The QWERTY style standard keyboard is a direct descendant of the keyboard used for the mechanical typewriter. The design of the QWERTY keyboard is set up to deliberately slow down your typing speed so as not to jam the mechanical strikers that press the ink onto the page.
Now that we don't have mechanical strikers anymore, and the letters show up as glowing electrons on a computer screen, why are we still using the QWERTY layout?

While there are some alternate keymaps out there, DVORAK pops to mind, I'd say the reason we don't see other layouts is that everyone has become used to the QWERTY system. Other layouts might be better in theory, but you'd have to convince people who have always used the QWERTY layout to learn to type all over again.
