Thread: Creativity Does not Equal Money

As an artist and a business owner in real life, I am flabbergasted at the comments of some Image designers whining that their profession does not make enough money. The point of creativity is to enhance the visual landscape and provide a common thread between people. It is nothing more or less than a tool to bring people of different backgrounds together to identify with something unique within themselves. You are not here to make money with your profession, but as some artists will make money, so will you. Do not expect that the world will suddenly realize the importance of art, because they haven't yet and they won't. Your oppotunity is in the connections you make. Like no other profession you have the opportunity to get to know someone you might not have ever met. That relationship can be used in many ways. One of which is to make hundreds of thousands of credits matching folks with needs to those who can supply. This could be for relationships, for goods, for services, just about anything. This happens every day. It is called business. Your talents as a Master ID are interesting, now use them to accomplish something tangible.
I expect this thread will earn me lots of flames for three reasons.
1. there are a lot of non adults playing this game
2. there are alot of non artist ID's
3. there are alot of folks who don't understand business.
If you do not understand my post, feel free to flame me.
gnometoes, i doubt very seriously that you will ever look at this thread again...but just in case you do, i have to reply to the drivel that you posted.
noone whines that they dont make money in this profession. we whine that the tools we use to commit changes are archaic, cryptic, and buggy. we argue that there is no secure way for us to sell service, it isnt that we cant/dont make money, its that we do changes with the agreement that someone will pay and they run off 7 out of 10 times. what would you do in that "business" of yours if someone walked in, picked up 3 or 4 things, and turned to you and said "cya...i need these" and just walked out the front door?
as for you being an artist, what exactly do you do as an artist? do you paint scenes and give them away for free? if so, you might be the person responsible for the trashy flea market art you can get for a "dime-a-dozen" price. maybe you run a vinyl cutter at a carnival, and make those stupid calvin peeing on ______ stickers, yeah thats art...
do you get free haircuts? try the walmart hair place one or two times...sure its cheap, but there isnt much you can do to fix the mess they usually make.
what we do as image designers could hardly be considered art. its more about realizing what looks good under different circumstances, how to apply things to look as good as possible. the day we become artists is when we get scratchpads to make tatoos with pencil and pen tools (never gonna happen i know)...until they, its more like picking items from a clipart catalog.
why do we charge for that? because it really gets boring listening to some 13 year old twerp rambling on and on wanting to see all the "cool hairstyles", cussing at us because something did not work as expected, and finally settling on what he had before we started.
you want an image design change? pay for it. you want a stat migration? pay for it. i know more than one person on my server, personally, who has over 135 million credits in this game. as a master tailor, master artisan, and master image designer...i struggle to keep myself over 100-200k.
how much money do you have in game? can you not afford 10-15k for a stat migration? dont want to pay high prices for green hair, or holo-emotes? fine then...do without it all...its not a necessity anyway.
