way I see it is, a branch is 4/0/0/0 and a tree would be 4 branches, or 4/4/4/4.
as to what the missions do, i have no idea. I did all the patrols (10 of them) and didnt get anything.

then i guess all mine were 'unlocked' when i got my old man visit.
but that doesn't make any sense either, unless i got a lucky bug break

A tree would be 4/0/0/0, you only need 6 trees to become a padawan.

i think the "unlock" means it shows up in My Character tab on the Skills window, meaning you can actually progress in it. I only have Prowess and Reflexes (I used my free branch for melee defense in the prowess tree)

that's what i thought, but i have all 4 'force professions' under all professions. i have a little something in all 4 of them from converting xp. i only had enough to get one novice, but i can get the rest as soon as i convert more xp. im halfway to heightened sense novice. so i need to get 6x4 boxes to make padiwan trials? that's 6 4/0/0/0 type boxes, not 6 1/1/1/1 boxes? in other words, you have to go all the way up 4 lines?
im more confused than a baby in a topless bar

4000 is a full branch.
You need 6 full branches to get the exit quest.
The Old Man visits again and gives you a mission to kill this Cyborg Jedi dude called Melichae or something, who is the guy who attacked Aurillia. He has 80% resists to everything but LS, he has a Lightsaber, loads of HAM, lots of friends and instant heal until you destroy his shield shrine things.
Ouch!

Sorry for a double post but I thought I'd seperate the two, but what happens if you train the novice box of Combat Prowess or whatever. Does it mean you can then start training the boxes above? Does it mean you've skipped a quest to unlock the trees above? I don't understand that part myself...

Here's my take on it.
Since I apparently had only 1 hidden profession to master, it gave me 5 branches to unlock. You only need 6 to progress, as others have stated before, and then I believe the Old Man visits you again (confirm?) before you go fight Mellichae.
When you first arrive, talk to Paemos.
He will give you the option to select which branch you would like to unlock (16 total: 4 trees, 4 branches), and when you accept it gives you 1,225,000 force xp for whatever branch you selected (if you selected Combat Prowess: Ranged Accuracy, it gives you FS Combat Experience).
Paemos can also convert your regular combat xp into FS combat xp, and I'm assuming crafting xp into FS crafting xp, and so on if you do not have any branches to unlock from hologrinding. But Paemos doesn't train you on these particular FS skills, Noland does that.
Noland is basically a FS trainer.
He will train you as long as you have that particular branch unlocked and have the FS xp necessary to train the skill(s).
Don't forget the Village Elder, this guy tells you which NPC you need to speak with for whatever quest you are interested in, and as everyone should know, 1 NPC per village phase. Now if you can do multiple quests for your NPC in the same phase I'd like to know that!
I have 3 skill boxes left until I leave and go fight Mellichae (anyone from Eclipse wanna help?
) then hopefully i get the lightsaber/robe/etc when I move on to the Padawan Trials.
