Thread: SWG is NOT part of the EU.

That makes me feel better knowing that the EU didn't write out the NJO since I love the series. I think it's a bold direction for the galaxy I've come to love over the decades and sincerely hope they continue after the events of The Unifying Force. There was another reference to the possibilty of there being no further books in that setting and that would be extremely dissapointing, especially with the development of characters such a Jacen and Jaina and Tahiri (she's one of my favorite characters now).

Personally, I'd like 'em to bump up the timeframe to several years after the fall of Palpatine. There's a ton of interesting storylines built into the EU that players could explore....Jedi could be included in the game and still be relatively even with other elite classes due to the fact that the Jedi are still untrained relative to the Republic Era Jedi. It would solve a ton of problems in one fell swoop. Perhaps we can get the devs on this now that the CU is almost out. After all, they've allowed bugs that have been in the game since launch to proliferate and stick around, why should they be expected to fix the bugs inherent in the new system. Just launch the CU and get to work fixing the continuity issues.

All I've got to say is who cares? It's a game people, its all a piece of fantasy, get over it. You take it too seriously like this and "by deduction" prove you have nothing more worthwile in your lives.

Did the thread creator really believe that he was going to prove more than his worth by showing us this interview? Or is he just being a pompous jerk by trying to say "I know more than you do!"

Lucas approved everything in the game, including Jedi. His approval was required before the game ever was created. The developers and SOE sent Lucas Arts and GL himself copies of what they intended to do with characters, professions, and the world at large. Originally, Jedi were not planned for the game. GL told SOE that he wouldn't approve the game without Jedi. It's Lucas' fault that the continuity has been blown to hell with this game, and I'm not talking about Jedi here either. The entire game is one big affront to the continuity. First of all, Vader is supposed to be wandering the galaxy exterminating force wielders, not sitting on his ass in the emperor's retreat. Secondly, creature handlers aren't a powerful combatant, they're stable boys. Thirdly, lightsabers are supposed to cut through blast doors and pretty much anything else except another lightsaber like butter. Fourth, the universe isn't supposed to be entirely composite armor and Jedi robes. Fifth, since when are rebel recruiters allowed to chat openly about what type of support troops you can get to help you out in the middle of an open town square not 3km from the Emperor's vacation spot? Seriously, if you were looking for continuity and strict adherence to the books and/or movies, you chose the wrong game. This game was created to give people the ability to play a role in the Star Wars universe, and in order to allow people to choose what role they want to play there must be some sacrifice in the continuity. Oh and by the way, when was the last time you saw someone take more than 1 shot to the head from a blaster or a sniper rifle and live?

The problem is that in many of the EU books there are Jedi other than Luke, Yoda, Vader, and Darth Sidious alive during this period. Mara Jade, countless force sensitives that come out of hiding in NJO when Luke reopens the Jedi Academy, and a few other names of full blown Jedi that I can't remember at the moment. The truth is, the literature approved by Lucas and his company state very clearly that Vader was in the act of wiping out the Jedi, but that some still survived. If Vader had been efficient enough to kill every Jedi in existance at this time, Luke never would have made it to puberty, and Yoda would have been a green stain on the side of an ugly rotted tree.

I don't know what you're talking about. Just because some people have an interest in holding this game up to continuity has nothing to do with us trying to say we know more then anyone else. This is a discusion forum about StarWars galaxies and so we are DISCUSSING STAR WARS GALAXIES. Seems like you're a little insecure about your lack of knowledge on the subject.

As for taking this serious, well yeah I do, I like Star Wars. I like discussing it, reading about it and playing games based on it. It doesn't mean I have "nothing more worthwile" in my life at all. I just like to take a couple hours out of my day to play this game and talk about it on this forum. You get over that.

Good post, I think you're right that this is partially George's fault to begin with. I still wonder how much he knows about the game right now. As for thesection I quoedabove, I disagree. I don't believe continuity needs to be sacrificed, it's just a matter of the Devs taking the lazy way out, and chooseing the wrong time periodin hopesog makeing the most money. Like I said before, you can't make exceptions for this game or anything else and expect continuity to stay intact. It's either StarWars timeline or it's not. If you have more then one version of history, neither one becomes credable.

I wonder if another company showed up and made a MMORPG based on Knights of The Old Republic how many people would leave this game to go play that one, simply because the opportunity to RolePlay a Jedi would be better.

The difference is that these people are all Force Sensative, not full blown Jedi. They don't have lightsabers, they don't have specific Jedi robes and they don't have titles like Jedi Knight floating above their heads. Vader may not have been able to find a teenage kid on the outer rim who happened to have a little force ability, but he'd Damn surefind some guy calling himself a Jedi Knight who uses a lightsaber to kill Stormtroopers in the middle of theed. This is what I see everyday and it doesn't just bend continuity a little, it breaks it in half.

I care. This is a MMORPG based on a time period where there isn't supposed to be Jedi!!!! It is a game. But it's a game set in a specific TIME period! I take it "too seriously like this?" Go choke on a goat. I do a ton of stuff outside of this game. I don't play this game for 14 hours a day...unless there's snow on the ground and it's 40 below zero. This game isn't my life. But I expect a little quality from people making a game based on my favorite franchise. I don't expect everything to be perfect. I expect them to allow for a few things. But major events like Jedi running through the center of Coronet or Theed with their lightsabers blazing in a time period where they are supposed to be all but extinct with zero consequences twists my panties just a bit, yeah. The Devs are lazy in the way they build this game. They see an issue where people don't have enough content, so do they invent some more content for the existing jobs? NOooooo....that would be toooooo harrrrd. They just make it easier to get Jedi but make it last so damn long that people will keep playing for months in order to unlock Jedi all the while their salivating over getting their precious little lightsaber....not having any more time to complain about the lack of content.

I never intended this as an in your face type of thread. I was informing people that this game wasn't part of the EU and providing a little proof of the reasons. You're the dink that decided to chime in with your .02 like I gave a poop. People have been debating whether or some of the events should be included in this game for some time because they break with continuity. Just because YOU don't care about continuity doesn't mean there aren't people out there that do. And just because YOU think that caring about continuity means that we don't have lives doesn't give you the right to be an ASS about it either.

BTW...somewhere up there is a question about how old this interview is. It's not too old to my understanding. It came on the CD-Rom included in the hardcover of The Unifying Force. The CD contains the E-book version of Vector Prime, the interview given, the Yuuzzhan Vong description of items and history, and pictures of a Yuuzzhan Vong combat ship, Worldship, the Falcon, and Mara Jade's ship. How old it is, I don't know.

Good points. I have been a strong supporter of EU and enjoyed reading it. Lucas has been quite busy with RotS and I also heard he is working with the team for Indiana Jones IV (Don't know if that is true, haven't seen any info on it other than it is slated for a 2006 release, and Harrison Ford is on the cast) Ok, I may be crazy, and...I'm running on two hours of sleep in the past thirty hours, gotta love college YAY!!! stupid homework :robotmad but if authors are not supposed to violate the continuity of the original films, yet they make mention of several Jedi that were still alive during the time of the movies and the books are still approved...didn't they just directly violate the continuity of the movies? Just a thought. I finally forced myself to realize that the EU was just fanfiction (hardcore fanfiction, approved fanfiction, but still fanfiction) Also we have to remember, this is SWG lol. It has violated connections to both the movies and the EU, so maybe Lucas will take a closer look at it and either have things balanced out or moved up in the time line.

Above all else...this is still JUST a GAME. While I strongly support the game (and currenlty am grinding towards Jedi...gotta beat that CU lol) I have other things to do, and as mentioned earlier it s a game set in the Star Wars Universe so that people can play it, have fun, and live/play a role in the Star Wars Universe. Anyways, thats just my two cents that don't mean much heh.But on the opposite side of my post, mention in novels, official stuff, etc, was made that after the Purge of the Jedi that people considered FORCE SENSITIVE kind of stopped appearing, like the force had just somewhat vanished or something, just another thought, that's all I can pull out of my tiny brain now. And one final thought...SOE/SWG team are making money off of this game...it's called a Corporation/Business, they work to improve the game, granted most of them enjoy doing it, they are still getting paid to do it. The longer they can keep more people playing the more they are making etc.

A couple of points, just while I am thinking of them, that I heard or read somewhere (perhaps someone can confirm or deny them for me):

1) The midichlorians were not the source of the Force, but rather present as a result of the Force, forming an organic interface with the Force

2) The Force is the unifying field under the fabric of the universe, and thus exists everywhere, whether it is known or not

3) There were Force-dead individuals in the continuity that I recall, like the critter, but they don't project they are invisible to the force

Not sure how accurate these tidbits of yummy goodness are, but take them for what they are worth.

Yeah...that sounds about right. The force-dead individuals as you call 'em have made numerous appearances in the CU. The Vong are just the most numerous and the most vicious. The Myrkyr things were used by Talon Karrde when he was still a bad guy in the way back (shortly after the formation of the New Republic if I'm not mistaken) to trick and capture the Solo kids (I think). Mara Jade was working for him and Luke and she weren't married yet. As far as the midichlorians go, I've never seen an explanation on what these thing actually are. Just from watching the Phantom Menace, I took it as they were little microbes that enable a person to attune to the Force and the more you had in ya, the stronger you could become....which irked me. I think the lack of mention they have received was a direct result of the acknowledgement by George that he should have just left the science behind the Force alone and left it mystical and all that.

This is something I've been wondering about because I usually support the theory that it's possable for a few rare Jedi to be alive during this time period, but, if George says no Jedi... then it's got to be no Jedi for everything... If they start making exceptions for this game then the whole continuity is ruined.
Jason_Solo brings up a good point, George Lucas must be very busy with the new film comming. I wonder just how much he knows about this game and what's going on with Jedi. Does he realize how often you see Jedi running around with thier sabers out and Jedi Knight titles above their heads? Or do the devs just send him a generic statement that says "Jedi are very rare in the game". I wonder if George realizes just how much of the player base is either already Jedi or activly grinding towards it.
The bigest mistake was picking a time period where Jedi shouldn't exist and then including Jedi in the game.

I cannot recall which program it was, but in something I was watching on TV there was a commentary about how Lucas had suspended all of his "usual supervision" over SW continuity and merchandise while he was completing the movie. Given that post-production ran until a few months ago, he may simply be on a vacation for awhile.

However, some dialogue I was priviledged to listen to from some members of the industry indicated that some notice has already been taken of the condition of this game, and that actions are in the offing. Whether this turns out to be true or not is beyond me at the moment, as I think I am suffering from SW:G overload, but if it is true then SOE is looking at a hellstorm when George lays the smack down.

I have to say, I hope it is true.

I'm wit' choo. Just imagine the drama unfolding as the devs have to tell all the Jedi that any further Jedi related activities will incur the wrath of the UBER destroyer super force killer bunny from which there will be no cloning and no rez. It'll be more drama than Melrose Place...without the slaps and girlfights.
