Thread: For IDs Only... Is this really what we want?
I say we wait until we see what the rest are and how they work before jumping to any conclusions. All we have are 3 screenies of one small portion of the new ID goodies, and no solid info what so ever. Everyone, ID's and non-ID's both need to settle down. Some of theposts and responses I've read tonight in this forum are among the ugliest, hurtful, and just plain silly posts I've ever seen on these forums. ![]()
Until we get a chance to try these new things, I don't think we can honestly say anything.
I agree, we can't judge until we see it. It may be really cool. I will be testing my heiney off as soon as it patches.
Having said that, I would add that this entire drama could probably have been avoided by a simple "in development" explanation earlier in the process.
I agree with you there.
I think it's pretty clear, though, what these are. They're visual emotes. They're ways of emoting in the game in a fashion that's more readily visible than the subtle facial expressions and "mood text" that the game already has. My problem isn't that they're silly looking or un-Star Warsy, but that they're an interface device. It's a lot like when they added in the "i" over certain NPCs' heads. It serves to distinguish one character from another, but on a lower level than, say, a character's face, body, hair, clothes, etc. Obviously we've not seen all of the holo-emotes yet, but they chose those particular ones to show us for a reason. They're images that float around and about our characters' heads. How exactly they work, we may not know, but we know enough to know what they are.
It's not something that I'm going to get up in arms about, but I am a little disappointed. Just seems to me like a misplaced feature that doesn't really benefit from being tied to Image Designers.
I'm looking forward to whatever else comes with the publish, though.

OK... we don't know the details yet on how the "holo-emotes" will work, and we've only seen still shots of a quarter of them. So maybe I am concerned about nothing. Even so,are the holo-emotes really the kind of thing we as Image Designers want as a big chunk of ournew content? With the publish due May 11 and nothing yet on test... well, I am very worried that this is going to be pushed live without any real feedback from us.
I was excited about the possibility of hair glitter, face glitter, small effects that would add fashion and a different look to an outfit or person. The holo-emotesjust seem, I don't know, cartoony and not in keeping with the setting of the game at all somehow to me. I certainly can't see myself using these effects much at all, and I know I amalways my own best customer when it comes to Image Design.
What do we all think as Image Designers about this so far?
Well... do we know if the "holo-emotes" are the particle effects? Because I agree with the duck in saying they dont have anything to do with image design.
Wow, you guys get to beta test some new spell effects for EQ2, lucky you!!!
Sorry, couldn't resist ![]()

These are the particle effects, and were done instead of the hair accessories (glitter, streaks, barettes, etc) that were originally planned. An example of us being disappointed when things changeI do agree we'll have to see them before making any judgements. They will all last under a minute and are intended to be used as visual emotes. They will very much be along the lines of what Sir Voor has been envisioning, fun short-lasting partyish effects, though I imagine they will be used in all sorts of ways. As for hair accessory particle effects I'm sure we'd all like to still see these. Don't assume we'll be left on the side for another 6 or 7 months
We won't let the devs get away with that again will we
We certainly won't get attention on such a large scale but there are still things being considered for us that might trickle in here and there, starting with our tents getting decorated in Publish 9

Ugh, I'm sounding like a broken record here, but: communication. This is not a good example of us being disappointed over a change. Why? Because noone ever told us they were scrapping the glitter idea, nor what it was to be replaced with. I'm sure that with as constructive as this profession has proven to be in suggestions, had we been told that the focus was shifted we could, in some way, have helped. Instead we're sprung with the change at the 11th hour, and all we can do is sit back and gawk. I'm not so upset that glitter and streaks and other such items won't be going in—I am, however, upset that we found out so late, in such a manner, and that they're being replaced by what I feel are features that do nothing but destroy immersion.
Well immersion-destroying seems to be up in the air
But then here's the incompetent roleplayer talking.
I'll pass along everyone's concerns/disappointment/etc. about communication and loss of hair accessory effects.

What she said.
When I saw the first screenshot (the one from the newsletter) I thought it was really cool—then I saw the rest of them and the full implications of people walking around with these things, even intermittently, hit me. I'd rather have had 1 new hairstyle for everyone.
The problem is that I am guessing that getting one new hairstyle for everyone is just too much work right now. The holo-effects just take some simple 2-D art. It just not reasonable to expect that any of the art intensive professions are going to have really nice new content until quite a bit into the space expansion. They have already dropped big hints that this is where the majority of their time is going.
