Thread: A Galaxy of Space Mining (Asteroids DO concern me!)

(Well, I haven't seen much of a comprehensive guide to Space Mining (in general), so I will contribute what I know so far in the hopes it will help other players, or that more well-informed players can point me to a better resource...)

You can read the Friday Feature about Space Mining to get the basics, of course.

There is a fella named Flash Harrison in Kachiro, Kashyyyk who can get you started along the path to Space Mining missions (via the Corellia Mining Corp.), and by the time you're done, you'll have two mining lasers, cargo holds, and a tractor beam. Everything the budding Space Miner needs to get at that rock! There are Walkthough threads for those missions already.

Since I started mining regularly, here's some more info that I've gathered:

Systems & their Asteroid Resources:

Tatooine: Iron (and lots of them)

Naboo/Rori: Sulfuric, Carbonaceous

Corellia/Talus: Iron, Silicaceous

Lok: Obsidian, Organometallic

Yavin4: Cyanomethic, Petrochemical

Dantooine: Methane, Acidic

Endor: Ice

Dathomir: Crystal

Kashyyyk: Organometallic, Methane

Kessel: Diamond!

Asteroids will only break off a couple of large chunks at a time. These need to be broken down into smaller chunks and then blasted or "tractored" into your hold. (tractor beam gives you better yield per asteroid chunk.)

When an Asteroid's hit points (use /examine to see this) drop too low, the Asteroid stops giving out ANY chunks at all. You can then either move on to another Asteroid, or continue blasting it until it's "hp" reaches zero. It will then completely explode and be instantly replaced by a new Asteroid (same type of course).

NOTE: PERSONALLY I'D LIKE TO SEE SOME SORT OF BONUS YEILD FROM THAT FINAL BLAST TO MAKE IT WORTH WHILE, BUT THAT'S NOT THE CASE

Craftable Mining Ship Components:

You can gather the resources to have a Shipwright craft you various Mining-specific ship components:

Mining Laser I: Mining Laser II:

50 Iron Asteroid 125Iron Asteroid

50 Organometallic Asteroid 125Organometallic Asteroid

50 Methane Asteroid 125 Methane Asteroid

50 Carbonaceous Asteroid 125 Carbonaceous Asteroid

Optional Mark I Weapon Upgrade Optional Mark II Weapon Upgrade

Mining Laser III: Tractor Beam:

250 Iron Asteroid625 Iron Asteroid

250 Crystal Asteroid 625 Crystal Asteroid

250 Methane Asteroid 625 Methane Asteroid

250 Carbonaceous Asteroid 625 Carbonaceous Asteroid

Optional Mark III Weapon Upgrade

Cargo Hold (small):

Starfighter: 100 Silicacious / 100 Cyanomethic

Y-8: 1000 Obsidian / 1000 Pertochemical

POB: 750 Silicacious / 750 Acidic

Cargo Hold (medium):

Starfighter:250 Silicacious /250 Cyanomethic

Y-8:1500 Obsidian / 1500 Pertochemical

POB:1000 Silicacious /1000 Acidic

Cargo Hold (large):

Starfighter: 500 Silicacious / 500 Cyanomethic

Y-8: 3000 Obsidian / 3000 Pertochemical

POB:1250 Silicacious / 1250 Acidic

There are also some Y-8 craftable items: (Only useable on the Y-8!)

Elite Mining Laser: Mining Grade Capacitor:

1250 Iron Asteroid1250Steel

1250Diamond Asteroid 1250Copper

1250 Methane Asteroid675Organometallic Asteroid

1250 Carbonaceous Asteroid675 Carbonaceous Asteroid

Optional MarkV Weapon Upgrade Optional Mark VCapacitor Upgrade

Mining Grade Reactor:

1250 Steel

1250 Copper

625 Sulfuric Asteroid

625 Organometallic Asteroid

Optional Mark V Reactor Upgrade

Once your Cargo Hold is full (500 for small, 1000 for large Starfighter Cargo Hold) you then have to empty it into your inventory (or sell it at a Mining Platform)before you can continue mining. Biggest problem with this is that you have to LAND to do so. I can't seem to find any way to empty the Cargo Hold while still in space.

Perhaps on a Multi-Player ship this is possible. (I have yet to complete the Corvette mission and get my Ace status... so I can't tell you about Multi-Player mining yet)

SPACE MINING TRADING PLATFORMS: Here's where you can go in each system to sell what Asteroid Resources are in your Cargo Hold. You can ONLY sell what is currently in your Cargo Hold (not from your inventory). The current Price Per Unit is posted as well - not sure if they ever fluctuate...

HAVEN'T FOUND KASHYYYK TRADE OUTPOST....YET. ANYONE?

Also, there are some apparently random drops you will get of different Asteroid Chunks that can be used in very specific crafting. Ancient, Colorful, Strange, Glowing and Misshapen Asteroids. (that's all I know of so far) They are not in a resource container (like the regularones), they actually arechunks of rock. These are HUMUNGOUS if you drop them in a house (fill an entire PA hall almost) so that is kinda cool....heh.

Hope this information helps, and if anyone knows of a much better, complete guide to Space Mining - please let me know! Thanx!

Good. Glad to hear this has been of use to some of you.

Please let me know if there is anything elseyou'd like to see added to this post concerning Space Mining, and I will try to include it.

my own little contribution, highlighted the best places to sell, alough its onyl naboo and correllia on there devs should give more price variations per station, maybe farther on the travel map they are from eachother, better eachotheres resources sell,so for instance, organomettallic is in kashyyyk, bring it to,say, lok,it should be higher than most other, closer, areas

I agree about the prices. Several of the systems have the EXACT same prices for some reason... no difference on anything.

Makes me wonder if the prices will begin to change based on Player selling of resources. (price drops in areas that get a lot and prices raise in those systems seeing little Player input perhaps.... too difficult to implement? and the point is....? )

And I would think that Tatooine system would pay TOP DOLLAR for Icy Asteroids!!!!!

But perhaps that just makes too much sense.

Before rotw was released i converesed w/ one of these stations somewhere, and i remember the prices being much higher... like 50cpu for Dimond.

Other than that... still dont understand how the tractor beam is used

The Tractor Beam is added to your ship in a Weapon slot. It uses power to fire, just like a blaster.

When you blast a large Asteroid Chunk from the Asteroid, continue blasting it until it breaks up into smaller Chunks...

...Then shoot your Tractor Beam weapon at the smaller Chunks (just like blasting them - use crosshairs). Continue "tractoring" the Chunk until it comes close enough to "pop" into your Cargo Hold.

The key is to maintain firing the Tractor Beam until the Chunk is dragged over to your ship. If you don't aim carefully, youcan actually just drag the Chunk over and PAST your ship (whoops!), and then have to turn around and chase it down again.

According to the SWG Friday Feature (see link in first post of this thread), the Tractor Beam gives you a higher "yield" into your Cargo Hold than simply blasting the Chunks. (or maybe the yield is the same, but a better quality resource - their wording is unclear (!) ...andIhaven't tested it yet)

Here's their wording:

"By using the tractor beam, space miners will be able to get a higher yield of ore..."

Sodoes "higher yield of ore" mean MORE ore per Chunk? or does it mean BETTER QUALITY ore per Chunk?

Probably more. If I am bored and test this theory somehow... I'll let ya know.
