Well if you've been a melee template character for all of pre-CU then pistols will work out very nicely for you post-CU. I was in the same situation and to me, pistoleer feels as fast as melee templates were in the old system. Stacked with another ranged profession pistoleers can really pump out a lot of shots pretty quickly. As for whether or not it's the fastest profession for FS grinding, I have no idea. I'm guessing as long as you get in a well-rounded group your xp will be fast no matter what your profession.
