Thread: Laptop Resolution (Widescreen, Anyone?)
Thanks for the response, Terao. Its good to hear other SWGers are using Sagers. It sounds like you have a very nice machine running there.
Your screen is actually different than mine. Yours is WXGA (no plus), which has a native resolution of 1280x800. WXGA+ is 1440x900.
Do you know what resolution the game is running at for you? You can check by clicking the "Options" button on the launchpad, after you loging in but before you hit "Play." A window will pop up, check the Graphics tab and resolution is the first thing listed.
I'm afraid my non-standard resolution will either casue the game to not play at all, or look crappy when played. I really don't know, though; I have no experience with laptops.
Great info, thanks. I'm a little depressed by what ComCypher has to say, since I'd hope the game would support 1440x900. Com,what happens ifyou try1280 x 720? I have hopes that this resolution will be tolerable on your screen.
This guy has a chart of how games work and widescren resolutions: http://www.tigerdave.com/wgl/. SWG is toward the bottom.
The Widescreen Gaming Forum (http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/phpBB2/index.php) is something you guys might want to check out. Maybe we can come up with some workarounds. Or maybe we can drum up enough interest to get Sony to make our resolutions work.
Have a widescreen for my Desktop, run 1280x768, looks excellent! I wish more PC games supported a widescreen format, I'm assuming that is going to start to become more comon.
*edit* SWG supports the above res, and you're laptop will as well, they designed SWG to work this way ![]()

Hey all,
I was thinking about getting a laptop to play on and was wondering what the processor speeds you running and how much ram and vid ram you have?

I don't think you need to worry much, the people who experience this problem are in the minority. Even though dozens of people have reported in the tech support forum the exact same problem that I have described, it isn't a high priority issue to the devs because most people don't experience this.
I just did a test to see if 1280x720 would work, but no luck. It's a different aspect ratio from my 1440x900 res so it doesn't make for an accurate test case anyway. Also thanks for those links, I've done searches before about the issue and never came up with anything. According to the first link you gave, the monitor has to be set to interlaced mode instead of progressive scan mode but I have no idea how to change that. It is certainly something to pursue though.

I have a 2.4 GHz processor, 768 MB of RAM and 32 MB of video RAM (GeForce Go5200 card). Although I doubt you would want to risk getting a comp like mine if you intend to play this game considering the problem I stated above.

Ibrin, from the Widescreen Gaming Forum, asked me to post this here (since he doesn't have SWG):
I don't have the game yet, so I'm not looking to join the forum. Tell ComCypher to try 1280x800, that is the native resolution for a 16:10 screen ratio (which is what is the on the laptops). The 1280x720 is 16:9 ratio, which is what is used in HDTV.
If the machine has an Nvidia chipset, he should have a lower resolution that is still 16:10. My 1440x900 screen offers 1280x800 as an option, before it hits the 4:3 ratios.
Interested to see his results.

I cross-posted my original post in the Tech Support forum (http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=Techsupport&message.id=146536), and got this response from Gnomepunter:
I remember them talking about doing stuff like this in beta. Ther eis a way to override the dropdown in the launchpad options if it doesn't support the resolution you want to use.
You will need to create a user.cfg file in the SWG directory using notepad or something. In there, put the below, leaving out hte clip here parts.
----------------clip here-----------------
[ClientGraphics]
screenWidth=1280
screenHeight=1024
[Direct3d9]
fullscreenRefreshRate=75
------------clip here----------------------
Replace the resolution numbers and refresh rate numbers with what you want. Make sure your monitor can handle whatever refresh rate you use.
Disclaimer: Do this at your own risk. A lot of people have used this method with no problems. You just have to make sure you put in the proper numbers here. If you mess up, don't come to me
