taking the time to write this up. D&D (like in Neverwinter Nights) feats are a lot of fun while not being overpowering What dothe other ID's think?

You can call them feats, but what your really asking for is to turn IDers into walking/talking BUFFer terminals. Sorry, but no thanks. and yes BUFFs has been proposed and voted on. most IDers to not want to become Buffers.

Sorry if i'm a little short, it's been a long day.

P.S. I always like to hear new ideas so please feel free share any other you may have.

it wouldn't really be buffing. it would be more like changing a setting of your character. different feats would not neccessarily buff your character, but modify your character for a long period of time. isn't that what IDs are all about, modifying character settings?

I wouldn't necessarily say that ID'ers do not want to buff. There have certainly been specific buffing type ideas that were not popular Our buffing bubble was definitely popped when Chefs got a lot of the buffing ideas we had been tossing around over the months

"My word, George, that just might work!"

Anyone who's read my posts knows just how cynical I am over anything other than expanded content for ID's. This idea, though.... it... it's GREAT!

THINKabout it! It doesn't have to be to powerful, it just has to work. Maybe we could even put in a penalty/benefit system. An ID can make your accuracy better, but maybe your speed is lower?

Of course, we don't want people using this for greifing. A TEF-time-lowering would be nice, but it'd be on a timer. AKA... I want to get my 'feat' changed from an accuracy boost to a TEF resist, so the Image Designer changes it for me...

But WAIT! It takes one hour for this 'feat' to set in. Yes, one hour and any TEF you have should be gone anyway, and you can't get it changed again till that first hour is up!

A final thing... I've got a better name for it. Ladies and Gents... Mr. BZebub has just outlined our Tatoo boosts perfectly.

Voor, no offense, but I would appreciate it if you didn't speak on my behalf. I personally wouldn't mind having some sort of buff ability, and I think this proposal is a great idea. It gives us something new, adds to our desirability, and would diminish our reputation as a "girly" profession. I love it!

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away I used to play GURPS, which had an advantage/disadvantage system that worked something like you describe. Loved that extra little bit of customizability that they allow, but I also liked the balance that the disadvantages provided. Since we're talking about "permanent" changes we either need a 0-sum like some RPG systems use (for each "point" of advantages you need a "point" of disadvantages) or the advantages would have to have inherent disadvantages. But all in all, I like the idea. (I also like the suggestion that these be tattoo-based…that's very cool )

(Edit because I haven't finished my coffee yet and therefor can't spell)

Most of the universe's problems can be solved by the application of a brick to the side of the right head.
The problem is if you don't have a big enough brick or can't find the right head. The devil is in the details.

I think that the main difference between feats and buffing is that buffing only lasts for a short period of time. I really don't like the idea of buffing because it means that powergamers who want that extra "edge" will want us to constantly be buffing them and I won't get to do any of the stuff I really like in image design. I think this idea is more like stat migration, though. It is permanent, or semi-permanent and people would use it to fine-tune their characters. It wouldn't be something we would do all the time.

Badass idea, yet, it should only work in ID building.

well, i'm glad you guys like it

now a question: should all feats (or whatever we shall call them) give an advantage and a disadvantage, or should they provide only an advantage? If we hinder them too much, they will be completely useless.

If they provide ONLY an advantage, we'll get more money for them.. LOL Look at Vasarian Brandy vs. Muon Gold. Granted, I don't know the difference in resources involved, but it seems to me that 250k for a crate of brandy is just a little outrageous. However, that's neither here nor there. As I was saying, we'll be able to charge more if they provide just an advantage... but there's less chance of them being used for griefing purposes if there IS a drawback.

So, to sum up, I really don't know.
