Thread: Solving the Jedi Population Explosion

Caveats:
* We cannot stop people from wanting to play Jedi. They do. They buy and play the game because they want to be a Jedi - regardless of whether or not the resulting gameplay is anything like their mental image. Those who don't want to play Jedi because of their image of the profession based on the powerful appeal of the movies, want it because its overpowered by design and they want to win easily against other players. As well its more Fantasy-like and that may appeal to some as well. So there will always be a huge Jedi population, no question.
* The reason people are upset about the Jedi population is that they are numerous as rats. You can't move for tripping over them in public places. The problem with this is it in no way fits the canon (storline) of the movies where Jedi are both rare and hunted. In the movies they wage a secret war - the game they stand around publically dueling and spamming unsuitable and offensive comments, generally acting as Un-Jedi like as possible. This irks a lot of people who like the "idea" of Jedi and want to play the game as an extension of the movies.

So the problem is mostly one of visibility. If there were tons of Jedi out there but you never saw them, you wouldn't think about how jarring their presence is as it is at the moment. I would suggest the devs might consider something along these lines for a solution:

1). Jedi becomes a starter profession. End the months of pointless grinding for FS skills, just so you can do months of endless grinding to get Jedi. Everyone can create 2 characters per server, one slot is ONLY for a Jedi - and the Jedi has NO lots. They cannot deploy a house, factory, harvesters etc. This helps protect the economy and reflects the hunted "never stationary" life of a Jedi/Sith.
2). Jedi CANNOT wear their robes or equip their lightsaber, or use their powers in the presence of non-jedi NPCs. They are assumed to have a sense of the importance of keeping their secret that extends beyond their own personal desires. This means they cannot do so in any NPC city or within 500m of any NPC in a player owned city. The exception is if they are attacked by a Bounty Hunter. If they have their robes on or their lightsaber out and move into the presence of such an NPC they are put away automatically. If they are forced to fight a BH near such an NPC, they gain visibility immediately.
3). Jedi are not permitted to use their Lightsaber in a group with non-jedi. Obviously using their powers in a group does not gain them visibility because all other members are also Jedi.
4). Add in an actual Dark Jedi path, with its own quests etc. Not just Good Jedi who choose to be Imperial and pretend to be Sith. Thus players who want to be Sith really can be Sith.
5). Remove Jedi from the GCW. They apparently dominate the conflict at the moment and make the roles of all other professions much less enjoyable. Instead, add in special Jedi vs Sith missions from obscure Jedi and Sith contacts (not terminals which seems less suited) which require the Jedi or Sith to go and hunt another human opponent of the opposite type in a BH vs Jedi like dynamic. These contacts should regularly move around but be locatable by the Jedi easily. They are matched up with an opponent of suitable CL and all such fights are solo encounters. There are also non-combat missions that can be done if you are working on Defender etc The reward is additional Jedi experience. This is the primary means of advancing as a Jedi. Simply hunting does provide experience of course, but much less than it does at the moment.

Thus with a pile of admittedly sweeping changes, we allow everyone to play a Jedi or Sith if they want to easily, elminate the grinding to advance but keep it slow, reduce the visibility of Jedi to the rest of the population, and provide the Jedi/Sith population with a unique game-within-a-game of their own. This should be much more in keeping with the canon of the stories and end a lot of the whining on all sides.

Although I love the idea, I know it will never happen. Too many jedi have worked hard (perma-death jedi, not the ones spamming in theed) to get their jedi and unlocks, and they deserve them.

Jedi just need something to do away from everyone else. No one would care how many Jedi there are if they only saw one every now and then.

My thoughts exactly mate.. maybe your idea will play a role in SWG 2, if that comes out. It's a great idea, andI definitely feel changes need to be made with visibility and the light/dark jedi paths, butI can't see the devs putting in such a radical change so far after release and with so many full templates alreadyout there.

I don't agree. Your premise is a generalization about un-jedi like behavior, and all jedi must go attitude. Personally I roleplay my jedi well. I assist others with grinding. I assist others with difficult missions. I assist FS players with their first sith visits. I assist FS players during their exit missions. I am a supportive jedi who managed to gain my skill with whatever the game allowed me to use, exploit , or otherwise manage to get a full template. I don't hang about starports waving my LS around like I am at a scout camp flashlight party. I don't show off my powers for the sake of looking cool. I participate in base busting when I know our forces are superior and usually at SF bases. I am not a starport prima donna. In fact, I avoid them as much as possible, and do not wear my robes when I travel. Nevertheless, I am well known.
When I am in a group I enhance the groups combat effectiveness by keeping the healers healed, and the tankers standing. I chase down and suppress mobs when the aggro gets out of hand. I do what is necessary to reduce a players time loss from cloning. I only use my powers when I need to defend myself, or others grouped with me. I share my resources and loot with others in my group. I am a mentor for other padawans looking to advance their templates. How many jedi do you know like that? How many would you want to be around who play like that?

And my objection was never to people like yourself, but to the flashlight waving juveniles currently swearing a blue streak in all those highly public places. As I said I have met many nice Jedi so far, but seen far too many obnoxious ones.

My suggestion is to make it easy to be a Jedi - but make it extremely hard to be a Jedi in public under any cirumstances. That way we get a lessening, if not an end, to the endless "I wanna be a Jedi how can I do it in a week?" and "Its too hard" whines, we can end the "There are too many Jedi around" whines because the only time you will ever see one is when you are playing *your* Jedi in 90% of the cases. I venture to say that most if not all of the people who whine about the high rate of Jedi visibility (myself included) would cease complaining if they *never* saw another Jedi again - or at least only rarely.

If Jedi are not out grinding - but have to do missions to advance effectively and efficiently - but can't use their powers anywhere in an NPC city or within 500m of a NPC trainer/vendor/etc (except when attacked by a BH) you are never going to see the flashing Lightsabers unless you meet them out in the wild - and they are going to avoid that because they still gain visibility.
