Here is my situation. I am one tree away from finishing my FS grind. I really just want a second character for now. I don't ever want to give up the FS trees I worked on. I heard you can't give up your FS trees once you unlock your second character. That's fine with me. I'd just much rather explore the current professions than be a Jedi. I'm not sure what the setup is now, but last I heard, when Jedi die they can actually acrue negative Jedi experience point totals. Here's my question: Can I choose NOT to advance as a Jedi once I unlock my second character? Will I still be punished with negative experience points every time I die, even though I never get any Jedi exp? Is it feasable to carry on as a normal character after you unlock your second one, or is it grind Jedi exp or stay home where it's safe and craft at that point? I don't want to be a Jedi NOW, but I'd like to have the option someday, after I explore what's out there. That won't be possible if I've racked up -99999999999 exp by the time I get there. Can anyone tell me? I have been really looking forward to having a second character. It would pretty much ruin the game for me if the only way I could have two "normal" characters on the same server is to buy two copies of the game and pay twice as much per month. A little reassurance on this would be nice. Preemptive thanks.

Unfortunately you lose Jedi XP each time you die, even if you are not interested in becoming anything more than a Padawan.

And I take it you cannot surrender your Padawan box once you get it either?

No, you need Padawan for the second slot, as I understand it. If you want to play about, it will have to be on the second slot, I'm afraid...

This is so depressing...
I wasted countless hours for nothing....
I would go somewhere more appropriate to start a rant about how I earned the right to a second character, and that their forcing of the Jedi profession upon me in order to get that second character seems a blatant contradiction to the game box that said, "Choose your own path, and define your role as your prepare to take your rightful place in the Star Wars univese."
I could petition to have that changed, though I'd feel almost guilty about making the devs waste their time on my stupid complaint when there are much more serious issues that need to be addressed.
They'd ignore me anyway. Who would want just a second character when they could have a Jedi?
Besides, I'm sure that they have rationed out why you can't have two normal characters at the same time. I'm sure it affects game mechanics or prevents abuse somehow. Though I'm bitter and petty enough right now to mention it might have something to do with the fact that they can just sit there and hope that I'll shell out another $14.99 a month for it.
I could, but I guess I won't. ... and I guess I just did it here, where it doesn't belong. (I know. Flame me now. My forum etiquette is disgraceful.)
Game over, man.
Thanks everyone for the info! Good luck with your grinds!

Who would want just a second character when they could have a Jedi?
Im only doing it for the 2nd character and have no intention of ever going Jedi. My plan is to make my force character a crafter (force crafter you could say) and just craft from the safety of the home. My 2nd guy is going to be combat oriented.
At least if the devs put a cap on the negative XP it would be acceptable. but it just keeps going down and I think thats wrong to have to dig yourself out of a hole like that.

Why don't you just use your 2nd character to do your "exploring" of the world and stuff like that?? That way you won't lose any exp.

I can understand most people think it's stupid. Why be a normal character class when you can be a kick butt Jedi?
First, I'll never be a kick-butt Jedi; I do NOT have the resources.
I have about three color crystals and one clear crystal from random mobs. Just enough to make my training saber. That's not a problem for me. I'm actually quite happy with my tiny, yet hard-earned collection. I never planned on going for Jedi, so I didn't spend lots of time collecting them. Now I am facing the fact that I can't avoid being a Jedi once I get my second character, but don't have a stash of crystals or millions of credits to buy them. I have three choices here. I can make my second character a combat profession to get the crystals. I wanted a second character to try out the crafting side of SWG without giving up the combat I loved so much. (crumples up paper with "things I want" written across the top and tosses it out the window.. it explodes outside) So much for that idea. My second choice is that I could just give up on my second character now, after spending months working on it, and go hunt up a few dozen crystals. More grinding. (Bangs head on table) Finally, I could just say heck with it and just make my Jedi with a junk lightsaber. Either way, it doens't look like any kind of fun. Jedi just isn't for me right now.
Second, I'm done with grinding exp for now.
There are lots of things to do in SWG. I don't want to grind anymore. I've spent months grinding exp to unlock my second character, and I enjoyed that. I was working toward something I really wanted. I don't want to do it now. I want to earn as many non-profession badges as I can. I want to start a business with my second character to sell spice and reverse-engineered space loot. I don't want to go back to being a pathetic combatant for months on end with just what's basically a high-powered flashlight as consolation. The Jedi grind really stinks at the beginning. (And toward the end, and probably the middle too, though I'm not sure about that.) Maybe someday I'll be ready to try it, but I'd like to explore the character classes I have now. (I'm one of the many sad master smugglers waiting for a revamp so I have a place in the galaxy somewhere.... I know, I know. I could grind three Jedi before the revamp finally comes, but I'll hold out.)
Third, I understand that it's a reward for making Jedi so you can explore the world without losing experience, but why am I being punished for giving up Jedi?
I'm not gaining anything by giving up Jedi. How is having two normal characters so unfair as opposed to someone who has a Jedi and a normal character? Or someone who has two Jedi? Is wanting to go help my friends fight through a themepark one day, and crafting stuff for them the next day a crime? I understand how the devs see it, as a reward for having a Jedi, but if I put all the effort into getting there, what's the difference if I keep it or give it up? It just doesn't justify denying us two normal characters.
Why am I telling you all this?
(Because I just found out I ENJOY RANTING TO NO ONE ON THE INTERNET!!! MWAH HA HA HA!)
Oops, no. Sorry..
This is just how I want to play the game. I don't see anything wrong with how I want to play it. That's what seems like the most fun for me, and that's what the game is all about, but I can't do that, and I the logic behind it just doesn't make sense. Maybe you don't agree. That's fine. I hope you can get your Jedi or your badge, or whatever else you are working on. Good luck getting it. That doesn't mean what you want is what everyone else wants.
I'm still hoping that everyone's wrong. I'm still gonna try. I'm gonna get my Padawan, make my second character, and then give up my Padawan box. We'll see how it turns out. (crosses fingers)

To the original poster if you dont want to be a jedi, why do you care about the negative jedi xp, if you say you will never progress through the jedi skills because you dont want to then why does it matter if you get negative jedi xp, negative jedi xp wont affect anything you do normally

And also if you are just going to use him as a force crafter (which is what I do by the way) you shouldn't have to worry about getting hunted as long as you don't do anything stupid. And as a padawan if you do get hunted it will most likely be by rookie BH's which if you have leveled up half the boxes in TK you can take out without breaking a sweat or pulling out your lightsaber.
There are only three rules you really have to follow if you want to do this. Don't equip your lightsaber, don't wear your robe, and most importantly don't walk around with your jedi tag on (this is a sure way to have the first BH that runs across you run to a terminal and get your mission if it's there).
Now if your complaint is why can't I just do all my normal stuff, and then gowalking aroundwith my lightsaber out and wearing my robe, then that's another story.
