Thread: Do we really want droids?

Maybe its just me, but I dont see how the arguement of "Doctors have droids, we should too" really applies to IDs.I mean, Doctors have droids, in my opinion,to increase their mobility and purposein the combat world. I can't see buffing being the only reason they gave them droids, but just more of a main result from it. But if you're in the middle of nowhere fighting, I'm sure its convinient for a doctor to be able to pull out a droid there and heal you, or buff you in a PvP or PvEadventure. When's the last time it was logical for someone to get a change of hairstyle mid-combat?

"Ah man, these rancors totally messed up my hair. Could you give me that spikey style instead? Oh, and give me albino white skin while you're at it. That'll blind them!"

Hehe

Sure, not everything in the game has to do with combat. That's why we all did ID, for something other than just combat. It's a social thing. I'm sure there is someone in the middle of nowhere on Lok pining for an eye color changewho doesn't want to wait the 1 minute timer or so. But I'm sure they will suffice. Besides, we are under the "Entertainer" tree, not the "Medic" tree. Dancers/Musicians have their cantinas, we have our tents. At least we have tents. I was pretty darn excited, being an ID, when they added tents just for us. I think droids for us are a bit of a stretch, but thats just my opinion. I just dont see the galaxy spontaneously combusting without them added. We can still do cosmetic changes out of tent. I do them all the time. The out of tent timer isn't that bad. On that basis, the only real purpose for a droid would be to allow the ability to migrate stats out of the tent, which would have more reprocussions than it's worth. But since we are entertainers, technically, maybe if we had a decreased overall timer in cantinas or something. Not as good as in the tent, but still better than being outside. Though I think Player City tents could add a cool perspective on roleplaying salons and stuff.

Hmm..I dunno though. If droids actually do come out, I'm not sure if I'd buy one, or whether I'd give in. I'm just afraid they'd give me an excuse never to go to a NPC tent at all, as they'd give that excuse to every ID, and then the poor tents would be empty and lonley.

Actually, player city med centers are empty, too. And if people are healing in houses, guild halls, and camps, they're not healing the general public. Med centers, player city or no, are empty because of the mobility given to doctors by droids. And by the fact that no one wants to see the same inside walls of a single building forever.

I agree, which is why I think it should be an all or none thing. If we say no to anything but player city tents, then we are excluding players who don't want to live in player cities. If we say no to anything but generic ID tents that don't have to be in a player city, then we are still excluding anyone who cannot spare the lots. If we say no to any option other than droid modules, we will be excluding players who don't have enough dataspace to add in another droid. Unless we are going to provide all the options for all the different types of gameplay (as other professions already have), then we shouldn't do it at all.

I would be perfectly fine if doctors & their droids would only work in a hospital. & I would be fine if dancers & musicians could only perform in cantinas & theaters. & I would be fine if ID's could only domigrations in an NPC structure too, butI would want it changed to something other than those tents. I have never liked them & never will. I don't like how they were implemented without considering how ID's preferred to play the game. They could have linked the same functions to existing NPC cantinas in the back rooms etc where at least we wouldn't be bored to death while waiting for customers.

I'm willing to do a makeover at any time. I want people to come to me for a makeover. I don't want to get grief because I don't feel like trekking across a planet or two to do a stat migration.

I would like to have a droid. It would be nice to be able to ask people to travel to me rather than have both of us run to Coronet and the tent.

I am all for droids. I don't have any problems telling people I won't do stat migrations even when I am flying my Master Image Designer title and standing alone with no one around in the tent. I just tell them I don't do stat migrations, sorry but that's how it is.

And I'd love to have no timers out in the field when I wanted to do ID work, it would make me a much happier ID. Player city structures are a non-option for me for a couple reasons: 1) I don't want to be tied to a player city and 2) I don't have the lots anyway even if I lived in one.

Here's an idea... what if the droids or player terminals etc. did allow migrations, BUT, in the same way they used to be - it will take several days to take effect, & no timer for the player or MID during the session.

This still allows novices the ten minute method to gain xp & keep them in the tents where the players who want fast migrations can find them. And, itgives MID's all the options without the hassle of the ten minute timer for players who are also willing to wait a few days for their migration change.

I much preferred the atmosphere of SWG pre-droids. At least certain modules. The crafting droids I am all for. FX droids - yay fun. But the med centers are now completely vacant - that was a huge blow to the roleplaying aspect of the game IMHO, and the devs obviously realize that as well since they never allowed musicians to have droids which allow them to heal out of cantinas. I think the same would go for IDs if they never had to sit in a tent. Another RP aspect down the drain.

SWG originally had one aspect that really drew me to it more than any other MMORPG - and that was the complete immersion in the world of Star Wars. Whether you are a hardcore RPer or not, it was hard to ignore how much you felt like you were in the SW world when this game was released. From Cantina to Med Center it was an all-around complete gaming experience. Player cities, houses, etc... they have all helped add to the game. However, certain droid modules, allowing recursive macros to remain in as long as they have, a completely UNMYSTERIOUS path to jedi (man was that a let-down!)... these have all reminded me of aspects of other MMORPGs that have gone down the toilet. Buff bots? Come on! Afk musicians? PUH-LEASE! If you aren't outraged about that one you never experienced pre-afk musicians.

Holy rambling... I guess I feel stronger about this than I thought.

Oh My Gosh!!! I would love to have an ID droid. Ireally dislike having to go to a tent everytime someone wants a stat migration. Those tents tend to get alittle stuffy when you get trapped in there. Also, it would be awesome if player citys could have their own tent.

If you don't like going to Salons for stat migrations then just don't go. When I get a tell asking for one I just say "I'm busy at the moment, If you check the salon then there should be someone there", then continue with what I was doing. I'm usually down at the Salon everyday, though recently I've had to sort guild matters out. It's the enviroment of the salons between ID's that I'd miss if I had a droid. I can't stand the things, They steal our jobs(ticket collector, I always give it a punch when I see it), destroy age old traditional centres such as medi centres, and really seem to get under everyones nose not knowing what to do.

I would have to say i'm for it. I'm both a MID and a Master Musician and i run my own cantina. Having a droid handy to take care of stats migrations (Wich i get several requests a day) would save me a lot of stress and travel. I would prefer to stay in my cantina to do this sort of work.

I'm definitely for droids too. I want my pink MID droideka! I think droids are the most versatile option. Player City Salons won't be very useful to anyone who doesn't spend most of her or his life involved with the particular community centered around that player city. However...

With a droid you can transform your home, wherever it is, to a Salon of your own design. Yay!

As someone posted above, the percieved pros and cons about droids that are under debate have more to do with playstyle than anything else. Some of us live active lives that takes us to all the corners of the galaxy. Some of us hang out in the same places all the time. Some of us live in player cities and are very involved with our guilds. Some of us prefer to live alone and happily interact with people outside our guilds, if we are even guilded at all.

It is impossible to find a solution that pleases everybody. That said, saying no to an option that would benefit many MIDs just because it conflicts with your own preferred playstyle is not very generous. And I think the fears many have expressed about Salons becoming obsolete are unwarranted.

Salons will still be great meeting places, both for grinders, customers and those who just feel like socialising for a bit. They are known landmarks now. And, face it, we are only talking about 3 Salons here. I have yet to see a single customer wait for an ID to show up in Vreni Island or Moenia. So the Salons that matter are those located near the starports in the 3 busiest towns. I dare say they will always be busy as long as those towns are busy.

Salons are definitely not the only way to find MIDs... Most stat migrators that ask me for my services find me using the search option. Frequently I get tells whenever I linger near a Starport for too long. Only after the tell do I go to the Salon (and tell my customer to do likewise). Once I'm there I might get caught up by requests and get stuck doing a few more, ok, that happens. But the point remains.. it is the tag you wear that is important. Not the tent you're in.

Go droids!
