Thread: Resource Recyclers: a Smelting Machine is born

After finding a schematic for a smelting machine of a recently deceased Canyon Corsair, I took it back to my lab to examine it. After an hour studying it I finally felt confident enough that I knew what it would take to reverse engineer and makeone of these machines. Radialing it and selecting "Learn Schematic" I was astounded at how easy it had been. "Now lets see if I can make one" I had thought to myself.

50 units of fiberplast...check
40 units of steel...check
25 units of iron...check
1 small power motor?
4 heating elements?

Not knowing where to find these I set off in search. It turns out that the Small Power Motor drops off my old friends the Canyon Corsairs and the Heating Elements drop from those nasty Binyare Pirates of Talus.

Back at my lab, I reopen my crafting tool and get back to work. Adding everything I needed, I wait assemble the machine and wait for my tool to produce it.

30 seconds later, a new toy is in my inventory! Sweet! Playing with it I notice a radial menu. I select ferrous, and drop in one unit of Kammris Iron. The Machine clinks and clanks, and a split second later, spits out one unit of Smelted Iron into my inventory.

(Process works the same for non-ferrous)

Hmm.... so you took a high quality resource and turned it into crap....... why would anyone use these things? Is it for when you have 5 very small stacks of different types of steel and you want to combine them all to give you one stack of a small amount of crappy steel? Right...

It's designed for making those sub-componants that don't get statsso that you can use up lots of little bits. If they made it give out good stats it would have an awful knock on effect to the crafting industy. Personly I can't wait to get some made - might work with my guild tonight to try & get some parts for some.

Oh & to the original poster,Great Job.

Edit: oh & so you know it wasn't me who 1 Stared you Snip. Dunno why people are 1staring me now... though.

You were expecting what? Something to make things better? Something to make a brand new type of named resource with brand new resource stats that the game has to track?

This isn't something that will revolutionize crafting, but don't piss on it, it will be useful...

- There are creature recyclers... think of the tailors and scouts that can now stack creature resources for factory runs

- Also consider the crafters like Architects who do have use for large amounts of statless resources for buildings and such... using as many "generic" resources as possible can help with crafting schematics as well as cleaning up piles of 10k or 20k resources (don't think on scales of 3 or 4 units)

- Same thing for any other profession where the math leads to buying a 100k stack of resources but using 90k (from my own experience I'd always have stacks of just under 10k units different coppers or aluminums in my shop after making molecular clamps for slicing 100k bought-90k for factory-a tiny bit for crafting schematic)

I'm VERY happy to see "Smelted Iron" on this test. I think seeing once all the recyclers are made and we know how generic things like "Lube Oil" or "Tatooine Wooly Hide" becomes people can start to really determine how uselful they will be, but I'm pretty happy with them and I'm sure most crafting houses will have these in them....

Al*va, have a public house you can drop them in? Is it usable from a house or just invetory?

Yes exactly. If you are a shipwright or architect or any profession that uses a large amount or resources, you'll often have many stacks of resources that aren't quite enough to use in a schematic but aretoo much to just throw away... This will allow you to take many many stacks of those useless resources which cannot be stacked and put into any schematic and turn them all into one kind of resource that will fit into a schematic. Sure, the stats aren't that great, but there are a few things where the stats don't matter that much, or you canjust sell the product at a reduced price as a 2nd rate product. It's better than throwing 50 stacks of steel away.

Some of my pet peeve bugs:
•Armorsmith protection layers were not converted with the CU.
•Ship Details window does not close when you click "Travel" resulting in the message "You have lost the target. Closing interface."

I'm assuming Smelted Iron fills only generic "Iron" slotsfor schematics, not anything requiring Dolovite or Kammris?

Out of curiousity, what happens if you try to run the Smelted Iron through the machine again? Do you get "Smelted Ferrous"? And would running that through get you "Smelted Metal"?

Congrats!

Correct, only fits for a generic metal...and no, "You cannot recycle a recycled material"

Is it an unlimited use machine? or does it "dry" up eventually?

Consider this...

Making your manufacturing schematics with Smelted Iron, then you will never run out of iron for that specific schematic.. All you do is take any iron run it thru the machine and plop it in the factory. Too many times I have went to the factory to run off a sub component just to find out I only have enough of one of the resources to make half of what I need.
