Hi. I just got SWG today, and while I struggle to download a year's worth of patches on dialup I was wondering about some do's and don'ts of character creation.

I'm wondering how I want to set up a character's points at first (and what race I should be) if I wanted to go marksman/artisan? I don't see a lot of info on what races or attributes are best suited for individual professions. In time I think I would like to be a bounty hunter, but I am not sure which race is best suited for this or why.

Also, it says in the manual that Mind is one of the more important attributes but it doesn't explain why.

I'm a Camelot veteran (refugee?), so if anyone has experience in that game maybe they can relate comparisms for character creation? Thanks in advance.

Also, what's a good server to start on? Any real differences, or is it just close your eyes and pick one?

how you set up your points depends on your race and if you plan on PvPing alot. If you do then I would suggest putting most points into your mind as you can. Mind is the most important stat in PvP because it is incurable in combat unless you are lucky enough to have a combat medic with mind stims. (but most don't carry them as they cause the medics to take wounds) At the character creation screen it will give you the bonuses for each specific race though. Maybe when you are making your toon youshould check them out and decide what is best for what you find interesting. Also at the moment the BH profession is extremely out of whack and thus is probably one of the weakest combat professions out there.

Don't make a wookie if you plan on fighting they only get one set of armor and it sucks

also if you plan on fighting don't be mon cal either

humans/zabrack can wear about anything in the game

I am a rodain and pretty happy with that.

Also just pick marksman or brawler and it will migrate your stats to that profession. Just starting out you really don't need a crazy mind pool unless you are going to become a medic, crafter type (healing surveying)

servers are really different

Bria is super populated and has a very inflated economy. The European servers arent as populated as the others.

Valcyn is heavy on PvP and RP and that is where I call home. About everyone will tell you that their galaxy is the best. Yes you can pick and choose but there are big differences. Come to valcyn and I will give you a little starter money to get you on your way.

Welcome to swg and have fun!!!

Ok, thanks for the headsup on the bounty hunter. I'm assuming it will take me some time to get to the level of bounty hunter, or am I wrong? Again I have no experience with the game yet, just trying to interpret the manual. Thanks for pve pointers too.

Let me put it like this, ina Camelot analogy: if I were going to make a sorcerer I know there is one race really suited well towards that class due to inherent racial attributes, and a second class that's well suited also. So then I would most likely make an Avalonian or Inconnu, and put most of my points in to Intelligence and Dexterity, since those are the 2 main attributes for that class. To make a marksman, what's a good race and what are the attributes I need to beef up? Same with a brawler.

Again, thanks a ton for any help.

Thanks Just, I'll take you up on that. Be warned though, I will most likely be asking 1000 questions as well.

brawler trandoshan

marksman human rodain zabrack

trandoshan gets bonus to unarmed (TKA) combat, the TKA is very popular and is an awesome profession. I think that rodains get bonus to pistol skills. You cant go wrong with humans they can be great at any profession.

the manual is crap btw throw it away

Welcome to Galaxies poppa.

One thing to keep in mind: many if not all of the advice given here may be obsolete in a few months. Thats when we're expecting a "combat balance", where every combat profession will either get fixed or nurfed. Just an example: mind will be healable after the combat balance. So my advice is to choose the race and profession that looks cool to you, and not nessesarily pick it because its the best now.

Hmm. First, thanks for all the tips. I made a Bothan marksman, cannot really navigate the city too well yet. Trying to unlearn Camelot and acclimate myself to this world. One thing I found odd, it would only let me play on the Euro servers. It said the other ones were offline. Is that normal? I really would rather play on another server.
