Thread: Still a bit hazy on why no name change/lastname..etc

But only in that case. *shrugs* Just something I like seen done but I'm not holding my breath.
I'm not against the name changes, even if people see that in my previous responses on the topic. I just don't think that it should be forced on an Image Designer. Anything that is going to get the player base to swamp me with something I don't want to do (such as stat migrations, *grin*), I'll just have to speak out on.
Hmmm...wait. I can charge 100k for a name change, like I charged 100k for a stat migration. People would hate it, no one would pay it..and I'd be left in peace. Okay, never mind. Bring it on. Never know, some player might pay 100k for it.

*gasp* Have you been listening in on my ID sessions? And I only need one firespray. /wink
my suggestion above was hypothetical to a possible system that CSRs could use, not EVER to be given to the player base.
I've been developing medical software for the past 10 years now. (see myhealthfolders.com for most recent project).
I am a CNE 3 and 4, MCSE NT4 and 2000, MCDBA 2000, A+ and Network+ certified.
I can tell you that I am 1000000% certain you are NOT identified by your name in the database (they use Oracle at SOE) for anything. Oracle like other relational databases such as MS SQL and even MS Access use indexes and other methods to RELATE one table of data to another. When you create your character it is given a unique CHARACTERID in one of the Oracle tables.
To see what I'm talking about go to the "C:\Program Files\StarWarsGalaxies\profiles\YourCharacterNameHere" folder. There should be a file that ends with ".ca". It will have a large integer value followed by ".ca"
That number is most likely your identity in Oracle... NOT your name.
There is absolutely NO TECHNICAL reason why this can't be done. It would take like 30 minutes to pound out the C++ to make it happen.
Now, SHOULD it be done? I don't know. Changing your name opens up a lot of griefing opportunities. The guidlines for this in terms of game policy would be a million times more complicated than any technical issue.
