Even if you cant use a barker droid without advertising IV surely you could just rename a droid. Might not be quite as effective or noticeable but I'm sure some people would see it...
I'm not an ID myself but I certainly agree that both IDs and the customers need to have better channels of comunication

I've had good results from renaming droids... and creature pets as well. The most uniques advertisement I have seen (and the one that I found most appealing as a CUSTOMER) was a trio of named birds flying around a starport (of course that meant that they were owned by a master CH, but even one such bird would be cool). A specially named droid or pet is non-intrusive.
You can't ignore the droidsas you can the player character spammers... and my auto-responce to spam is to /addignore the spammer... and NOT buy from them or use their services. As a customer, I HATE those barker droids. So... as a service provider, I would NEVER use one.

and what would be the point of an ID to have Advert IV other than for a barker droid ... unless they have a support crafting profession as well ... or a support combat profession for loot gathering ... i mean, really ... there are so many issues with ID ... not to mention several other professions. they just arent getting the non-combat issues solved fast enough. i know they are "working on it" but technically they are working on the combat crap first .. they just gave them a full on jedi addition, a completely new space upgrade, a group system overhaul ... just give us a way to let our customers know we are in the salon or give us a "imaging terminal" to place in our houses. That way there will be no "sorry busy at the shop right now, cant come meet you" they could just come to me.

Okay I feel like a n00b but here goes. Is there *any* way to rename your droid without teaching it 3 commands with its name? And can you put spaces in the name of the droid?

you can use - but no spaces and no other "symbols" ... just letters ... no numbers. and i believe the character limit is either 20 or 15 ... i dont remember now, its been almost a year since i dove into the "how the HE!! do i program this stupid thing" mode. LOL
example
teach the following and then just ctrl+up arrow for each
type: Im-The-Best-ID s
then train for "store" and hit enter
hit ctrl+up arrow
train for "group" and hit enter
hit ctrl+up arrow
train for "get patrol points" and hit enter
the droids name should be changed now. if it hasnt changed, then there are A) Too many letters and dashes in the name. B) The name was not acceptable by the filter. C) You used unacceptable characters (numbers or symbols) in the name. D) You totally flubbed it somehow LOL.
To be sure you are doing it correctly, try using a simple name first such as Bob. If you want to test how many letters you can use, then repeat all the above steps using IIIIVIIIIVIIIIVIIIIV ... blah blah for 20 characters. Four capital "i's" and then a capital V to represent multiples of 5. just keep removing/adding characters until you find one that works/doestn work.
once you have your droid named, then just go in and reteach the droid its actual command. if you use st for store, then just train for "store" and type st enter. simple

Oh I agree. Sitting in the tent waiting for someone to come along is dreadfully boring.
I tend to stick to thesalon in Bestine, so I run around town a few times with my Master ID tag on, usually made up in some wild colors and outfits, holoemoting like a fiend. Then I go sit in the tent. If I make it that far. I usually get one or two tells before I get done with my circuit around town.
Today, I needed a stat mig, so I did the traditional search. Only ID near me was a master. Sent her a mail asking for an appointment, and she was there in less than 5 minutes. I was so tickled Ipaid her 25k. But most people don't like to bother with the search feature it seems.
I have Ad 4 on two chars, but rarely use my barker droid. I park him out front of our city shuttleport and have himsay, "Welcome to Serenity Valley! Enjoy your shopping!" But for my other chars that don't have merchant at all, I do like Maisland said. Use a named droid or pet to advertise your name and location. Set it on patrol. It works.

Actually, you need to teach the droid/pet 4 commands, not 3. I use the same method to name my pets/droids as LaurnaRose myself.
You can use ' as well as - in the name. Another method is to use capitol letters to indicate seperate words thus: AnExample.
P.S. As for where all the customers are... my experiences over the lastcouple weekshas led me to believe that they are all in the Coronet Cantina spamming for an ID.

I was in Theed (Eclipse) this weekend (Friday to Sunday) and I was swamped with customers wanting everything from a new hair do,complete overhaulsor migrations.
Friday and Saturday I ID'ed as many as possible and still they kept coming (or left because of the wait - I sent a polite /tell when they were next and most returned).
I am currently on the way to master dancer so I wanted to spend my Sunday training. Still, I got tells from people who wanted ID work (yes, Ihad my MID title up). So, it got to the point where I charged 50K a migration and people happily paid. Well, I thoughtwhen they wish to pay me that kind of credits, dancing can wait I didn't have one single rude customer the entire weekend and some even stayed around just for the fun of it.
It was a good good weekend

It might be time to bring up the ID droid module or player ID terminal ideas again... I'd rather have either of those before a barker droid.

What I wish, is that I could have ID clients and not all stat migration clients. I do run around with my tag on, so people can find me. Many do, especially if I'm running through Theed or Coronet. People actually chase me down. I keep a pricelist in my email and I have an /afk up as I do my thing. The only people who ever complain are the leet-tard a$$hats who are rude. I don't mind negotiating, but if someone's a jerk, they'll get a hard fast pricelist. Yes, the prices might seem steep, but it's the market of Gorath. We simply don't have many IDs around. Half the population is from Europe and the rest North America so we're pretty spread out. And again...I will modify my prices for anyone who simply says "Please?". Not plz or pls, but Please. 
By using the AFK tag, it also helps me find the "real" customers vs the stat migration leet-tards.

If you are looking for my services, most likely you have encountered me while I'm currently busy. These prices include my time/effort/expense in traveling to your location and/or changing my current plans.
Base prices, but they're negotiable if you are nice. Be a jerk and they double:
1k for one simply change if you know what you want. (hair, eye color, body, holo etc).
5k for mulitple changes if you know what you want.
10k for one change if you have to go through all palettes
50k for multiple changes if we go through all the palettes and items
Non-negotiable price:
100k for Stat Migration. All stat migrations do include free makeover services, since it takes four minutes to run the stat migration.
If you do not like my prices nor my terms, feel free to visit another Image Designer. It's a free market and I'm tired of the harassment. You can chose to hire me or not.

ive posted this before but ... they really need to give us an ID mission terminal so we can have some way of making money even if it is minimal while waiting for customers.
especially for the ones who are leveling and basically are stuck in the salon.
and there needs to be more emphasis on the search functions for new players. i agree that we need to to have the /register command available to us as well ... but honestly ppl ... if anyone wanted to take the time to find an id all they would hve to do is do a search for Image Designer/Any and as long as you have your tag on ... OMG what do you know, there is an ID ... /t ID are you busy?
