I've been trying to read up on this issue as much as possible because as an AS, no point making massive factory runs of bicep/bracers and pants if no one's going to buy them.
This is my take on the "mini-suit":
In order to get full protection (each hit is dissapated by one piece of armor in your combat log) you need to wear gloves, boots, chest, helmet (trandos: bicep or bracers, pants, chest, helmet). Do not wear a skirt, like the two-toned one, because they can cause an armor hole. There may be other clothes, but that is the only one I've seen talk of recently.
Also note that your secondaries will take a huge beating if you don't wear a full suit. In 1 buff session (solo-grinding 6 quenker lairs for XP, with Marksman pistol 4 and some smuggler on my alt, ended up with 700bf and 60-130 wounds to each stat using the mini-suit.
Best reason to wear the mini-suit... probably PvP readiness and PvE xp grinding (my 4-piece quenker grinding suit is only in the 300's for encumbrance and is 80kin/69elec/60 base with mostly encumbrance slices).
I wear the 4-piece suit for NS hunting (with a group.. half crafter/half pikewoman so soloing elders is not smart).
Three things to watch for: stun baton (for the vuln in comp), LVA's for the medium AP, and the type of special they use in your combat log. I have heard alot of instances of the "armor hole" while people fight NS's with both full and mini-suits. Now I haven't expereinced this myself, but someone stated that sometimes thespecials they are using are jedi specials and that makes their weapon (not sure which specfic ones.. think PH might be one) ack like they do LS damage and thus gets right through the armor.
Out of those 3, the stun baton is the easiest to take care of. Either have a PSG ready or take stun armor with you. I've got a special PvE/NS armor that is 80kin/80blast/80elec/66 base (unsliced) with a little bit of stun (my first run was 4% but I've seen as high as 8 or 9% on some servers). All this does is move the stun vuln to the special protection and now you have AR1:AP0 of the stun baton and a reduction of damage.
For Krayts and anything else that deals ALOT of damage: I would recommend wearing as much armor as you can manage, full 9 piece if possible. Also it would be good to have a spare set on you (especially if you only choose the mini-set). With only the mini-suit, the pieces will get chewed up VERY fast. Went hunting with my guild the other day and while I wasn't shocked when we got jumped by a second ancient and a canyon that spawned on top of us... figured out later that I died because my gloves were toast and every 4th hit was getting my for 2k+.
For grenade use... full suit. For the same damage reason as the kraytsand to protect your secondaries.
That's all I can think of. If anyone has anythign to add or a correction, please let me know.

Something to keep in mind is that Nightsisters will, on occasion, whip out a stub baton which your armor offers little resist to, even if you've bought a set with the proper layers.
I've seen more then a few players complain about armor holes when in fact it was the stun damage not being blocked by their armor. Always remember to check the weapon in your mob's hand. Imperial Stormtroopers at the Weapons Facility on Naboo have a penchant for pulling out stun batons as well.

Least us not forget!
Those of us who CANNOT wear gloves or boots (Dosh, Wooks, etc...) are pretty much FUBAR with the four piece suit thing.
My Wook wears all he can tote, and the Dosh is in full comp armor minus the boots and gloves, and they get hammered pretty good sometimes...

The worst thing about fighting GDKs is their plauge attack. As only a pikeman/medic, I take plenty of damage due to low defenses but can heal a third back using stim d's (not advanced component ones either). Rancors are easy, but disease again is the nasty damage dealer there. As for the NS, I got lucky. Landed dizzy on them and knocked them down. Wash, rinse, repeated tatic. Kept them down until one of them did force knockdown from the ground. After that, it was all luck to win. Went to the village one evening and did surprising well. Used non-AoE attacks and DoT weapons to start before switching over to an LVA.
All in all, I still prefer using the 4 piece mini suit over a full suit for most combat. Although I wear most of the ubese (no bracers) for day to day use and hunts. Better to use up a 60k suit of ubese than a 120k 4 piece comp mini suit for everyday wear and tear.
I still can't get over being turned into blue krayt droppings though, LOL.

4 pc against Elders, Krayt, GDK, whatever.
I've tested it both ways and the only difference I see is the decay rate.
MHS/MD.

There is no armor hole with the 4 piece suit. If a NPC uses /leghit on you and you're not wearing pants, then you will take full damage. MOBs, however, will never attack your legs. Wear armor pants when you fight strong NPCs who carry pikes.

I am confused now... First you say there is no armor hole... then you go on and say a /leghit will hit your pants for full damage if not wearing armor... Are you says there is no armor "hole" because its working as intended?
Is there a armor hole with PvP? I know most people use headhit or body hit but what if the random pool attacks are used, don't they also hit random locations... If this is true I can tell you I am going to use random pool attacks since most if not all PvPers use 4 piece suites....
