Wait a minimum of 30 minutes before you delete the character.

I've done this and many of the items I'd transferred over to a friend to hang onto poofed.

Server has to do a save, so wait at least 30 minutes. As a rule I usually wait 60 minutes.

As far as the name thing goes, I've only used an old name after several months, but it did indeed work, and I even got the emails people had sent me after I'd deleted the character.
