Hi all
I'm only a month into the game and picked a lot up from the various guides and posts on these forums. I'm very much enjoying my experience so far and hoping it long continues!
I do however have a question I'm still trying to understand and hope you experienced folk will be able to help me with:
I've heard it said numerous times that you only need to wear the Boots, Gloves, Helmet and Chestplate composite armor parts to receive full protection and not receive full damage from hits. I bought these four pieces with this belief and all appeared OK until on a Sharnaff group hunt last night (first one since buying the armor), whenI noticed every 4th or 5th hit was not being soaked up by the armor but going straight through (Inparticularly to my Action bar). Yet I've done numerous group Squill hunts over the past few days and not one hit got past the armor!! So my question is, can anyone give a definite answer on the effectiveness of just using those four bits of composite armor? Because if they do offer full protection I don't see how Sharnaff hits were getting through (I even unequiped and re-equiped it to make sure each part was on). I was struggling bigtime with FPS last night for some reason (6 fps at times!) but I don't see this as a valid reason tbh!
Since starting to write this I've read other posts which suggest that since September it seems to be necessary to wear leggings to receive the full protection, along with the other 4 parts (which would explain why my Action was going down). I've also read some interest posts by Demonssword in the following thread which do offer a decent explanation (Which maybe now should include leggings as mandatory since September):
Is anyone able to back this up or confirm any details?
Thanks for your time all, I'm just left really confused by the matter with so many conflicting opinions!! And not much has been mentioned about it since September.

You missed the small piece of the post that says for PvP you dont need leggings and arm armor. When fighting other players it seems these areas are never hit. When fighting PvE then those areas are vulnerable.

I have only been playing for about 2 months and have been told the same. However, I do notice instances in which it wasn't enought especially against tougher prey and in tougher battles. This is why I have made it a commonplace activity to wear full armor and get a Doctor Buff and both Dance Buffs and Musician Buffs. I also supplement with Brandy. This way no matter what comes my way I am ready.
Of course, like you I am grinding away my skills on planets like Dant, etc. Every little bit of protection helps.

Easily explained:
There are basically 2 types of hits:
1. aimed hits: They have names like Unarmed Head Hit, Bodyshot or similar. Clearly stating what they are hitting. Those special moves always hit either boots, gloves, helmets or chest. Those are the prime special moves in pvp and therefore you only need those few armor pieces in pvp (usually).
2. General Hits: These are things like unarmed hit and the lot. They dont state which pool they are hitting and divide the damage randomly. They are able to hit other parts of the body then those covered by the 5 armor pieces above. Animals use hits like these. Therefore full armor is strongly advised against them. If your enemy is a TKA or another prof without a strong pool hit you should take a full suit of armor even in pvp because random hits can hurt badly.
Hope that helps

Thanks for all the responses already everyone!
And thanks for reminding me about the PvP thing Leanna & Elite, I had heard before about different applications of armor protection to PvP and PvE but had forgot about that when making my post.
What I think I may do is grab some low enc. leggings and try doing hunts with the 5 pieces and see how I get on without the bracers & biceps, I may be open to attacks to these areas then, but I'd like to think the number of hits to these area's would be a minimum!
I tend not to take out doctor buffs, as they seem over powerful in a way. I had them once and I felt pretty much invincible, especially with novice medic and being able to heal myself. So all I generally do is take a Brandy or two to increase my mind for healing and keep on eye on my Health and Action bars during combat. So as you could imagine,it's quite important to me that the armor I do wear does it's job effectively!
I'll have a play around though, and see what seems to work on the whole for me.
Thanks again for your replies, and look forward to any further insight anyone can offer

If you are only hunting creatures, especially without doctor buffs. i would go for kinetic layered ubese armor. does the same job and has lower encumberance.

It depends of what you are wearing
If you wear a skirt you will sometimes get hit with an armor hole
If you wear pants you wont

read the armorsmith forums, some of you guys are plain wrong. 4 pieces DOES cover it all. You get hit to the legs, damage is absorbed by boots. You get hit in the biceps, gloves absorb damage. This is possible thanks to devs latest hotfix of armor holeand probably wont be toyed with again.
The skirt does seem to mess up damage being absorbed by boots. A good outfit for combat would be pants with +4 melee and +18 shock, undershirt with +4 melee and 17 injury treatment or shock, composite boots, composite gloves, and either a compostite chest plate or Ubese (depending on mob). I also wear a sunguard with +25 to wound / injury treatment which I switch off to a composite helmet sliced to 43%+ less encumberance. This combo plus a +3 melee defense backpack makes for one good defense.
So in conclusion, you should never need to wear anything but gloves, boots and chest plates (i only have a helmet for nightsisters, krayts, or gdk). And like others have said here, Ive been able to solo all high level mobs easily with just the 4 pieces.
