Actually, I think saber crafting is trial number 8, mid-way thru padawan trials.
Yep.
When you kill Mellichae, that's when you start the Padawan trials.
Half way through the trials, is a trial to craft a lightsaber.
Upon succession, you are then an Initiate.
Padawan is when you are done with the trials.

LMAO!
The guide is wrong, the trials come in a random order, the crafting a saberone might have a smaller restriction as it was #9 for me.

Craft Lightsaber Trial: Thanks to your progress thus far, you have been granted the rank of Jedi Initiate. With this honor comes the ability to craft your first lightsaber. Such is your next task... to craft yourself a lightsaber. Craft one to complete the Trial, this is the final Trial, and once complete, you are a Jedi Padawan. You will need a single force crystal to tune to complete this Trial.
Ending the Guide here for now, until I can review it and add to it at a later date.
The Guide was where I got my info for my previous post.

Just for my curiosity how would you compare an initiate or padawan to other levels of combat professions? If I was using my initiate crafted lightsaber would I be comparable to a swordsman at novice? Lower in ability? Higher in ability? I am sure I will find out on my own, but I was just curious.

I tested this pre publish 9 on TC. What I did was create a master TKM and then I spent my force skills on the melee stuff. I got an axe and was comparing it to 2hand and fencer.
The max damage of my best training saber was 143, speed of 4.5.
At that point in time, the force melee speed was not affecting sabers because the training saber was broken and acted like speed of 1. But that aside, without novice saber, my hits were doing 80-143 damage and things like gubbers and gurcats on corellia conned white to me. I was getting 13-18 force pts per kill, at this time, 60,000 force pts to novice saber. I am not sure what the chart looks like now, I heard it was lowered.
I did get incapped by gurcats often. We did not have jedi robes at this time either. There was also a lack of good BE clothes to go that route either. I could have gotten buffed, or used my powerboost, but my interest at this time was to test a very low level jedi with nothing.
In comparrison, I would say that prior to novice saber, it was just like having only novice brawler and swinging an axe. Novice brawler with a survival knife was faster.
All I can say is that I was really weak. But once you hit novice saber, it all changes. Just bear in mind that before novice saber, you have no special attacks. At least at novice brawler you have lunges that help a little to multiply the damage you deal.

Instead of making lightsaber damage to elementaldamage (fire, ice, ect.)in the CU, why not make it so that lightsaber damage is vunerable to all armor (player, npc, animals) and since this is given there is no need to state that it is vunerable on all armor.
I also do Not like the idea of considering lightsaber to be a melee weapon. Jedis should be very much authentic and should be catorgorized differently than say a regular vk.
