I quite like these holo-emotes. They dont necessarily have to be magic related. I am currently reading a series of scifi books by Alastair Reynolds (Not Starwars related) in which ent-optics are used as fashion accessories. These are holographically projected images often used to display emotion and for forms of non-verbal communication, and also just for show like tatoos or earrings.

The only concern i have is that the holograms in SW have a uniquely rough feel to them, slightly distorted andmonochromatic.

While I like the exterior look of the tents and really excited about the new content for image designers, I have to say these new particle effects look a little over the top. When they were first brought up I had the impression of the hair becoming shiney, or the hologram hearts trailing off the head. Even a ring of many tiny skulls orbiting the head like a halo crown would be a tad humerous but fine. The effects Q Displayed were just plain Goofy to me. The Skull over the person made him seem commical and the bubbles were downright insane.

I am just glad that other matters are being resolved in the patch.

I personally don't get it, but whatever.

Seeing this makes me wonder why the whole e-mail system wasn't replaced with a recorded hologram of the person sending the message.

I think holo-emotes are kinda neat. They'll probably have more use a parties or cantinas than anything else. However, this might not be exactly what the Image Design community was asking for.

My one hope is that you tie this back into starwars by requiring the holo-emoter to use some sort of Image Designer crafted tool (i.e. a holo-projector) to create the emote.

One more thing. How about some facial hair for us bothans?

* First of all the Star Wars films are the one thing 99% of the players have in common. This is a STAR WARS game so it should follow the first 3 films. Do a poll on why people are playing this particular game and the Star Wars movies will come out top.

* It's not hard to see what has a Star Wars feel and what doesn't just using the three films as a basis. Composite Armour looks just as Star Warsy as Ubese armour even though it wasn't in the film. Bloody floating skulls and cats do not. END OF

* This is not about using your imagination. I don't want to see a bloody de Lorean driving around and have to imagine that it somehow got warped here from an alternative Speilberg universe!

* The best hologram in the movies was the Death Star in ROTJ. Now I don't care what you say...If the Mon Calamari and the Rebels can't afford the best possible Hologram for there most important mission, then they should have lost the war! There is no way in the world that something better looking than that Death Star should be able to float above your head, with or without a device. (And yes, I think the dancer/musician effects are out of place too.)

* ID's do need extra stuff. They have been continually mentioned in this thread. More Tattoos, Haircuts, Scars etc. I'm not saying that you haven't done this, just that they are cool, and emoticons are not.

* You added lots of Storm Troopers and Droids to the game in the Imperial Crackdown and Droids Rebuilt publishes. This was excellent. It was a great buz to walk out of a cantina and see a probe bot whize past and Storm Troopers stopping people. Thats what the game needed and it was welcomed by most. This on the otherhand is not.

* If you really feel this is needed, then have a projector device and make the holos blue and fuzzy. Also have a particle device that creates little coloured sparks or puffs of coloured smoke. If i saw someone with a fuzzy blue holo above them I would think 'STAR WARS!' even though that particular device wasn't in the films. There's two devices that can be crafted, (a third could be a combo unit.) That would give something substantial to the ID prof.

Well I spent a week getting a ID on tabs for the mini publish. She can keep the up front credits but this is nothing I would whant on my character. I think the problem the can add more looks to the character so they doing what ever they can. It was fualty not to have diffrent hair cuts, tatoos, and things from the start. This in no way intrest me at all. But what do I know I dont sit around in tusken outfit all day on a furry cow yelling owwwwww.

I predict these will not have a long lasting appeal in the life of this game...unless this is what turns people away from playing

But seriously, I suppose we will have to see how these emotes will be considered cool or even practical enough to not be laughed at. We'll just have to see...

One question:

WHY?

I bet there are some very creative players who could use these to good effect when performing a play, rallying the troops, or roleplaying a mute character but I can see why some people might not like the idea of these holo-emotes.

Honestly the first thing that poped into my mind was that emotional shorthand used in certain anime style cartoons for young kids. You know, the little kid throws his ball, the creature does not come out, and a big giant tear appears over his head to express his sadness/embarassment.

The last thing we need is another way to compare our game to that cartoon-that-shall-not-be-named so lets hope that the use of holo emotes can find a fitting place in the game.Hopefully these are usedlike tools for futuristic performance pieces rather than just a glowing visual indicator that someone is angry, happy, or sad.

These emotes are going to suffer the same problems like the current candles do for the Architects i.e. people are only going to buy them on patch day but never again where as permanent tattoos would have given a steady but slow business.
