hammer: you'll know because you'll get an additional character slot

wicked: from everything i've seen/heard/read, you keep the slot after permadeath, you just have to start him/her over

cheers

I think it was either Q or Holo butsomeone made a comment on the beta boards to the effect that eventually the process (of unlocking fs) will be figured out by the community and a faq posted on the internet but that they do not expect this to happen for a long long time.

ButI do not thinkunlocking the FS slot is going to be the hard part of being a jedi. Good luck finding trainers forthe various jedi skills

thats a good point i did see that before about the theme parks, if certain tasks are done in a certain order in the theme parks then the fs slot becomes opened. makes the most sense since the devs can change the theme parks frequently making the fs harder if needed easier if needed.

Misfituser:

I know you get a second character slot...

But how would you know you did unless you tried to create a second character on the same server every day. Like, if you arent told somehow I could see some people having unlocked the slot for weeks but didn't know it because they use auto-login or something.. Basically what Im say is would a big pop-up text box come on the screen and say hey you opened another slot blah blah blah

Right....once you open up the slot it is there for good. However if you start a character in that slot and enjoy death more than a few times, your character will be deleted and you have to start over. =) As far as unlocking the slot, I am under the impression that there are multiple ways to do this based upon the profession your character is. Becuase it is ridiculous to assume that the only players able to unlock the slot are combat players. So, since I am starting a crafter I am assuming that in order to unlock the slot it takes some in-game maneuvering and questing to unlock it. I don't think that it is based upon the skill of the player or what the player kills or does. I think that we will have to talk to many NPC's, run many quests for them, answer the right questions, and possibly be "granted" the slot.

Say you are an artisan profession. To unlock their slot is different than a brawler unlocking his slot. Obviously a brawler won't be able to craft, but they can fight and vice versa. So, I think that an artisan will have to do things pertaining to his profession. Such as quests regarding building or providing certain things. The brawler though may have to kill people or destroy things. So on and so forth for the other professions to unlock the slot. If this is going to be an uncommon experience (unlocking the slot) I wouldn't be suprised if Sony tracks when a slot is unlocked. When it gets unlocked I bet they will change how the slot is unlocked for the profession of the character that will unlock it. Then it will go on and on when someone else unlocks it.

What do you all think?

Avirda, good points. I like the idea that each profession will have different "triggers" for unlocking the FS. But I heard a really nasty rumor. It wouldnt be cost effective to have guys watching the FS people all day then have a DEV change the method you opened the FS. I read somewhere that opening the FS slot would be purely random. like a 1 in 100,000 would get the slot open to them during character creation. I think this could be wrong cause of the fact that many of us would just play the same guy for quite some time. But this would encourage to play on more than one server just to try to be a jedi.

I don't know for sure, this is a rumor so please, no flames. It's only a possible idea.

Oh man, this is going to be a real annoying topic as this game get's older. Do we really want tons of jedi running around screwing up the whole scheme of the movies and the storyline? Thats probably why it's sooo friggin hard to become one because the game will not be able to follow the already pre determined ending of the movies! I'm not saying that I wouldnt jump at the opportunity to play a jedi, but I know that it may screw things up! Maybe down the line they will open a New Republic server where jedi's could be more possible with the New Jedi Order and stuff, that would be cool (if any Dev's see this, write that down!). That's my .02 cents worth.......

Exit,

I doubt that rumor has any merit. Especially based upon what I have read from teh devs and all that. If it were purely random, then it doesn't give those that really want to play a Jedi a chance to play. And it gives those that could care less about Jedi's too much of a chance. So, that is why I think that there will be triggers within the game to unlock it. But I think on the topic of cost effectiveness that it is going to be a Dev that gets notified when someone unlocks the slot. If it is as difficult as they have said, this won't be a 8 hour a day thing. It'll happen every once in awhile and when it does, the Dev can go in and change the triggers really quick and that is that. From a programming standpoint it would be too difficult or time consuming. Hopefully this is the case as it gives those that really are seeking for it a chance to attain it.

Hey,

So I was doing some research into the attributes of a Jedi in the books and movies....Get this.

Before each young Padawan or young Jedi started to actually begin his training guess what happened? Someone gave their life for that person. So, I wonder if there is something in this series of actions that our main character must take in which he has to give his life in order to unlock the FS slot for the other character? Something to think about...

It happened with Kenobi, Jinn, Vader (gave his life for Luke at the end). So on and so forth...Something to look into maybe.

So I was doing some research.

On many occasions a young padawan or chosen Jedi was thrust into his training after something happened. That happening was when his master or someone near to him gave up their lives for the prospective Jedi. So, I wonder if that is supposed to play into the role of our main character that is trying to unlock the slot. What if that character has to give their life for someone else in some way shape or form. Maybe during a quest or something?

It happened with Kenobi, Jinn, Vader....Something to think about. =)

Argh, weird...I posted that first message but it directed me to my profile. So I posted again and it posted both of them. Sorry about that. I'd like to retract it but I can't figure out how! =)

My personal theory is also based on the mission/quest system. With random POI's and NPC's supplying missions only for short times this would make describing a specific path to force sensitivity basically impossible. The person who attains the slot would only be able to tell others that they did some large number of missions.

While I did not get to test this theory in beta, the badges system intrigues me. These badges are given for completing different missions for POI and random NPC’s. If the slot required that you had a certain number of badges ( I think Q mentioned there were more than a 100 possible) or a large set of certain badge types, then I think this would allow a character to work toward the Jedi goal without being able to describe a specific path on a spoiler web site.

So for myself, I will be on the lookout for interesting NPC stories and POI’s. Luck to all.

Hey Gene, not to sound stupid but...What does the acronym POI stand for? I have my ideas but I wasn't in beta and didn't read the beta boards much. =)
