I've had someone ask for that only once. The person was nearby, was asked if it was ok and they were flattered. I personally wouldn't want someone trying to look exactly like me, but I have a fairly unique face and look I think. If I had that last haircut all the girls wear in brown I could hardly complain
If you feel awkward about it, and I assume you do or you wouldn't have asked us, I would suggest maybe saying you have a policy of the person asking the one to be copied if they're ok with it and having them send you a tell/email.

Well... the reason I asked is because I did have this happen recently. But I was the one being copied, rather than the one making the clone... it was on my Twi'lek dancer.
To be honest, it disturbed me. Apparently this girl asked a close friend of mine, who's also a MID, to make her look like me. My friend sent me a tell about it, I said no, I don't want someone who looks exactly like me. So my friend refused. The next day I discovered that she'd found SOMEONE to do it. It made me feel kind of violated.
I didn't handle the situation very well, I'm afraid. I'd had a bad day to begin with, and this just sort of put me over the edge. While I can appreciate the compliment, my look is my own, and I don't want anyone else looking exactly like me. I lose my uniqueness when that happens.
She did email me later to say she had changed her look.
As an ID, I've only had this request once, and the person being cloned was flattered. However, I didn't realize until recently that this is such a touchy issue. Like Syz said, it's a matter of intellectual property. I designed my own look. Obviously there are going to be people who resemble me, but for someone to want to specifically look JUST like me?
Ugh. I don't like it.

Yes, it's a very touchy issue and I think the responses here tell that alot of us are ready to handle such a situation with the needed care. As FushiaD's example shows such requests should only be done in consence with the both participants. As ID I get alot of requests like 'Make me look beautifull, too', but I never had a request to duplicate someones look completely, yet.
I can imagine some guilds might try to roleplay a remnant of the old clone-army of the old republic and thus want to match their avatars as closely as possible, but I think they would have their own MID to take care of that.
If asked about it, I wouldn't do it without the affirmation of the players who's avatar is requested to be cloned or copied.
FushiaD has shown us, that there are actually three side with this deal and that all sides should agree on it.

I have had my share of clones. After the third or fourth time I just started laughing it off.

I did this the other day. The character being copied was in the salon along with the character I was working on. I'm fairly sure they were doing it for roleplaying purposes. I just matched the features I could and they really seemed to appreciate it. Never had somebody ask to copy somebody not present with them though!

I have them bring the other player in and I take screen shots of that characters settings and then either jump in and out of the game to refer to the settings or I print them. I get a lot of requests for that.
The hard ones are the people who look at a website and want to look just like the character in the pic or want to look like one of the SW characters (Luke, Darthmaul, Hans).... features and all!
Personally, I don't mind making a clone of another player, but I won't do it without getting those screenshots first. This means that everyone involved needs to be in agreement.
I can understand why you felt violated. I'm glad it worked out though. At least someone appreciates your artistic talents, though.

I've actually never had this request in all my time IDing.
I've gotten requests to look like certain characters from starwars or other things, but never to look like another player.

think it really depends on who it is and why its happening? like for example I made 2 guys look alike.. they wanted to be twins lol .. that was funny. Then there was the person who gave me specific directions about what they wanted to look like.. then at the end told me that he was copying his friend's toon. At that point I told him that he really should get his permission and talked him into a color that actually looked better anyways. But the truth is that we are just the designers... if a person pays us for a service then we should comply as much as posible. Thats just the way i look at it.
