I thinka lot of the l33t speak or any computer speak substituting numbers for letters is rooted in hacking from the late 80s early 90s when hackers would use numbers to bypass whatever. I dont really know anything about hacking or why exactly they did it, but I think that is where its origins are I believe.

Tells you how noob I am....I thought PWNED meant...pawned or something to that effect...Like a chess term or something...As in if someone killed a knight/queen/etc with a pawn they got PAWNED....I guess it still means the same though

I heard on ESPN once that "pwned" is Hawaiin for "flowhole", so you can all make of that what you want- I don't speak Hawaiin but maybe some other poster might.

I first saw pwned way back when Quakeworld was new... if that gives you any clue how old the term is. I have heard that it may have originated during the Wolf3d and doom days.

Didn't the developers of the original Warcraft misspell Owned with a 'P'? I believe that this is how pwned came to be.

Type "OWNED" really fast a couple hundred times without correction.
It came from early FPS games like Rainbow 6 I think. People just had to type it in so fast after they killed someone, that most of the time they typed pwned instead of owned.
Since p has a circle in it just like an o does, I think it sort of stuck.
Its bad to get Owned, but you never want to get PwNeD!
