The probot is very helpful. It draws aggro and you can pickNPC'soff. Higher level missions can go a little quicker especially if you have an all melee group that you have to kill. I use my probot often. The only problem is I can't find any damn good "D" droid heal packs. And of course no one will sell them in crates of greater than 5. I swear that I have looked all over the Chilastra galaxy and very rarely find a crated pack or one that is actually reasonably price. C'mon asingle "D" pack for 7 to 10k? And they aren't even made that good.IMHO this is a slap in the face of game players. The DE's get major love for their profand can't keep droids etc. on their vendors. And no it is not due to sales. I have seen the same crap for weeks on the same vendors if I can even find one that isn't empty. I am about ready just to get a schematic from a guildy and make the heal packs myself. Lord knows I have all of the resources.

I love my droids. First off, when you're starting out you can group with them as everyone said above. They can tank little things for you etc...

As a TKM/Doc/Scout there's some other good uses. First off, I have 4 probot's and 1 DZ-70 droid. All of these have storage modules. Most of them have 110% Medical rating (works like a med center). Some other nice features... my DZ-70 is a StimDroid. People in my group can request heals without me having to heal them personally. For those Scouts and Rangers out there.. grab a Harvest Droid, it can be used to harvest meat/hide/bone for you.

Combat droids are useful for the up and comers getting started that need a tank. Once you get up in the ranks droids can still be useful. The storage modules are my favorite because each droid can hold 10 items. So thats 50 items I can carry in addition to my backpack and regular inventory.

How I use my storage:

Probot w/storage and medical : One suit of composite (9 pieces) and a shield generator

Probot w/storage and medical : Full suit of Ubese (9 pieces) and a shield generator

Probot w/storage and medical : 10 crates (brandy, muon, etc...)

You see where I'm going with this. Get to know a Droid Engineer and see what type of droids suit you best. They even have droids that will go and pay maintenance on your structure for you (even if the structures are on another planet!)
