Hmmm... OK, how's this for a compromise:

Create 3 new types of PSGs with the same armor stats as the armor sets. Make them available to both factions, to be fair. (I specify new types of PSGs due to the unstable nature of the ones currently in-game... fluctuating their prots every time you shuttle or cross a server boundary.) They cost the same as a full set of the corresponding-levelfaction armor, as far as resources to craft/faction points/whatever.

That way both Imperials and Rebels have a choice... go for the dev-created faction armor, or use the PSG with a uniform of their choice. Those that WANT to wear movie-style gear can, those that like what the SWG art team created can go for that. (And Imp officers can wear their uniforms in the field if they choose.)

D'oh! I didn't click the picture to see the full view. Now I see what you meant. I guess it does look a little like the Imperial uniform because it's the same color, but otherwise it looks like big bulky armor.

I dunno. I personally don't mind the new Rebel armor. I think it could use a little visual tweaking here and there, but all things considered... good job devs and artists!

He he! No problem mate Just remember.. "The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am" lol

I agree with this part. And good job everyone involved!

Some of my pet peeve bugs:
•Armorsmith protection layers were not converted with the CU.
•Ship Details window does not close when you click "Travel" resulting in the message "You have lost the target. Closing interface."

The Leia's robe analogy was only used to point out how - to me - the whole armor in clothes' clothing seems silly to me. The same goes for flight suits. But there's no real consistency in the 'look' of the Rebels in the films. So there's not really anything to base the armor on.

*edit* Almost forgot toreply to your EU comment... This game is part of the EU. And it has many things from the EU already incoporated. It makes sense to rely on some things from the EU.

It seems to me that even new designs shouldbe consistent with the look of the movies. Yes, there aren't any examples of rebel faction armor (although supposing that the Hoth outfitcould be woven with some internal protection isn't that terribly far-fetched). But whatever new armor is introduced should probably consistent with the visual style of the rebel uniforms, retainmost of the movie's iconic design elements, or be an extension of what we've seen before-- say existing uniforms with more plasteel plating here and there.

In my opinion, the absense of something like faction armorin the movies isn'tfree license to deviate from existing visual styles, and isn't an automatic go-ahead for an artist to design without constraint. Every effort should be made to be consistent with the style already established in the films, at least if we're really serious about Star Warsyness.

At any rate, it makes more sense to draw from the films first over any EU sources. And it certainly makes more sensethan creatingdesignsfrom scratch and then putting the "EU" label on it to justify it's Star Warsynessthrough semantics. It's one of theprinciples of designI've run across in dabbling with art. "Never make excuses for your work." If an artisticdesign brings criticism from its intended audience due tounmet expectations, and if it requires one to justify or explain why it was designed the way it was--then it hasn't met its design goal. Sound designs simply do not needaccompanying verbal explaination to diffuse criticisms aimed at it. They convey all that's neededthrough the actual design itself.

Ok. Valid points. But... there was no Rebel armor in the original trilogy and most times when confronted by armored Storm Troopers the unarmored Rebels were overwhelmed and massacred. Would you rather the game be unfairly slanted that way? Simply put, no armor exists to base this on. And basing it on their uniforms - to me - is just silly.

I think they did a fine job with the exception of there seems to be no visible eye slots in some of the helms too see out of and to me it gives them a funny look - almost like a droid. I imagine this is to compensate for species whose eyes are in different places, but couldn't there be a variant or two made?

Again, no VISIBLE armor was seen on Rebels. If you're going into battle against opponents that you KNOWwill bearmored, you're an idiot if you don't wear some form of armoryourself.. and the guard troops on Leia's ship would have donned it the second the chase started, just on the chance they might have to repel boarders. Rebels also have another reason for wearing concealed armor protection... the "stealth" factor. If you see someone walking around in full armor, that just advertises that they're expecting trouble. A Rebel would want to be more low-key than that, but at the same time be prepared if things DID go down. And again, I cannot understand how you feel that basing Rebel faction gear on what was seen on-screen is silly. If anything, it should be mandatory.

Figgured I'd throw in my two cents about rebel armor and the like. Being a rebel armorsmith and all.

The novels themselves and the movies dont really cover anything at all in the way of rebels and armor.

The RPG games however DO. Both the old WEG system and the newer D20.

Also I found back in the days when I was still playing text based RPGs online, Imperials would almost allways be found, wearing imperial armor as expected.

Rebels on the other hand would often wear... well what ever the hell was handy. There was standard issue armor but it was usually lower grade than imperial simply because rebels couldnt have the same industry the imperials did. And thus standard armor sucked. So while NPCs were perfectly happy with crappy standard issue armor. PCs were not. Especially when it came to combating other PCs.

The solution they used? Why they would often do things like buy their own damn armor. Which ment that alot of them looked rather different. Be it Corporal bob in his Corellian Powersuit, to Jim the commando in his stolen imperial stealth armor. Rebels as a whole from all my experiences in RPGs at least (which is honestly in my opinion what you need to base it on over just whats in the novels) is that rebels are scavengers really. Nab what you can and the best of it first. Not to mention the rebellion does hire mercs. (Han Solo for example easily falls under this catagory)

Besides if you truely wanted to be cannon about it. Ok. Give the Rebels little to no armor. The imperials all sorts. And then make it totally useless and gives the imperials the worst aim in the world. Cause if you want to go movie this movie that. Then imperials cant hit the broad side of a barn and their armor doestn stop a blaster bolt any better than a T-shirt and some paint.
