What exactly do these do? Do they lower the ammount of damage done to you or decrease the number of times you are hit?
Also, how much would be a lot for each one? I am planning a new character and this is one thing I am wondering about...

Ranged and melee defensedecrease the frequency with which you are hit. They don't mitigate damage in any way if you ARE hit by something.
The cap is at +125 for both stats. 125 is plenty high, and you'll notice quite a difference if you get it up near the cap.

Does anyone know if the ranged and melee defenses that are granted to squad leader stack on top of the 125 max? and on top of the +25 to attchements mods? In other words? Is it possible to get 175 to melee and ranged defense if you are a defense stacker who is maxed out on skill taped and is in a SL group?

BTW..... only noobs think SL's are uselss. SL is F'ing awesome. Extra Terraine Negotiation, immunity from dizzy and stun, healing of mind wounds in the field, and additional accuracy on your next attack..... need I say more?

Squad Leader defensive mods stack ON TOP of
attachments
AND supercede the cap.
In effect with a Master SL you can cap out at i think 155 instead of 125.
This doesnt mean you can have +125 defense, have an SL in your group and benefit from another 25 from attachments AND the SL bonuses.......just your 125 + the SL.
basically take whatever your defense mod is, add any attachments you have, and then cap it at 125. Then you can toss on top of that the SL bonuses. If you have 100 defense, and a 25 mod...then youll have 125 + whatever the SL gives you. But if you have 120 defense and +25 mods....youll still cap at 125 (before the SL mods) even though your with an SL. It's like, SL doesnt allow you to bring all kinds of stuff along to keep going over the cap, only the SL bonuses themselves go oevr the cap.
SL bonuses do not interfere with you using attachments......but you still cap at 125 with whatever your base rating + attachments is. SL bonuses just allow you to go past the 125 hard-cap.
i hope that wasnt too confusing i made it more complex than i should have.

Or more simply put:
Individual caps 125
SL bonuses add to individual's defense regardless of individual cap.
My TKMs in my guild love me hanging around. They are virtually untouchable by other players.

I am about 99% certain that Ranged and Melee defense tapes supercede the 125 cap. If it is true that SL Defenses do the same, then a personal cap could be 175+. (125 from stacking, + 25 in Attachments + 25 or so from SL).
I have +25 +25 to melee and ranged defenses and I am capped at 125 from my profession. I do notice a difference when I put my modded clothing on.

so say i capped my ranged/melee defense. The Squad Leader Mods would surpass the cap?
