I bet there are some very creative players who could use these to good effect when performing a play, rallying the troops, or roleplaying a mute character but I can see why some people might not like the idea of these holo-emotes.

Honestly the first thing that poped into my mind was that emotional shorthand used in certain anime style cartoons for young kids. You know, the little kid throws his ball, the creature does not come out, and a big giant tear appears over his head to express his sadness/embarassment.

This isan excellentdescriptionof how Holo emotes could be used. They aresingle useand only exist for a brief moment.

Keep in mind, this is a new use of the technology and to a certain extent, we had to go "over the top" to see what kind of effect they have. As with most new things put into the game, this is just the beginning. From here, it is onward and upward.

is it me or does this tent seem like its in the middle of nowhere? perhaps maybe we can place it anywhere we want.

It is in the middle of the desert becausethat isa genericdesign/build environment. The ID tentsare not placed in player cities, but have been added to static cities. The live Image Designer tents are located in Theed, Moenia, Coronet, Bestine and Vreni Island.

What are the holo-emotes for?

They are just short little "expressions" that appear for a brief time over the players heads. In the future we will be able to add more types and images.

Sir_Voor wrote:
On a constructive note; I think the skull Holo-Emotes would look much cool if its handle point was moved down so the skull would be around the head. So the skull's eyes are at the same level as the character's eyes.

That was what we wanted to do, but some of the character models at their max head sizes poked through the effect and swallowed up the holo-emote.

Shropt wrote:

I love reading the IDs replies to this thread. Has anyone else noticed that they added TERMINALS for image design. That means you DON'T NEED A PLAYER. Now if you want image design you just go to a terminal. That's a bad thing for ID players.

Image Designers can still do everything wherever they are standing. The tents reduce the time it takes by half and the ID booths are to facilitate stat migration.

Ablon wrote:

I think holo emotes is a fun direction for the player base and I hope to see new facial and hair designs.

We do want to add more tatoos, hairstyles, etc in the future. They can't be done currently because its a huge amount of modelling work. Every hairstyle has to have scalability for all appropriate races and tatoos are even more tricky since they are images that could be applied to any and every possible avatar configuration.

The holo-emotes are an excellent first step to accomplishing many of those goals with new technology.

Burnspotter wrote:

the stuff looks cool, but i have2 concerns.

is there an option to turn it off and how much more lag will this cause?

Its only a couple of seconds. It will cause no lag. It uses a "particle effect" system which is different than the avatar polygons. Of course, if you are in a place with 50+ people there will always be lag.

Wongsiufu wrote:

Nice screenshots.

I hopethat using thenew particle effects onholo emoteare just the first step. Eventually they should put them on other area in the game, likeimproving the combateffects,R2 sending out hologram message, etc. SWG is already one of the best looking gamein graphics department and it is good that the developers are still trying to improve it.

This is correct

Will we still be able to stat migrate the normal, slow way?

Thunderheart, thank you for taking the time to clear up some of these issues. First: you mention that the tents will decrease the time it takes by half and that the booths are tofascilitate stat migration. Reduce what time by half? Fascilitate stat migration how? Also, could you please address the concerns that these emotes are not something the ID community has expressed interest in? Finally, can we get any explanation to why the chain of communication broke down to such a degree that we're only hearing a day or two before the minipublish goes to test about these emotes and about the functionality of the tent?

I actually just checked my own settings on this, since I don't ever remember receiving a newsletter. My email address is entered correctly, and I have the box checked to "receive SWG newsletter". But I have never once received a newsletter. I have had the form filled out for several months.

Can you check into this TH? I think something's broke.

In case TH doesn't get back to this thread, let me briefly touch on the function of the tents (which we'll be able to play with on Test Center later today):

Stat Migration - ID's will be the only way for stat migration to happen, and it will be possible only in a tent. Silly me, I'venever thoughtto ask if it will be instant, we should know soon.

Time cut in half - There will be a new system to get ID experience (this will be tweaked until a casual player takes a month to master ID). There will be a minimum timer for each ID session (and multiple ID changes will be possible at once, yay!). This is very minimal (not sure if the times I was given some time ago are what ended up happening) and will be cut in half if you are a Master ID, and also cut in half if you are inside the tent, for a potential cut of 1/4 of the time if you are a Master in a tent.

Terminals - There will only be one terminal in the tent (our dev made this decision to give us more room in there and to prevent fighting over terminals). We will only have to stand in the tent to "use the terminal", not actually have one per customer/ID pair.

I'll dispense more detail later today (prob tonight)after I've had time to test some.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news LadyLeala, but everything on this end is functioning correctly. Are you using a hotmail type of service? Some types of free email systems screen out the email as part of their anti-spam systems.

To remedy this, we'll have the newsletter archive for you.

It looks like the art department has been very busy and the emotes look very "creative". Can I ask one question though, wasn't the art deparment supposed to be working on fixing the "hat"? Couldn't this have been fixed first. The hat seems to be a much major issue for the community outside of new holographic short term emotes.
