Thread: Poll: player-placeable tent or terminal?
- Be able to place a player-city ID salon tent
- Be able to place an ID terminal in any player owned structure
- Pros
- Limits the number of ID locations to limit the number of "empty tent" problems
- To an extent evens the field for IDs in terms of presentation
- Cons
- "Gates" IDs who are not members of player communities
- Some feel tents are ugly and unconducive to a pampering ID experience
- Pros
- Likely easier to implement
- Allows IDs to use current salons etc with minimal changes
- Cons
- Could be overused (every house is a salon, woo!)
- Doesn't provide any inherent mechanism for map registration
I was in the middle of writing this up:
As per Kwee's request I am submitting this for your approval:
We have been informed by the Dev team that they intend to release Player city placeable tents to the galaxies in a future publish. I have proposed an alternative that I believe may be of more economy of Developer resources, and more desirable to the ID community at large. That alternative being a craftable ID terminal like the ones already seen inside the public ID tents. Hypotheticly this terminal would enable the structure it is placed in ( be it house, PA hall, or pavilion ) to function as the city tents do now. Now we need your oppinions.
The issue at hand is tent vs. terminal.
The Pros to the tent
All tents would hypotetically have the same external appearance, allowing easy identification by the playerbase.
If tents were placeable civic structures, any ID could operate out of any tent.
The Cons of the tent.
All tents would hypotetically have the same external appearance, reducing the customisation options, and perhaps ( undetermined ) reducing the ID's ability to personalize the space.
If tents were placeable civic structures, ID's would be unable to deny entry to other members of the player base, for whatever reasons they may have to do so.
If tents were placeable civic structures, smaller communities may not feel them as justified against the limit to structures placeable in the player community, or simply may not qualify to have one.
The pros of the terminal
If the terminals ( for which the art has already been done ) were programmed to be dropped in player housing, it would dramaticly expand on the customization and personalization options available to the owning ID.
If the terminal were used, it would allow the structure's administrators to deny entry to any individual they chose, for whatever reason. Untill recently, this may not have been considered nessissary. However, since publish 8.1 some IDs have been having problems with abusive customers.
Use of the terminals would allow IDs who already have makeshift salons set up in thier houses to continue to opperate out of those structures. By makeshift I mean salons that do not have the functionality of the NPC city tents. I am not implying that these salons are in any way shoddy or haphazard.
As they would be placed in structures that could be set at-will to private, it could disrupt some IDs from operating out of structures that they and thier customers are not on the permission lists for. This item could also go into the minus catagory.
As the terminals would be craftable, it would require an Artisan or perhaps arucitect to construct them, and would require that they be purchased or bartered for from those professions. This also could go into the minus catagory.
The Cons of the terminal
As they would be placed in structures that could be set at-will to private, it could disrupt some IDs from operating out of structures that they and thier customers are not on the permission lists for. This item could also go into the plus catagory.
As the terminals would be craftable, it would require an Artisan or perhaps arucitect to construct them, and would require that they be purchased or bartered for from those professions. This also could go into the plus catagory.
Please raise any points I may have overlooked, and cast your vote for tent or terminal. My own vote is for Terminal.
Another point I just thought of, but I lack the ability to edit:
The terminals would function by dropping them in houses. This means that if the house was empty the interior would not be loaded and the existance of the terminal would not register for things like appearance on the planatary map. If any player entered the structure, the terminal would load with the rest of the furniture and so the planitary map could take note of it.
This could be viewed as both a pro and a con. It does not change my vote.
- Terminals will not show up on /find salon
- Terminals could be added to a vendor category (exempted from the 0-item advert removal) to allow of global advertising
- Image Designers could be given a "Change Sign" option akin to that given to Merchants to allow for salon-unique signs (incorporating the holographic squiggle that the current tents use)

I would like to have ID terminals that are placeable in player city cantinas, and give ID's the ability to place the cantina as well as dancer/musician/chef.
I wouldn't have a problem with this as long as the terms could also still be placed inside non-civic structures. I personally don't much care to work out of a potentially crowded single room facility, but I would not wish to impede those who chose to do so.
- Pros
- easy identification by the playerbase
- Cons
- Too Small
- Boring (little if any decorating ability for looks or RPing)
- Some feel tents are ugly and unconducive to a pampering ID experience
- It's a tent not a Salon
- Uses city lot spaces
- Pros
- Likely easier to implement
- Allows IDs to use current salons etc with minimal changes
- For most players it would not require more lots
- Can be placed outside of a player city
- A town can have more then one Salon
- Likely easier to implement
- Cons
- A town can have more then one Salon
- Doesn't provide any inherent mechanism for map registration (See note below)

Can I be a pill and suggest a 3rd option? A droid with an ID module so we can be mobile with our profession... As far as people finding where an ID is, I would expect that with either the tent or station we'd register like entertainers do in cantinas so the cantina shows up as active. But I'd much rather be able to do what I need to do, where ever. Doctors aren't limited to where they can buff so why should we be limited to where we can ID?

I would support a droid module for time reductions, but not for stat migrations—I still maintain that migrations are exploitable as-is and having them be available anywhere would only make it that much worse.

I would prefer a terminal.
A building for player cities isn't really useful because player cities are ghost towns. I'd rather sit in the Cantina in Theed with my tag up and run into the tent as needed than sit in an empty player city.
Ok ok... so no droid, I'd rather have a module I can put in my house. I don't have any free lots left.... well unless I can miracuously unlock Jedi without ever giving up any of my ID skills.
