Ok this is gonna sound real sad and hokie but...
I don't think I will cry, but ya never know. For me this ends 28 years of anticipation. I can remember the day that I first saw A New Hope in the theater. I was just a little n00bler when it debuted. Not much higher than a fence post. We had a big day planned. First we were going to the zoo. Then hotdogs in the park and finishing up by going to see this movie that everyone was talking about. The day was anything but uneventfull.
At the zoo, I wanted to see the monkeys soooooo bad, cause ya know that to a little kid, monkeys were the best (and lets face it, even now they are pretty damn cool)! So we get in and I go tearing down to the monkey exhibit. About 4 feet from the brick wall, I trip and BAM! Face first into the brick wall. I wake up about 5 minutes later to a worried mother and a laughing father. My dad tells me to buck up and slaps a frozen steak he had gotten from some place in the zoo (I stole some lions dinner I'm afraid) over my eye to stop the swelling and the now major developing shiner. My mom proceeded to lecture me on why I shouldn't run where I shouldn't run (you know how moms are). So my day at the zoo is over as they keep me pretty penned up there.
Lunch was good that I remember but I was still a little wozzy from the faceplant into the brick wall. But I was pretty miffed as they never let me go back to the monky exhibit.
So we get to the theater and I wasn't really in the mood now because I didn't get to see JoJo the Chimp sling his poo all over the place. I huff and I puff and I pout. My mom is understanding but my dad was now the mad one as he was getting upset having to stand in line for this "Greatest Movie of All Time". To him it was just another movie. We finally get our tickets and get in. We buy our Cokes and our popcorn or whatever we had. We follow the throng to the theater and find some seats. Of course me being more than likely concussed and still walking around with a steak on my face, I was all over the place. Telling people about the brick wall and the steak that, by now, my dad had ripped from the snarling jaws of a hungry lion that was about to eat a defensless sealion. And then....
The lights went down... The Fox Fan Fare started... and then came those infamous words of text...
A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away....
The theme started and something magical happened....
My dad, my mom, the people sitting next to me all sat transfixed for the next 2 hours at one of the most unusual, exciting, amazing spectacles that they had scene. People cheered. People ooooo'd and awwwwe'd.It was incredible. People Oh No'd. The whole time I sat watching with one eye (as by this time, the steak had slid from my face as my hands were gripped whiteknucked to the arms of the chair) and I could think only one thing...
This is the greatest thing I have ever seen.
I have thought that about each film since and I still think it each time I watch the movies now, over and over again. Some of my best friends and the world have come from finding out they love these movies. So you ask, am I gonna cry?
Heck ya I probably will. Ain't afraid to admit it. But at the same time, I will remember being that 7 year old kid with a swollen shut black eye who watched slackjawed way back when. I will remember when after seeing Vaders deformed head and postualizing with my buddies how he got that way (and we all came to the same conclusion, that it as lava - howabout them apples if the trailer is any indication *wink). I will remember all the action figures, models, books, games and people that this has brought into my life. And when I think of all those things, I will be thankfull that George Lucas gave me something that he has given many people. The chance to always remember what it was and is like to be a little kid just having fun in a crazy world.
