Thread: We should be able to change the race of toons :p

Yeah yeah let's change the races that way IDs are hunted down so people can take advantage of any species.
I'll be human today so I can be a 14point artisan and run out all my schems, then be Ith tomorrow so I can get the extra exper on my ship parts

Games change an evolve sometimes,
the fact some people are 'stuck' because of the 'old' jedi system is not really that much of a complaint,
everyone was perfectly fine with it until the new system was in place.

with asking for species changes how many will cry and moan when they cant wear the original owned items if it comes in..
But I want to wear my Maruader Armor..my mods are in my Twik's lekku wrap....what do you mean wookiees can't wear boots?

In most MMORPGs, people would say they didn't want others to be able to change their skills for the same reasons that are being given here... in SWG though, we are allowed to change our toon to our own playstyle preference at any time. You don't have to reroll in SWG just because you now want to play a Healer instead of a Melee Tank. Why should species be any different?

As far as immersion goes, I just don't get that at all. It's not like our Avs are born into this world as babies and we watch them grow old and die. No. I want a new toon, ok, poof, new full grown adult in the world. I want to reroll but get the same name on another species. Ok, poof, now I'll join the same guild, everyone will talk to me the same, and call me by the same name. *shrug*

It's all role play. The level of immersion that would need to be in the game for this to mess it up any simply isn't there. We ID through a UI window for goodness sake. It's not like we have animations and 3D objects for doing hair and doing surgery - it's all role play. Anyone who says this is something different is putting some kind of personal limitation on believability.

Personally, I only play Twi's and I only want to play Twi's tyvm, but one thing that could be a cool future addition if species changes were ever allowed might be race blends. I know tons of players that claim to be half one race and half another - being able to pull ID features from two different species could be a huge RP tool for this type of backstory!

... and that's really the thing here people, ID supports planned RP... which is totally different than actual game mechanic world immersion.

nice post, I totally agree how you express the immersion process it's all about RP.

For thoses who disagree here some examples :

  • weclone in 10 secs and are revived with full memory, skills...

  • a novice pistol does 20 time less damage than a master one

  • we have 80 items in our pockets and we carry tons of resources

etc, etc...

The above three examples are in the game for a their own reasons that arenot realted to why I'm adamantly opposed to species change ability. The first keeps the game moving along, it would be no fun at all if you had to restart your skills upon each death. The second is to give incentive to become a Master Weaponsmith and create a need to keep mining/crafting/move the economy along. The third also keeps us from having to do the tedius chore of running back to our house every few mintues to get stuff. Yes, this is a bit unrealistic, but it's one of those things that helps keep the game moving along and flexible. They are a sensible sacrifice of realism and roleplay in favor of game playability.

I do not see species change in the same light. It could lead to a SOTM culture (species of the month) on the part of the combat folks that thisweek belive Ithorians are all the rage for being Bounty Hunters. This could detract from the diversity within the game and hurt the atmosphere of a galactic spanning government with multiple races etc. I think that our immersion is already delicate enough as it is, I'd rather not messwith it furthur. Also, adding such a mechanic does not help the game from a practical sense either. People can already get second slots on the same server so they may as well use that for the race they would decide to be now. The old system unlockers could perhaps be grandfathered in some way, but they don't have to be. They're not absolutly guaranteed everything they could ever want just as anyone else is not. It's about choice, and it was those folks choice to pick their race, grind their jedi, etc. Some choices have permanant consequences in the game, and this is one of them.

I think the SotM (Species of the Month)-syndrome is a very important argument, why species-changes, even only once per month, is not a good idea. My fear is, that it the majority of players would start setting the "best" species for their template... so the majority of Artisans would be human thanks to the experimentation-bonus, most Shipwrights would probably ithorian or sollustan, because of their boni, most combat folks might be wookiees, humans or zabrak (I'm have no clue which species got the most health or "best" boni there...

In short: it would probably hurt the diversity of SWG.

I heartily disagree with this concept.

I mean come on now, if someone wasn't cool enough to pick Bothan from the start, they'll never be cool enough to play a Bothan even if an ID changes them.

Wait, what? There are other races people would change to?

/mood confused

This would be implemented just so all the non-Bothan whiners would be able to switch over, right?
