Just curious, and I can only go by what other people are saying in this thread, but WHY does this macro sample more than a traditional "sample;pause for the full action pool duration;sit;rest to regen to full; rinse;repeat"? Does regeneration at the near full pool levels happen faster? It just seems that sampling should be in equal amounts, regardless of macro type used, no?

The reason is, you've got a 30 second delay between samples either way, just waiting for it to come across, or stopping the sampling process and sitting.

BUT, when you sit your regeneration rate goes a lot faster, so instead of spending that 30 second downtime with a slower regen rate, you spend it at your increased regen rate... this means that, theoretically, you can regen your full used action/mind while waiting to sample again.

In fact, I think the 30 second delay (plus the decrease in sampling effectivenes, units received-wise) has made this macro-sampling method the ONLY effective way to sample in the game.

Great reply, makes perfect sense. One last question - why the pause of 3, then? Why not simply sample, sit, rinse repeat?

Got the answer - der I had to change the main pause to 30-31 for me, as my zabrak regen rate leaves a sliver of white when it resumes, otherwise - and after a while, that sliver will add up.

A word to the wise, If you sample, sit, stand over and over again, you will slowly start to inch backwards lol. Each sitting I think scoots you back a little. Do this a few hundred times and you can traverse a few hundred meters.

I'm glad you all appreciate my macro.

Someone above was correct though that you do slowly shift each time you sit down. So, the one downfall of my macro is that if you leave it running for a long time you will slowly move further and further away from your initial spot and possibly into a crowd of aggros which would be bad. All you really need to do to stop this is to turn around at some point and face the other way. This will move in the opposite direction back to your starting point.

I found I need the pause after the sample command because if I sample then sit or stand to quickly I don't actually take the sample. I get the "You start to sample" message then a "You sit" message before actually taking the sample. You may only need a one or two second pause but the way I wrote works perfectly for my char in giving him time to fully recover action. You may need to change the pauses slightly to work with your stats.

Ok. Here's another macro I'm thinking about trying. If anyone has any suggestions or thoughts on this let me know asI haven't tried it yet I'm just trying to figure out if it'll work.

The object is to macro sample for resources and at the same time raise wilderness survival skill. It won't be as efficient as the short macro but I'm thinking if it works to gain WS skill it would still be worthwhile.

Let's start with the macro:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

/stand; /sample; /pause 999; /sit /pause 250;

/ui action toolbarSlot01;

/ui action toolbarSlot02;

/ui action toolbarSlot03;

/ui action toolbarSlot04;

/ui action toolbarSlot05;

/ui action toolbarSlot06;

/ui action toolbarSlot00;

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The setup would be to put the macro in slot 00. In each of the other slots you would put your best type of camp. The macro should run and each time through it will try to set up a camp. If a camp is already in place you should get a message saying "You can't place a camp this close to a camp" or something and it won't use the camp. Eventually though camps disappear after a certain amount of time. Once the camp disappeared you would use the camp in slot 01 to set up a new camp. The call to slot 01 afterwards would be empty and do nothing. This would in turn use each camp as the previous camps disappeared.

Am I missing anything here or would this work?

I guess nobody in this thread is aware you can abbreviate commands in a macro. I came up with 2 afk macros. I use one or the other depending how long I will be afk.

The first runs for about 4.2 hours and is written thus:

"/sam;/pause 339;/si;/pause 165;/kn;"

The 2nd runs for about 10.67 hours and looks like this:

"/sam;/pause 617;"

You just type these in as many times as they will fit and always end with a /sam. Notice no spaces except after pause as the semi colon works to separate the commands.

Good tip, Aljgp, but be wary that should they ever make another command available in the game with the first few letters that you are using as an abbreviation, that macro will no longer work the way you intended it. For example, you used /si for /sit, if they should come up with one that says /sing, then you would begin to sing instead of sit..

UD_Delt I have just the macro for you. It's separate from the sampling macro but you can have both going at the same time. When I sample I also have a mask scent macro going. But here is the survival macro.

Line up your best camps in your toolbar slots that aren't occupied by your sampling macro... I find this macro can do about 12-14 camps.

Macro: Camp

Icon: Any

Code:

/ui actiontoolbarSlot00; /pause 3065;

/ui actiontoolbarSlot01; /pause 3065;

/ui actiontoolbarSlotXX; /pause 3065;

What it does is it calls your camp which is placed in your toolbar slot then it pauses for about 51 min. I timed the camps and they auto deconstruct after about 50-51 min... This macro with the 3065 pause actually pauses 51 min and 5 sec. You can watch and time your camp for further efficency. This way I can camp for about 12 hrs and sample at the same time...

NOTE: use the old fashioned sampling macro with the long pause so you dont "walk" out of your camps.

Cloudspinner: Awesome! I hadn't thought about just running 2 macro's at once. That makes things much easier. And knowing the approx time for camps to come down is an added bonus too. Thanks a lot

From Ralph Koster's own Website at http://www.legendmud.org/raph/index.html

The Laws of Online World Design (at http://www.legendmud.org/raph/gaming/laws.html)

In particular this law:

Macroing, botting, and automation

No matter what you do, someone is going to automate the process of playing your world.

Corollary:

Looking at what parts of your game players tend to automate is a good way to determine which parts of the game are tedious and/or not fun.

I believe this is an intended feature of the macro system. Ralph's a smart guy, with lots of experience in this industry. He knew either they had to allow for macroing of sampling (a tedious necessity of any tradeskill) via in game methods or else suffer third party programs being created to do it, and having to police for those third party programs.

Bottom line:

No matter what they do to the macro system to take this, percieved by SOME, "abuse" out of the macro system. There is always going to be found, another way of AFK macro sampling, via third party programs, clever stringing of current macro commands, or other ways. (e.g. A little "pecking chicken" ala Homer simpson had in that episode where he got fat to work at home and only had to press 1 key over and over, he used a little toy to press that button over and over, and walked away.)

This is all predicted by the law, that was thought up many moons ago
