Thread: My idea for a new way to unlock jedi... DEVS, PLEASE READ!!

I am currently doing the village quests and I do have to say. Yes there are way too many jedi's but we all knew that this would happen anyway with everyone wanting to be the almighty ubar leet jedi from launch. It IN MY OPINION is completely unfair to players that choose to play their account as what they see fit and force them to grind out millions of xp on a server shifting time table with phases. If anything please dismiss the "Phases" time shift. Some people that enjoy playing SWG just don't have the time due to real lifeaffairs to grind out xp and on top of itWAIT for the servers to change Phases to let them grind somemore. I do like the idea of this new way of unlocking but I think it would be more reasonable and fair just to stop the Phases and let the Player choose what branch they want to grind out and do a quest to allow them to open it.With out waiting 16 weeks to get to it.

This would make everyone happy without making big changes to the system and still force a long grinding trip to earn that jedi. I'm all about working for my goals to be a jedi. There are some things that need to be set for the players that don't have the time to play 9 hours a day 7 days a week.

Actually I think the time lines on the phases are actually FOR those that don't have time to play all the time. # weeks is amply time for a casual player to unlock a specific branch. The phases also tell the story of the village which is one of the few peices of content th evillage offers.

The phase changes don't affact the grind at all. It only affects the unlocking . . . you can grind all your xp in adavance before unlocking the branches. In fact, most people do . . . and then just wait to unlock their needed branches.

There are alot of time sensative issues int he game regarding quests and the like . . . Player cities are on a time table for adavancement which affects how the politician plays, there is a quest in Bestine regarding the mayoral elections that is also time based . . . patients is a virtue the jedi need . . . after all, they have a longer grind ahead of them when they gt their sabers.

What if, at each phase the quests were pulled from a pool of 5-10 very different possibilities. This would make each individuals path to jedi unique to them and make the walkthru merchants job more difficult for them.

So the initial quest pool could made up of 5 kill quests and 5 fed ex quests. At the next stage the pool is 10 different quests.

As each character progresses there path to jedi would be made up of Quest X from Pool 1, Quest Z from pool 2 and so on.

Ok, let's start with a look at the way things are now.

At first, the path to become a jedi includedgrinding professions until you found the right combination to unlock force sensitivity. Then the holocrons were added, which could let you in on a number o those professions you needed, but still required a bit of trial and error, and also required getting lucky on holocron drops.

Now we have a system which requires getting badges, then performing quests, then tons of exp grinding.

What both of these systems have in common is grinding. Lots of it. While it was made common knowledge that becomming a jedi would be difficult, it would be possible to do this as a hardcore plyer or a casual player. Hmm, ok, it would take like 5 years for a casual player, but I suppose it can be done. It is a thouroughly mechanistic system, unbiased except that you need to do TONS of grinding. Frankly, that is something I despise. Yet, almost any other method of becomming a jedi would likely flood servers with jedi, thus taking out any special attraction to it. This is the rub, as Hamlet would say.

How then to add a way for non-hardcore combat monsters, who may actually be just as enthusiastic about playing SWG as any other player (and likely more so), to join the ranks of the jedi, and create a path that is notdependant on TONS of grinding.

The method you describe in opening this post, being quest dependant, is not a bad idea, yet would likelyremain focused oncombat oriented players. How would this address the crafters, entertainers, and dabblers (having many different skills, but few masteries)?

I suppose, looking at the dificulties the developers face, there are few alternatives to the insane grinding schedule they have set up, yet it is intensly unfair to non-hardcore players. I cannot play all the time, yet have had my account for more than two years. I can bealmost certain that there are players who have joined less than 6 months ago have progressed farther that I have on the jedi quests. But is that what SWG needs? So many genuinely enthusiastic players, who give their time to help new players, who spend their time making the game fun for others, do not have a realistic chance of making jedi, while the combat monster/ganker/griefer players are more likely to make jedi, and cause others to leave from sheer disgust.

So we have a difficult problem. How to reward players who have made SWG their second home, who care about it, and bring fun to the game, without making it so easy to become a jedi that virtually anyone can do it without much effort? Unfortunatley, I don't think it can be done in a mechanistic way, meaning that it won't work without some GM/Guide/Developer assistance.

I think it would be great if a certain number of players were granted jedi status per month per server, say like 5 to 10. These could be granted because of being the best newbie helper, or having the bestcharacterbio, or for a politician to have the best city layout, or for a BH to take down the hardest bounties, or for someone who adds the best content to the game, or makes the best suggestions in the forums. Any number of good deeds could be rewarded, but I think it would be best for those who add to the game, make it better for everyone, and encourage the SWG feeling and atmosphere. It could be put out each month that certain criteria will be looked at, like for instance, character bios, or city arrangement, and watch the universe come alive =). Admittedly it would require work for some developer or DM or guide or profession advocate, but I think the effort could well be worth it. Leave the village and the trials, or even make a huge quest of it or whatever, leaving the mechanistic path so that anyone who puts in that effort will be rewarded, but I would recommend adding a way to reward players who are genuinely good players, who just enjoy the game, and don't want to grind for months on end.

Ok, Ive been hearing aurguments all around that the village hasnothing to do with SW, so I think we outta get rid of it.
Also, if there are already jedi enclaves, why must we go to a puny village to get trained!?
Here is my idea..
yes, the way to become FS with the badges'll be the same.
The Force Sensitive imperial spies have discovered the village and have ratted them out. A seige takes place led by DV and the village is no more..
After FS will get a mail telling them the village has been annialated and have to meet up with the old man. They meet the Old Man in a small hut on tattooine and this is the start to the jedi themepark, and relies on one thing.. Choice
The old man sends you on a short themepark, talking to people across the galaxy and will be doing things for them. You have a Choice on each person on which each one tells which side of the force you will be serving. if you do a good deed, you earn light side points, do somthing bad will earn you dark side points (like KOTOR) Once you finish this themepark, and get enough either light or darkside points, either a light jedi or dark jedi will come to meet you (much like the old man does) and will send you to either the light or dark enclave. Once there, it will be a long themepark. The first quest is prove yourself to the gaurds outside the gate. youd have to go destroy a enemy camp of the opposing enclave. after this, the reward is getting granted acces to the enclave. You must then talk to another jedi which will send you on a mission to show him your skills with the melee weapon you choose. If you have more skills in polearm, you get double bladed, if you have more skills in fencer, you will get one handed, etc. You must go kill a specific random ananimal and bring him evidence that youve killed it. The reward for this will be a lightsaber crafting toolkit. The next quest is to gather ingeridiants for your saber. The reward for this will be given access to more of the enclave and the ability to craft a lightsaber. the next jedi will give you a quest to show him your skills with a lightsaber, and go kill a randome creature and bring him its head. Next you must challenge an opposing enclave jedi in a duel, once you win you recive your enclave robes. Now if you have done enough deeds evil or good, you will recive the title of padawan! and gain more access. AFter this you must persuade a young student of your enclave that had ran off to join to opposing one, to come back with you. After this you recive several abilities, and a new emote that allows you to wave your hand. You also recive a padawan cloak. You now will be given the ability to choose your master ( a Player character)
Soon you might go to a jedi hanger, and must do several simple quests and will be rewarded the old jedi starfighter
Oh and there would be another quest that would be on force powers light force push and stuff
This is just my idea, tell me if ya like it or not... I hope that the Devs read this!

Good ideas but need to be expanded on. This version of quests are far too short and would allow a noob to get to jedi in a month or less. A vet could do these quests in a matter of hours

Ok, the noobs might be able to accomplish getting FS and doing the old man quest and a couple months, while the themepark'll take 6 months..

Also, once you complete a number of quests (and get a lightsaber) you will be given a master for a pet. Remember how when you started the game and got that lil green R2 to help you? well, I think a master for a pet'll be good to. See, acouple long storydriven quests after reciving a lightsaber (and the lightsaber quest) You do a quest to get your master. see, everytime you release your master, he'll give you a hard quest to complete, this could be one of investigated, helping one in trouble, hunting sombody etc, etc. afoter 6 months with the master, you unlock initiate. Getting the quests from a pet'll bea helluvalot better than going back and forth on dathomir

I think a new way to become jedi would be great. SOE has made it seem too much like work rather than having fun in a game. I thought the themeparks were somewhat fun and i think a themepark to become jedi would be great. Too bad the devs would probably never listen...

Ok, first of all: Nowhere has Lucas said that the Jedi are completely extinct during this time period. However, Vader and the Clones were supposed to have done a "clean sweep" of the known galaxy...meaning, if they found a jedi, they killed it. So, the number of visible jedi on the servers now is just insane. A method is needed to reduce the numbers of the new jedi coming in, and to stop visibility 100%.

I love your idea of a themepark. There would have to be limitations, time limitations for sure. You obviously have an idea of how long it should take (9 months by the last calc I saw (heh, like a new baby)), but you give no method to keep to that schedule. The devs can think up ways to do this (phases, blah), but I'm sure it would help to give them a hand.

The being said, I want a second character. I DON'T want a Jedi. To get the second character, I HAVE to get a Jedi (no I won't get a second account, I don't have that kind of disposable income). Proposition the second: open a non-Jedi path to unlocking a second character slot. I want a crafter and I want a combat guy. Obviously I could do a weakened version of both types with one character, but I want to be able to make the best droids and the best ships all in one character. At the same time, I want to be able to take down high-level (70+)content (alone or in groups) with a character. More unlocking options, PLEASE

PLEASE, for the love of all that is holy and monetarily gained, give me a new option. Let the Jedi freaks have their fun, but make them go underground. The Vader idea is great...but he needs to be unattackable, and to instantly kill those he hunts (after all, only Luke and/or Palpatine have the power to face Vader and win). Need a different option besides Vader spawns? How about actual Dark Trooper death squads, that IS what they are made for, hunting Jedi. ALL DTs need to be 80+ elites that can smash Jedi to bits (usually in a group of 4 or more). Obviously, this would mean making DTs non-standard troops, pulling them from guard duty in the citys and camps (what a tremendous waste of resources, this isn't the way of the Empire, at least for something that valuable).

Anyway, there's my rambling addition.

I've got to say, I actually think (as much as it will never happen) is a REALLY good idea. It does sound like ALOT of fun. You'd jsut have to make sure that the enclaves were hidden off in some remote location and only accesible (like the village) to those that were supposed to be there. The only thing that i'd worry about, is that it would n't take long enough to complete. I really like how long the village takes to finish, what with the phases and all, but at the same time, I HATE the phases! They just annoy me and seem a bit stupid. Why on earth would they be dying for help, but tell me "No thanks, you've already done 1 quest this month", hehe. Silly villagers.

Anyway, jsut my two cents, hope this or a similar idea gets some serious consideration, sounds like a great idea, wd.

Sorry for double post, couldn't find edit button. jsut wanted to say that the dark/light side points (jsut like KOTOR) would be a very welcome addition to the jedi system. It would add some much needed spice to the game, especially if you found that your chracter changed how they looked depending on your alignment (again like in KOTOR). That's the main point I wanted to make, but I'll shut up now before I get a serious flame about how this is SWG, not KOTOR

It would seem alot more fun if you were constantly working towards jedi, through say 100 quests. It would still take the same amount of time, but it would make it more interesting than waiting 3 weeks between one quest that takes maybe half an hour to finish if you're lucky. I think that the badges system should be change though, because after I started my new chracter last week, I got glowy in1 day. It's really easy when you know what to do. Then I finished my fs quest two days later, and now i'm here waiting for the next phase. The main thing I like about this idea is that it sounds like you would be very busy, all the time. Not just grinding for a week to get all the xp you need, and then doing 6 quests over 13 weeks. As someone said up there, it doesnt feel like a game anymore when you're grinding jedi. I could see many reason for it, such as discouraging people to do it. But if people want jedi, they will get it, so you may aswell make it fun SOE!!

Anyway, I'm done.

hehe . . . actually I think the nature of the 1 quest per phase is a game mechanic only. It's purpose . . . to put the casual player and the power gamer on equal footing in reagrd to the unlocking of skill branches. Silly . . yes . . . but fair IMO
