The key is to maintain firing the Tractor Beam until the Chunk is dragged over to your ship. If you don't aim carefully, youcan actually just drag the Chunk over and PAST your ship (whoops!), and then have to turn around and chase it down again.

According to the SWG Friday Feature (see link in first post of this thread), the Tractor Beam gives you a higher "yield" into your Cargo Hold than simply blasting the Chunks. (or maybe the yield is the same, but a better quality resource - their wording is unclear (!) ...andIhaven't tested it yet)

Here's their wording:

"By using the tractor beam, space miners will be able to get a higher yield of ore..."

Sodoes "higher yield of ore" mean MORE ore per Chunk? or does it mean BETTER QUALITY ore per Chunk?

Probably more. If I am bored and test this theory somehow... I'll let ya know.

"Higher yield of ore" means MORE ore per chunk. Quality stays the same no matter what.

Well, I finally got my Ace Skill (droid programs really DO make a difference), and have had a chance to fly my Y-8 mining ship. Easily one of the coolest ship interiors- with two levels, lots of windows, and creepy long corridors with plenty of side rooms...

...and also one of the buggiest ships.

You can read in the other threads about all the bugs/fixes etc. that this vessel is going through. By the time I type it all up again, it would be different.

Suffice it to say, though, that as soon as I CAN succesfully mine with my Y-8, I will be doing so and reporting on how well it works.

I spent the better part of two days decorating my Rebel Cruiser and Y-8, and now that the IMPORTANT stuff is outta the way (heh), I will be using my Y-wing Miner to gather what I need to build the Elite and Y-8 specific ship components. After that, it will just be a matter of waiting for the bugs to be squashed...

Happy Mining!

From experience:
1. Toggle tractor beam on with key 6 (you will probably want to mute the game, the darn sound is annoying)
2. Blast a big chunk off
3. Target nearest (; key) or use target under reticle
4. Then use autofollow (or make a macro that does both and bind it to a key)
5. Once you're withing 100m and you're following directly behind the chunk, start blasting.
6. If you waited at step 5, you'll get most of the small chunks when the asteroid blows. Use steps 3 and 4 repeatedly to get any chunks that escape.

This is much faster than shooting the small chunks. I have been using the mark I and mark II lasers on a kimogila with a pretty monstrous capacitor recharge rate, using cap overload. Knocking a big chunk off takes about 5 hits, blowing the big chunk to litle chunks takes about 10 shots with iron, a bit less with others.

I mined resources to get 2 Mark III's and a crafted large cargo hold.

The mining lasers are decent enough for self defense against the tier 1 & 2 opponents I encountered. If any mining requires tier 4 or 5 opponents, you'd better load up a real weapon or get a wingman to watch your back.

Yeah, but pub 24 makes some of this out of date.
