My unscientific observation is that you heal faster when sitting down in a camp chair. So the camps seem to still accelerate general healing for as many people as there are chairs.

Camps used to be useful for calling pets, droids and vehicles... Then Jedi came and well, camps lost all their value.
The only use for one is to heal wounds by an entertainer... But how often are you out hunting with an entertainer in the group to heal? Especially POST-CD where it's near impossible to have a viable combat template w/o a double combat mastery.
Right now camps are only nice for RP. You're out hunting and want to take a break so you make a camp. Otherwise they're useless.

The only use i've ever really found for a camp is to impress the noobs. Place a HTFB outside of Theed near the bridge or on that giant flat plain outside Mos E and they'll come to you like moths to a flame. Throw in a Kimogoli pet as a backdrop (thanks to the MCH) and they'll be drooling on your boots.
But I say this in good faith, i actually do like meeting new players and helping out. A big camp outside of town used to be my favorite place to just sit and open up the chat channels,... that is until I paired up my sorosub with that gorgeous Kashyyyk space scenery, now there's no place better to mellow out than on the observation deck.

About as long as it takes to get the requisite number of SCOUTING XP points to max out the trees.
And considering Scout xp flows like water, about 2 hours if you hunt big enough stuff.
There is no more survival/camping XP, it's all Scout except for trapping.

Camps are also used as a scapegoat for poor programming.
CSR - "Oh, something's stuck beneath the terrain? Better set a camp down to retrieve it."
CSR - "Oh, you can't /cover? Better set a camp down to make it work until we can afford the time to fix this."
