(trying to be but probably failing) protecter of...bria?
Poor habits are very difficult to break. If I ever received a report with spelling and grammar similar to stuff I see here, I would mandate English 101 for that employee, or termination... their choice.
Yeah dude, and enjoy that Lawsuit for discrimination... You know, the one you'll lose? hehe.
I don't think firing someone because they can't spell is against the law.
Not as long as it's not due to a diagnosed learning disability or handicap. Then the employee would be protected under ADA.

Well, if suitable Communications skills were a prerequisite for the job, I fail to see how anyone would have grounds to sue over being presented with the choice of either upgrading their skills, or losing their position. Every position I have taken with a company in the past decade has included a requirement that I be capable of expressing myself clearly and effectively in English. If I wrote a sentance in the manner I frequently see posted on the boards in a report to a boss, even via email, I would expect to be asked to explain what was happening, if I was on medication etc, because there would be NO excuse for the horrid grammar, punctuation etc.
But face it really, if you don't get decent communications skills while you are in school, you are most likely dooming yourself to a life of doing crap jobs for crappy wages, or playing catchup later on when its much less convenient. Having good communications skills doesn't necessarily mean you will do any better, but it at least opens the door. If you can't write a resume, and if you can't conduct yourself appropriately in a job interview, how do you expect to get a decent job? Sure, there are many industries where its probably not a requirement, but with the increasing adoption of technology even in industries like Cattle Ranching you will most likely find yourself on the wrong side of the digital gulf if you can't use a computer effectively, and you will *never* get a management job if you can't express yourself well, let alone adequately.
When I see someone post a sentance that is poorly worded, lacks punctuation, uses cell-phone short forms for words ("b4" for "before") etc, I can only judge them on what I see written. I don't know them, I have never even talked to them in game, so my first impression is purely based on the way they express themselves. Quite frankly, I assume most of them are idiots, and I seldom read what they have to post. They migh be the next Einstein but I will never know because they expressed themselves so poorly that I can't be bothered wasting the time to decipher whatever it was they were trying to say.
This is not all directed at the original poster. I know you can type something in a hurry and bugger up the spelling and grammar easily enough, but its endemic these days it seems, and I think its only going to hurt the people who can't spell or write in the end.
And trust me, you might get paid for your job, but when you are working you will remember your time in school fondly. I would kill to be back in university again...

k, point? i use u and you, sometimes spell their like there even tho i know how to spell it, but dont care to change it, anyways it doesnt matter on an internet forum, so i see no point
Like its been said in this thread before, habits are hard to break. It might be "just an internet forum", but try to explain why your job application says : h1re m3 d00d, 1 is t3h uber. My own grammar, spelling and so on is far from perfect, english is mythird language, but you can usually tell when a person made an effort and that makes it alot easier to look past bad punctuation, spelling and so on.
Now i hate sounding old, but i actually used to do the exact same thing myself, but then i started to notice that what started out with "its just an internet forum", "its just this and that" turned into almost a lifestyle where i didnt bother to put an effort into anything and that in itself is best avoided. Might not seem like it, but a bad habit is easier to stop when its first starting out, than after youve had it for a while, just ask anyone who has quit smoking, drinking or online games they wish they had never started simply because its alot easier on themselves that way.
When it comes down to spelling, things like "u", "r", "b4", "wt*" and other ways you spell "shorthand" has a way of becoming more and more used, and before you know it, youstart actually using the wrong versions when you need touse the rightones.
