Ok this might turn into a rambling rant but after reading mostly every post on this a few things need to be said..*stands on his soapbox*

1) The dev started this thread with "Welcome to sneak preview of one of this week’s Friday Feature" which means it's part of the patch not THE ENTIRE PATCH..

The problem is that it's in there at all though... that it's the main focus of the patch is even worse.

2) Does anyone know the context of the emotes? Is it just going to be a /holohellokitty, for the pink kitties? If so, then I guess it's up to the character to ROLE PLAY out the 'reason' for the effect...Latest 'fashion trend' from the cantina? New "Look at me I'm an entertainer' necklace? Heck even "Loot at me dood, I'm a leet holoskull dood!" while weak in RP still 'works'

Just how many people have you seen roleplay? I've searched for a very long time on multiple servers and am yet to find another genuine roleplayer.

3) Has anyone bothered to think there was another reason for this 'un starwarsy' (wretches) display? Testing for future code effects? New Entertainer effects? More cool droid thingys? Who knows, and apparently no one has thought beyond the "OMG that's stupid, that's un starwarsy!" when in actuallity ONE person and only ONE can make that determination (We all know who THAT is)

Testing of graphics does not have to be done in a publish. This is not a valid arguement.

4) Duck (and other 'ducklings') you cannot have a mmorpg if you are putting it in the contrains of "Well it's not in the movies/books it shouldnt be in the game" heck, since when did you see a Average Joe Stormtrooper who could run circles around a rebel, dodge laser blasts, shooting (and HITTING) every shot, then kneeling to shoot, jumping up and runnin away again while shooting OVER HIS SHOULDER with 80+% hit ratio? If ANYTHING is unstarwarsy that is (Not a personal attack against Duck, just that's the only name I remember who threw that phrase around the most)

I don't suppose this is my arguement, but stormtroopers were the elite. They did this all the time, except for when heros were around.

The holo's are most like a "Oh look we've got room left to add some little things what should we do" filler Wait for release then you can whine *edit* and moan about things after you have a clue.

Here's an idea... fill it with something usefull.

Just to clarify my position (for my own satisfaction at the very least)...

I'm more than happy that another profession is getting much needed attention. I'm also excited to try out some of the changes and get some new looks from my local ID.

That being said, I much less than ecstatic about the holo-emotes. Just something new for people to abuse while waiting for a shuttle or clutter up my screen while I'm in the cantina. Hopefully we can turn them off.

I think holo emotes is a fun direction for the player base and I hope to see new facial and hair designs.

But I have to say that the artwork for the trando appearance needs a revamp along with wookies fur.

OK, I just finished reading through 6 pages of opnion, here is my two cents.

The problem with image designer has always been that it is the profession least tied in with game mechanics, everyone in the game can get by without an image designer.....True they can get by without a tailor too but at least a tailor has items that are useful as well as asthetic.

Image Designers could have control over items like Stat migration, this is a believable, intelligent use for them that ties in with game mechanics.

Now the emotes, i think that a corona effect, flashy and believable, the crafting of holo necklaces, glowing eyes, flames ect are all believeable. I don't think a single person really has a problem with the idea...its far more about the images themselves. The images, especially the cat are far too cutesy, way too removed from the target audience. SWG is all about feel.

People mentioned roleplay, there are roleplay cities...Haven on Coronet on Farstar is one.

The issue is that there is a large afk/spamming community in major cities, it is these people who may well continually use these.

This destroys peoples wilful suspension of disbelief, and yes i understand that it is the same with experience monitors and with people talking (OOC) out of character. However a picture speaks a thousantd words, I can easily ignore text but this is just going to look silly.

I ask one further question....if you were intending to put these in the game, why not ask the community what images they would want, get them to design some concept art and post it. get them to vote on favorite designs after they have been weeded down.

The reason people are upset by this is simple, its an imposed change that strikes at the heart of the feel of the game.

I would add my voice to the please include a switch off option, and while i appreciate it has been a lot of work to do this i turn off the names and professions over peoples heads and i don't think an option to turn this off is unreasonable.

But i would also ask they you seriously reconsider the designs in the game, cats and skulls are a step too far.

NO. NO NO NO NO NONONONONONONONO

I can understand adding to a class to make it more enjoyable but this is just about the MOST retarded thing i have ever seen added to an MMORPG. The quality of recent patches and publishes have been shaky of late but this has to be rock bottom. I dont know weather to cancle my account out of disapointment, or laugh for joy because it just cant get any worse. More hairstyles more face options more anything but this. I'd even accept giving immage designers the ability to paint someones face up like a clown. BUT NO ONE SHOULD HAVE BUBBLES OVER THEIR HEAD. I do not think i could ruin this game any more effectively than the devs are already doing. At this rate not even the space expansion is going to be able to save this game.

I once thought that "Removed fidget action from Cu Pa while mounted" making it into the PUBLISH patch notes was amazing... but this is easily the most insane thing I have ever seen in the realm of MMO's. It blows my mind that not only is there one person in this world who thought this would be a good idea but a whole team of them. As soon as I saw the Zabrak with bubbles above his head I think my heart almost exploded. I really don't know what else to say, every single one of those pictures from the skull down are easily the hardest pictures of swg to look at.

All the work has already gone into making these holomabobs so they are going to be in the game. That's it. End of Story. If you don't like it, piss off.

I don't really think it's fair to advocate "be a fanboi or get out" in a thread started by devs to promote discussion on the subject. I'm glad people are expressing opinions; it didn't occur to me to consider that these weren't very SW-esque til someone mentioned it in this thread. I'm aware we're getting "other ID things" (though not the things at the top of our list) but that doesn't mean I have to be impressed by or appreciate these. Moreover, it's impractical to expect IDers (and non-IDers) to be satisfied with dev time being spent on particle effects rather than things for which IDers have been begging since beta (not to mention broken core systems affecting large groups of people.) I worry that we will be handed these silly things, patted on the heads, told to be satisfied with our toys like good little girls, and not looked at again for another year.

Honey, did you read the rest of the thread and the way people are "discussing" the subject? I never said you have to be impressed, just don't come around and take five posts to talk about how something should not be in the game that has obviously had a lot of work put into it, and *will* be put into the game.

After seeing the original post, I got the idea that these were just visualizations of emotes; more like interface features than anything else. Something like the little blue "i" above certain NPCs heads. If you look at it that way, it doesn't really need much contextualization within the SW universe. In fact, I think it's a pretty clever interface design. But that's what it is. It's an interface design like chat bubbles, exclamation points over NPC's heads, etc.

That's where my problem lies: I don't see what it has to do with the Image Designer. I remember a quote from the profession forum that essentially said that, in the publish's time frame, we could get maybe 1 new hairstyle per race or these "particle effects." This is totally not what I was expecting from particle effects. I was under the impression that they'd be hair ornamentations to help further distinguish various characters. Again, as I think the holo-emotes are a clever interface device, they don't really work for me as "Image Design content." Had there been a vote, I would've voted for the 1 hairstyle.

Naturally I know this isn't the only thing coming with the mini-publish, but it definitely was touted as the "big feature." I just find it a little disappointing.

See, that I can def agree with. I think they're dumb too, and I won't be getting or giving them. I wanted bothan facial hair and junk in the trunk.

How are you able to get the newsletter? I have signed up for it multiple times and yet I still do NOT get it. Maybe I need a yahoo account to get it. I bet they are filtering it as junk at my isp.. gonna have to call them and tell them that anything from Sony online isn't junk.

let me just rebute by saying there are many people who would love to have certain additions or features or enviroments in this game that George Lucas would never approve of. Just because the community *wants* something doesnt mean it should be added.

But, if it's going into the game, it follows that it was approved by Lucas Arts, thereby George Lucas, and is therefore "Star Wars".

That won't do you any good, I used a Yahoo! mail account in my newsletter signup and I don't get the stinkin' newsletter.

I can only think that the newsletter mailing list software was developed by the same people who make illthium, er, lithium, the software that 'powers' these forums.

Many people have complained about this and the only 'dev' response I've seen has been, 'You must have put the wrong email address in.' The fact is, it just doesn't work right. Like The Donald says, "I don't like excuses."

This could have interestingimpacts on my guild hunt night. I'm our lead tank / trailblazer so it'll be nice to be able to stand out better.

No more "Which guy in composite is Leman?"

I'll take a fluffy bunny holoemote please ... fluffy bunny of doom.
